ok i know i said that i would be logged out but i just had to pop in and mention that I MET PATRICK NESS!!!!!!! like the actual @patricknessbooks i lost my mind he was so cool genuinely

so three things i can think about mentioning:

a)  i asked him how he felt about fans producing fanart and fanfiction, and how he felt about fans incorporating diversity in their depictions of characters- including different racecanons and such, or how he felt about charcters being shipped that he did not intend to be shipped (often in a way that ”defied” their canon ‘heterosexuality’), since in both fanart and fanfiction i have done this with his characters. he responded shortly that he “got that with todd/davy”. my friend helpfully added (while pointing at me) “oh, she likes that” and i got immediately and publicly embarrassed.

but anyhow he said that he was totally down seeing different race depictions; he also talked about how people should create stories that they want to see, and that people want to see themselves in the art (wrt sexuality as well as race) and how he wrote viola and todd without physical descriptions so that readers could see their own race in them, and he was surprised when todd and viola were were usually portrayed as white so later he started mentioning races.

i think with the commentary on "crack” shipping there was tacit acceptance on that front? its refreshing to find an author who doesnt dismiss fan’s shipping  as “deluded and silly” or something. i mean in general he’s really good with respecting children and teenagers so theres that

b) i went up to get my books signed and i had my friend show him some art ive made for cw, which he really liked- however i had two pieces that i wasnt sure if i wanted to show them, one being a chaste viola/todd kiss and one being a kind-of-less-chaste todd/davy kiss. right before i went up i asked my friend to pull up the kiss one (by which i meant the todd/viola pic) and she mistook me and pulled up the todd/davy one, AND SHE SHOWED HIM.. im screaming i didnt realize until AFTER i left and as soon as i did i tried to strangle her, i was so embarrassed, but at the same time im happy whatever he saw my fanart. he referred to it jokingly as “inappropriate” or something

c) i posted all my cw art on twitter and he retweeted it so now all 34k of his followers get to see my todd/davy shite im happy
