Their Importance: Different From the Others is the very first openly pro-queer film that features the first ever gay romance. The fact that they’re shown as two kind-hearted people with a deep romantic bond is also pretty historic. Despite the time period, Paul and Kurt get several unambiguous intimate,romantic moments that plenty of more recent gay characters don’t get. There’s also the brilliant scene where Paul physically fights off a blackmailer threatening Kurt. Despite all the tragic things that happen there’s a hopeful ending with Kurt vowing to live to fight for gay rights.

Issues: You probably already managed to guess that their relationship ends very tragically (with Paul killing himself after being outed). There’s plenty of outdated psychological theory and that by modern standards the whole thing is very stereotypically melodramatic. It still stands up as a historical piece.
