Successful Psychopaths
Still on p.32 of Psychopathy as Unified Theory of Crime:
I’ll clearly have to read chapter 5 to get more into this, but apparently he’s suggesting that noncriminal psychopaths don’t exist?
He cites Coid, Yang, Ullrich, Roberts, & Hare, 2009 and suggests they used the Psychopathy Checklist Screening Version (PCL:SV). Since this may be read by people who have no idea the significance of those things: Robert Hare invented the PCL-R (Psychopathy Checklist Revised), from which the PCL:SV is, of course, derived. This is important because the PCL-R basically requires criminal activity to meet criteria for psychopathy. Therefore, if you’re using a measure that requires criminal activity for the construct, of course you aren’t going to find any people who haven’t engaged in criminal activity. This kind of thing is why people talk about psychopathy being a tautology! I’m not certain exactly what the PCL:SV looks like in that department, but that would be the first thing I would look at.
