They were losing. Stiles didn’t want to admit it, but as he and Derek were running through the trees in the moonlight, he knew. They weren’t talking, too scared to create more sound than just the crunch of leaves under their feet, the echo of following footsteps loud in the air.
Derek was wounded, having taken at least three bullets already, forcing himself to run despite pain. There was the sound of firing behind them, Stiles didn’t turn round to look, knowing he would probably fall and ruin his attempt at a getaway. Derek could outrun Stiles easily, he knew that, but the stubborn werewolf didn’t want to leave Stiles unprotected. He clung to the bat in his left hand as he ran, making sure he didn’t lose his only weapon of defence.
Another shot was fired, close this time, meaning they were gaining on them.
“You need to go - now - they’ll leave me - alone - they only want you” Stiles said between breaths as quiet as he could, knowing Derek would be able to hear him. He willed his heart not to betray him and conceal the lie.
“Not a chance Stiles” Derek said, still focused on running, moving closer to Stiles and grabbing his empty right hand. Stiles felt the pain in his legs recede slightly, giving him a slight burst of energy. He glanced down at their entwined hands and saw the familiar black lines appear, slowly making their way up Derek’s arm.
Stiles’ brain was trying to think of places they could hide; it wasn’t like the hunters could smell Derek, so they needed to try and camouflage themselves. Not being on familiar ground was completely unhelpful as both he and Derek were struggling to find a way out of the woods. After they had broken free from the trap the hunters had set for Derek, they had made a run for it.
Stiles could see the trees beginning to separate ahead of them; he felt a swell of hope rise inside him. The swell of hope turned ice cold as a cracking sound ripped through the air. Derek was falling, taking Stiles down with him.
They collided with the ground, Stiles mostly on Derek’s chest. Panic flared in him, there was warm liquid pressing against his body. He pulled back, trying to pull Derek to his feet, failing miserably as the alphas head barely turned, gargling slightly at the rising blood in his throat.
“No no NO!” Stiles said, trying his best to pull Derek up despite him weighing more than Stiles could manage. “Derek wake up, DEREK!” Stiles shook him. He didn’t realise the footsteps behind them had stopped until he felt the barrel of a gun pressed to the back of his head.
“I’m going to offer you a deal” Stiles assumed it was the lead hunter Carlos, the only name he managed to pick up from that place.
“Why would I take a deal from you” Stiles’ nerves were at a new high, his breathing quick and uneven. He closed his eyes, trying to force his brain to rationalise the situation.
“If you want to live, you’ll take the deal” Carlos spat to the side of him, Stiles imagined the look of disdain spread across his sneering face.
“What makes you think I’m going to let you kill him if you let me live?” Stiles started to rise slightly, grip firmly on the bat that he’d managed to keep hold of despite the fall. With determination fuelling him, he turned round and opened his eyes, the gun following his movement so the barrel was now pressed against his forehead.
“You’re a brave little one aren’t you? Tell me something, why him, why a parasite of humanity?” Carlos asked with feigned interest.
“How about you tell me something huh, why all of this? Derek has done nothing to you. You and your hunters with your shameless killing of innocent people who deserve better than to be treated like wild animals. They are kind and gentle and thoughtful; people who have done more for the people around them, than those who think its okay to just slaughter them and go about their day like its nothing.” Stiles was beginning to vibrate with anger, his hand almost going numb from the tight hold of the bat. He tried to weigh his chances of survival, he could try and take out Carlos, swinging his bat at the right angle to knock him out cold. He knew if he moved, the other three hunters behind him would kill him in minutes. But it was worth a try, wasn’t it?
“Don’t get clever with me boy, do you really think of this creature as gentle? His kind have savaged and murdered countless people, people like you who feign bravery and try to act tough, when all you are is a pathetic excuse for a human being” Carlos’ grip on the gun was steady, Stiles could feel the cool pressure of it against his fast beating pulse.
Maybe his mind was playing tricks on him, but he almost felt as though Derek was moving behind him, his fingers briefly touching his foot. Stiles was ready to snap, he wasn’t going to go down without and fight and he sure as hell wasn’t going to let them kill Derek without him giving his life up first. After a few seconds of hesitation, he swung the bat.
The following moments were a blur, Stiles remembers seeing the hunters leap into action as their leader fell into a crumpled heap on the floor, the bullet from his gun hitting Stiles’ shoulder. Then there was Derek, he had leapt up at the sound of the gunshot and roared the loudest Stiles had ever heard him, pushing Stiles behind him so he was a protective barrier between the hunters and their escape. Bullets were being fired and Derek wasn’t stopping, Stiles saw two go into his leg and one into his lower abdomen; the night disguising how much blood must be pouring from him.
Stiles tried to focus, remembering everything Deaton had attempted to teach him. He willed for something to happen, anything to happen that would get them out of this situation and home. The dizziness from his loss of blood in his arm was throwing him, but only barely. He scrambled to his feet and bent down to grab hold of Carlos’ gun and aimed it at a hunter that had pulled out a knife. Stiles could see him advancing on Derek, attempting to slash at his chest. Stiles sucked in a breath and pulled the trigger.
The hunter dropped without a sound, releasing the knife in his hand. Derek caught hold of the throat of the other and broke his neck, throwing him to the ground allowing him to advance on the only hunter standing. She pulled a taser out of her back pocket, pointing it at Derek and firing. Stiles watched as he dropped down, unable to fight the bolts coursing through his body.
Stiles hadn’t reacted quick enough, his breathing was erratic, he watched frozen as Derek stopped fighting, his body only twitching from the shock. No, he was not letting Derek die after everything they’ve been through; after everything they’ve overcome, Derek has come too far to die like this.Stiles shifted into motion, getting closer to the woman for a better shot, trying to still his hand as the hunter fumbled with the gun in her other hand, giving Stiles the time to shoot first, bullet hitting her in the chest. She dropped to her knees, clutching at her bleeding body before choking and falling face first to the floor.
For a brief moment Stiles felt relief, he felt the air go still around him, no more shots being fired, no more cries of pain, there was nothing. He focused his eyes on the only body on the floor that mattered. He shoved the gun into his jeans as ran over to Derek, closing the short distance easily, trying to force him to wake up, dropping to the floor beside him.
“Derek, Derek come on” Stiles patted his cheek, trying to shock him awake; which, given the recent situation, probably wasn’t the best move. Derek’s chest was rising but only barely, Stiles leant down to listen, Derek’s gargled breaths laced with more fluid than air. The tears in Stiles’ eyes spilled over as soon as they formed, dropping onto the bloody mess in front of him.
“Derek I don’t know what to do, please, you can’t – you can’t do this” Stiles tried to stop his breath from shaking, they had done it, they’d won, Derek wasn’t allowed to die when they had won. Stiles stood up, grabbing hold of Derek’s arms and, after a few attempts, began pulling him. His arms weren’t the strongest, but he’d be damned if he was leaving him here to bleed out before his body got chance to heal.
He didn’t know how far he’d got toward their original destination before he heard the engine of a car. The approaching car faced him, headlights blinding him. Two more appeared just after, all stopping at the same time. Stiles stopped moving, he let go of Derek’s arms and turned round properly, pulling the gun out and pointing it at the cars.
“Its Stiles!” A voice shouted as the car door opened, he saw the familiar face of his best friend and dropped his gun, nearly collapsing on him when their bodies connected in a hug. Stiles let the tears fall, clinging to Scott like he was his only beam of support.
“Derek, he – ” Stiles choked out.
“Yeah, we got him, Isaac and Boyd are getting him in the car, he’s okay, I can hear his heartbeat.” Scott assured him, trying to get him to move towards the car that Derek was being hoisted into. Stiles sat in the back with Derek’s head on his lap. Gripping Derek’s hand in his, trying to remember that they were safe now, they would be okay, he felt a reassuring squeeze back, looking down at Derek immediately who still had his eyes closed. Stiles felt like a weight had been lifted off him, allowing himself to fall into the darkness of his unconscious.

Stiles woke up in a hospital bed, not quite understanding how he’d got there; the unfamiliar brightness of the room causing him to squint. He felt a twinge of pain in his shoulder before he noticed the light being blocked out above him. A figure leaning over, holding onto his hand.
“Hey, how are you?” He heard Derek ask. He opened his eyes properly and felt more relief than he thought was physically possible. He pulled Derek onto him and wrapped his arms around him, burying his face in Derek’s shoulder.
“Better now” Stiles mumbled, not wanting to let Derek out of his sight again, he ignored the pain in his arm in favour of holding onto the warmth and solid body that was Derek. Trying to savour this moment, allowing it to cloud over the image of his bleeding and broken body on the floor. After a while, Derek pulled away and dropped a kiss on Stiles’ hair.
“Don’t ever do anything that stupid again, do you understand me?” Derek warned, pressing their foreheads together. Stiles creased his eyebrows in confusion.
“What are you talking about?” Stiles moved away and forced himself into a sitting positon. Derek moved back slightly.
“The hunters, the bat, you could have been killed! What made you think you were getting out of that alive?” Stiles could see the hurt across Derek’s face, his wide eyes annoyed but sad. The thing was, he would make the same decision in a heartbeat if it meant Derek would survive.
“I didn’t, my life wasn’t what I was protecting” Stiles stated, knowing Derek could hear he was telling the truth.
“You are just –” Derek surged forward and kissed him. Stiles kissed back eagerly, forcing his emotions in the action. Derek cradled Stiles’ face with his hand and deepened the kiss, exploring Stiles’ mouth with his tongue. Their held breaths and kisses of desperation were enough for now, trying to soften the events they had managed to survive. After a few minutes he pulled back and continued to speak. “– insufferable, you know that?”
“Yeah, but you already knew that and you love me anyway” Stiles replied, looking into Derek’s eyes, smiling at the man above him.
“Yeah, I do”
