In American Spiritualism, too, "strangers" were white, erstwhile intimates of the white séance-going audience, while spirit controls included both "white" spirits [...] as well as a seemingly obligatory cast of "Red Indian" control spirits from the American settler colonial imaginary of the Frontier. However, if the British séance and psychic ghost stories seem haunted by the anxieties of Empire, both a distant diaspora of potentially dying British persons and the exotic alterity of the Colonies, the North American séance replaced the specific localized haunting of the Gothic house with a more generalized haunting of the "Frontier" in which the whole settled landscape of America was "unsettled" by the haunting figures of prior inhabitants, the spirits of displaced and exterminated Indians. Such "Indian" spirits were not conceptualized as cosmopolitan wanderers of the space of empire, but generalized haunters of their erstwhile home, America, bearing a sense of injury for their displacement and genocide at the hands of white settler colonialism, which explained their frequent, diagnostic, appearance at American séances.
