Okay, in Genre Writing I'm writing an essay on Robert Hare, and he came up with this checklist to detect psychopathy, and I thought:

"The time has come. Let us diagnose Lightningfur."

if she gets a score of 30 or higher, she's a psychopath.

PCL-R (Psychopathy Checklist – Revised)　いわゆるサイコパス診断。

各項目を0,1,2で答え、合計30点を上回るとサイコパス。20点未満なら非サイコパスとみなされるらしい。

私は高く（厳しく）見積もって5点。

このテストで30点にもなる人は、テストをしなくても一目瞭然だと思う（笑）から、余程周囲と溶け込む能力に長けた戦略的サイコパスにしか使い道がないと思いつつ、そんなサイコパスはテストを受けようともしなければ、真面目に答えるはずがないから、どういうシーンで活躍するテストなのかイマイチわからない（笑）。

この本によると、MAOA（モノアミン酸化酵素）の活性の低さがIQの低さと関連し、IQの低さが犯罪や暴力につながる因子となり、ADHDの人はMAOAの活性が低く、サイコパスの特徴は衝動的で計画性がないことから、サイコパスは多くの場合ADHDを併発していると考えられているらしい。

※ADHD＝サイコパスではなく、サイコパスがADHDを併発。

私の中ではサイコパスは衝動的だが目的を果たすためには忍耐強く計画的であるというイメージだったので、秩序型サイコパス、無秩序型サイコパスと分けて考えた方が良いのかも知れない。

本書では勝ち組サイコパス（危険を察知してうまく潜伏して生き延びている組）、負け組サイコパス（衝動的で危機感がないため逮捕される組）と分類されている。

ASB within PCL-R

So, DeLisi (2016) does acknowledge in this second chapter that there is a controversy surrounding the use of ASB (Antisocial Behavior) as a measure within the factors of the PCL-R (Psychopathy Checklist - Revised) and its related measures.

“...it is important to include antisocial behavioral-oriented measures in regression equations when examining the predictive validity of theoretically relevant variables. This is done universally in criminology.” p. 35

Um, no? Including prior ASB as a predictor of future ASB is going to encompass a LOT of the variance. And if the theoretically relevant variable you’re using is something that exists throughout the life course (as psychopathy does, both by his own admission and general thoughts) then the same things that caused it before are still causing it, so it’s going to encompass a lot of that variance. Further, if it’s supposed to be static throughout the life course (as psychopathy is), then it’s going to be even more hidden! Any of your fluctuation around the general static level is likely going to be stochastic or measurement error, so it’s meaningless.

And where is his evidence that this is universally done in criminology? The only citation for the whole paragraph is DeLisi & Piquero 2011, which, while interesting doesn’t seem to suggest anything to that effect. The later parts of the paragraph (to which DeLisi & Piquero 2011 is relevant) talk about factors relevant to the criminal career being important considerations (like “age of onset,” that is, age at which a person first commits a crime/delinquent act). That stuff makes sense, but including prior criminal behavior and its versatility is basically using your dependent variable as an independent variable for the same dependent variable (i.e. it’s highly tautological). And even if you have it as a separate piece alongside psychopathy, the stability of psychopathy over time would suggest that you’re going to be losing a LOT of your covariance.

Successful Psychopaths

Still on p.32 of Psychopathy as Unified Theory of Crime:

I’ll clearly have to read chapter 5 to get more into this, but apparently he’s suggesting that noncriminal psychopaths don’t exist?

He cites Coid, Yang, Ullrich, Roberts, & Hare, 2009 and suggests they used the Psychopathy Checklist Screening Version (PCL:SV). Since this may be read by people who have no idea the significance of those things: Robert Hare invented the PCL-R (Psychopathy Checklist Revised), from which the PCL:SV is, of course, derived. This is important because the PCL-R basically requires criminal activity to meet criteria for psychopathy. Therefore, if you’re using a measure that requires criminal activity for the construct, of course you aren’t going to find any people who haven’t engaged in criminal activity. This kind of thing is why people talk about psychopathy being a tautology! I’m not certain exactly what the PCL:SV looks like in that department, but that would be the first thing I would look at.
