I know you want it to be true. I want it to be true.
Since it’s probably kinda obvious I watched episode 2, given the spam all of a sudden, a few thoughts:
1. I love Whip. This guy is...I guess I find him adorable the same sorta way I find Sucre adorable? idk, but I like him. Especially the look on his face at the very end of the episode when Michael and Ramal hug. Like...same, Whip, same. Me too.
2. (Also Sid is cute and I wanna get to know him more. And lowkey wanna know more about the Korean guy whose name I couldn’t catch. But worried cause IMDb doesn’t have them credited for a bunch of episodes and I’m like...?? Hope it’s just wrong, cause it is sometimes. Although...it seems like part of the story takes place back in the US so...idk)
3. I REALLY like the Linc and C-Note dynamic. I feel like there was actually never really that much of it in the original series (which makes sense just cause their storylines wouldn’t really have intersected that much) so it’s super nice to get to see how they interact with each other. I don’t have specific things to say other than I like, and I really look forward to seeing more of that.
4. Sheba too. She’s cool and I wanna see more of her. I like how she isn’t putting up with Linc’s shit for a while, but then she’s obviously really smart, having found the other part of the code. And especially when they go into the suburbs - it seems really easy for TV/movie writers to just fall into femme fatale sorta tropes, but, even with her being amazing and awesome, she’s really legitimately shaken by seeing that guy and...I dunno, I just like complex and real characters. Always my MO.
5. THE ROSE. AND THE PIZZA MAN. AND WHAT MICHAEL HAD TO DO JUST TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. AHHHHH. Okay, I’m calm now (sorta). For one, seeing the rose scene before the episode got this giant gasp of realization out of me during the car chase scene when I realized why the whole “I wanna order a pizza” thing happened. Also this new season has made me realize how much I really do love Michael and Sara. And this show in general, actually. (AKA thank god my roommates aren’t around to see my crying and every little reaction I have to whatever’s going on).
6. Sara and Paul. Just...wtf Paul? Like...you doctored video so it looked like Linc killed a guy? So...?
7. So...there’s another thing but Imma write a separate post about it maybe, cause it’s kinda a bigger thing I’m interested in
Well. You like the life, Tommy. I don't like the fucking life.
Lizzie says Tommy won't live another two years if he carries on like this. He's gone too far.
PEAKY BLINDERS 5x02
“I need to know there’ll be something left” <—> “In my head I still pay you for it” is such a deliciously mean exchange between Tommy and Lizzie in 5x02. I mean the whole scene, they're taking shots at each other with the coldest possible expressions on their faces and the most nonchalant deliveries, refusing to admit to being wounded by each other while slashing each other open with knives.
I think sometimes people miss that Lizzie's also trying to cut Tommy (and absolutely succeeding) when she says "I need to know there'll be something left".
Like there is practicality to what she says: This is right after Tommy tries to explain as best he can why he and Arthur are so fucked up and why they can't get out of the game. Lizzie and Linda's common grievance is their husbands not being able to let go of the violence, while their more specific grievances are different. Lizzie's involves Tommy shutting her out (all she ever wants is to be let into his head—it's her greatest grievance—one with both romantic and practical motivators). Tommy's spiraling toward oblivion and it hurts that he won't let her in, but it also means she has no way to gain a sense of control over the situation—she's just sitting there watching him waste away, or waiting for the day he finally gives up on life and kills himself. And Lizzie's tired of being trapped watching someone she loves waste away while shutting everyone out, while also knowing she's the one who will inherit all the business's and the family's problems when he's gone (and as a woman with fewer social and legal rights, so his abandonment is felt much more intensely).
In this scene though, Tommy tries in the only way he knows how to explain that he doesn't have the words to talk to her or anybody about what's wrong with him. Implicitly, he's telling her he isn't cold and distant on purpose as a way to hurt her or the kids—he genuinely just couldn't open up if he tried because he doesn't know how. There's honesty in that! This is Mr. Disassociation we're talking about here. For him, this is actually a pretty vulnerable commentary, even though it's not what Lizzie wants to hear. It's an olive branch of sorts, even though he won't give her what she really wants, which is to either actually start opening up to her or agree to a divorce.
"Should you choose to depart, Tommy, either by your hand or someone else's, the person who would take your place is me. Legally, financially... everything. I need to know there'll be something left." Is her basically hearing all that and saying, "Yeah, whatever. Fuck you, man. When you kill over and die because you won't talk to anybody, just make sure there's some money left." And Lizzie KNOWS it's going to cut him, because she KNOWS Tommy's biggest insecurity is the belief that no one could ever really love him—that even his own family sticks around deep down only because money's perpetually pouring out of him. Lizzie is one of the few people he explicitly knows that's never been true of (she's angrily thrown cash back in his face how many times at this point?) and here she is telling him all she worries about now is whether his dead body will still spill some cash out onto the floor. WOOF.
It's another way of saying, "Maybe I never really loved you after all", and Tommy clocks that immediately, and he responds with the exact same sentiment "Maybe I never really loved you after all" by saying, “In my head I still pay you for it”, driving back at Lizzie's worst insecurities like she did his. Lizzie also fears she can never really be loved, only ever seen as fleeting affection to be purchased for a price.
"Fine. We don't love each other. We are objects to one another. Our relationship has only ever been a transaction, where all I am to you is money and all you are to me is a warm body." Maybe it would actually be easier on both of them if that were the truth.
