How to essentially Arasaka Mikoshi your PC
So, for those of us who don't want to let go and/or can't let go due to having programs on our old ass PC that we love/need/whatever, we don't have to let go of the beauty of (hopefully) pre-subscription era programs, let's jump into this long-ass post, yeah?
Please note that I am absolutely not paid to make this post, and I'm not being paid to advertise any of these programs; I had to figure this shit out on my own almost entirely save for one or two recommendations from friends, and that was actual literal hell because everything these days makes you pay for a subscription, so I'm making this post so you guys do not have to do any of that stupid bullshit.
YOU WILL NEED:
At least one EMPTY 1TB (terrabyte) external and detatchable drive to clone your drive to. IF YOU WANT TO CLONE MORE THAN ONE DRIVE YOU WILL NEED MORE THAN ONE EXTERNAL DRIVE OR THE NEW CLONE WILL OVERWRITE ANYTHING ON ITS TARGET DRIVE INCLUDING THE OLD CLONE, LEAVING YOU WITH ONLY ONE CLONED DRIVE. I do not make the rules, this just how it be.
An antivirus that's actually worth a shit (ergo NOT solely Windows Defender) so that you don't cause yourself problems by accidentally cloning a virus.
A program that will allow you to clone your drive without selling your entire home to do so.
(OPTIONAL) A program that helps you keep tabs on your disk health in case your drive starts dying before your other hardware pulls a Wittgenstein on your ass, so you can order that replacement if you're able. If you clicked that link and had war flashbacks, I'm so sorry.
A fan to point in the general direction of your pc & your external drive, because sometimes these bad bois get fuckin hot while you're doin this.
Let's get down to business! (no, not to defeat the Huns, to defeat time and decay, c'mon, stick with me)
Below are 3 programs I recommend, two of which is required to preserve your PC's "brain", one of which is necessary to keep tabs on how your drive disk or card is doing, and one of which is just suggested because it's a good antivirus:
Avast doesn't really factor into this discussion, I just like it as an antivirus, and it got included for the sake of formatting so the other icons wouldn't be ridiculously huge in the post lmao. If you want a good, paranoid, and easily fiddled with antivirus, I mean... I do use them, and they work pretty good.
"CrystalDiskInfo Shizuku Edition" is a disk-status checker. I don't know if there's other editions. I have this one. I recommend this one. If there's others, cool. When you download it, obvs scan it with your antivirus (Windows Defender is NOT a suitable antivirus, fuck you to whoever says it is), and then scan again (whole pc if possible) after installing it, just in case. It SHOULD be safe, but something can always catch a ride in on your downloads.
If you open CDI, it will ask you for your admin login and password, punch it in, and it'll open up a window that looks like this:
Yes, my poor HAL's C drive is dying, that's uh... Kinda why I had to look into this shit to begin with.
Complete with the cute little customizable anime girl mascot! That's your theme! The mascot with a cute background behind her! She emotes to further indicate your disk health, which if you notice, C: isn't doing too well - well, that's because that's a 10 year old SSD. To say everyone was impressed, is... Understating it. I, personally, use "Sakura Dark Mode", so if you really like the vibes of that screenshot, there you go lol
The next on the list is DiskGenius, which is old as fucking fuck in terms of helping folks work on computers (think 30+ years), and I can remember my dad using them to make backup/restores of server PCs when he was still alive. Worry not, I've used them within the past month, they're as good now as they were 30 years ago.
Same as before, make sure you scan after download, scan after install, and then when you try to open it, you'll have to punch in your administrator password and login to open the program due to the nature of what it does and looks at. Assuming your antivirus flagged it green, it should all be fine, and this is what you're looking at when it opens:
And that's A LOT. It's overwhelming as fuck to look at, so let me just guide you there step by step.
STEP ONE: Click on your "TOOLS" tab, and find the "CLONE DISK" option (or press "D" key after opening the TOOLS tab, apparently)
STEP 2: Clone your disk properly
You're gonna see this shit, and you're probably gonna go "Oh God, what the fuck do I do now?!", which is exactly what I did. What you do, is you click the drive you wanna clone. Presumably, that'll be your C drive, but you might wanna do a D drive clone, too, if you have shit saved over there like I do.
Click the drive, it'll highlight with a red border, click "OK".
THIS WINDOW WILL POP UP:
YOU FUCKING STOP RIGHT THERE.
COME BACK HERE AND READ:
If you click "YES", then it will "Migrate" your "System" and take the CURRENT FUNCTIONING "DEFAULT OS DRIVE" DESIGNATION and put that tag on your new removable drive, regardless of what letter that drive has. Which means that when you try to boot your pc next, it will be looking for that removable drive. If it does not FIND the new drive clone that you have just made on your external drive because you thought you were just making a "for safe keeping" of your current drive to stick on your shelf and thus you unplugged it and stuck it on your shelf, it will fucking scream. A lot. And you will be fighting through boot menu upon boot menu trying to get your newly-made mentally ill pc to understand that it has a perfectly functional brain inside of it right fucking now. It took me 3 days to make HAL understand that I had not removed his brain and he was being silly. THREE. FUCKING. DAYS. OF EAR PIERCING HARDWARE BEEPS AND VIRTUAL TEMPER TANTRUMS. THAT IS A HASSLE YOU DO NOT FUCKING WANT.
If you are NOT ready to put in the new card and also do not fucking want this to happen to you, tell it "NO".
ONLY TELL IT "YES" IF YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO POP OUT YOUR OLD DRIVE, POP IN THE NEW ONE, AND GIVE YOUR PC ITS NEW LEASE ON LIFE BEFORE YOU TRY TO BOOT IT AGAIN.
EVEN IF THAT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE A NEW CLONE TO TRANSFER YOUR SYSTEM TO THE DRIVE RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO CHANGE CARDS; THIS IS OKAY AND IN FACT I RECOMMEND IT ANYWAYS.
Regardless of if you tell it "YES" or "NO", this'll pop up, which is asking you to pick your target drive to wipe and put the clone in.
Pick your target drive (the 1TB external that I suggested you get, because some of these PCs have humongous OS & Storage Drives, and Idk what you're running), and tell it to start.
Another window will pop up and ask you what method you want to use to clone it, I usually pick the one that's like "keep PC on" or whatever it says -- I don't have a screenshot for you rn because this is the point where you have to close out all of your other programs for real for real so I wouldn't be able to get one even if I did plug in my backup and update it today -- but afaik it doesn't really matter which one you pick, just that one may or may not have your rig shutting off and coming back on a lot (idk, I don't use that one).
Pick the method you feel you like best, tell it to run, and then go make yourself some coffee, tea, and/or lunch, because this is gonna take a while.
When it's done, disengage your external drive and disconnect it (you may have to shut down your pc to disengage the drive if your pc is like mine and gives you shit about USB Data drives), and go on about your day, knowing that you've got a clone of your baby's brains sitting on your shelf, just in case something happens.
If something happens to your pc and you ever need to get that clone off that external drive to use (recommended, rather than using it directly from the external drive), turn on the new pc/pc with the new drive and open the boot menu (you can find that online, it changes based on OS and manufacturer from what I've seen) to tell the device you want to start the PC with the external drive as your primary OS for this go, you literally just follow the steps above with the external clone as your target for cloning, and the new pc/new disk as the storage for the clone, tell it to transfer your system, and abracapeen, your OS has a drive to live on that's pristine.
QUESTIONS?
Please either comment them on this post or ask them in a reblog. I know this post is long as fuck, but I'd really rather keep all the info in one spot so that it's easier to find <3
