everything about her life had been in service of the empire, for the greater glory of it, and yet here she was, wanting nothing more than to tear down everything it stood for, to rage against the orders that she had been given. collect protectorate gleb alone. no citizen evacuations were being performed despite the horrid state of the planet and the unnatural storm that sent lightning shaking through the city. vardos had been her home for as long as she could remember, and it had always been beautiful. despite much of her time devoted to training and studying anything and everything that she could get her hands on, iden had not been ignorant of the natural beauty of the planet. it was considered to be an imperial utopia for plentiful reasons beyond the loyalty to the empire.
but now, it seemed like that meant nothing. all of the secrecy from her father and moff raythe now made sense. attempts to voice her disagreement with the mission had already been made and she had nearly walked out of that room shaking with the anger that she felt. this was not how she was meant to return home.
the last time that she had been on vardos for an extended stay had been during the efforts to brand iden versio as a traitor to the empire, to coincide with their undercover mission with the dreamers. then, she had been so young and passionate about the cause that they were serving. the commander was still young, still passionate –– but the empire did not appear to be doing the thing that they were meant to do. that they promised to do. this was cruel. they had turned on their own people and refused to see the flaw in it. a line had been crossed, and she wasn’t sure that she was able to cross it too. she hadn’t had any traitorous thoughts then, but she did now.
the corvus had landed, all helmets on as inferno squad walked through the familiar courtyard. the statue of her father staring down upon them –– the hero of vardos –– sickened her. he had been named the hero, and now he was partially responsible for its destruction. lightning crackled across the sky above them as they walked, boots clamping on the ground. she could overhear conversations from citizens, begging for answers, for a chance off, only to be shut down by the stormtroopers. this wasn’t right.
“the people of vardos are loyal to the empire. why should they be left to suffer?”
