As a sort-of follow-up to my Youth With You vocab list, here’s a Produce Camp 2020 vocab list!
伴舞 bànwǔ - backup dancer, accompanying dancer
Used to refer to Gao Zhi, Luhan’s former backup dancer.
背 bèi - to recite from memory, to learn by heart
This was used a lot when the girls were trying to memorize the theme song lyrics.
比拼 bǐpīn - battle, two-sided competition
They often just use the English word battle or say PK, which is online slang, but you’ll hear this as well sometimes.
才艺 cáiyì - talent & skill
This was used to describe the individual pieces the girls prepared that they would sometimes show after the group battles.
残忍 cánrěn - cruel, ruthless
呆萌 dāiméng - endearingly silly
Used to describe Zhang Yifan when she forgot to take off her boots.
担当 dāndāng - to take upon oneself, to assume a responsibility, to bear, someone who specializes in doing smth
The top 7 dancers and top 7 singers from the first episode were called the 舞蹈担当 and 声乐担当.
对手 duìshǒu - opponent, adversary
When the top 7 were selecting their opponents from episode 2.
发光 fāguāng - to give off light, to shine, to be luminous
From the lyrics of the theme song.
发亮 fāliàng - to shine
From the lyrics of the theme song.
归队 guīduì - to return to one’s unit
This was used after an individual performed to instruct them to return to their group.
合议 héyì - to consult, to discuss
Victoria always says this when the coaches need to discuss which team won the battle.
获胜 huòshèng - to win, to be victorious
教练 jiàoliàn - instructor, trainer, coach
This is how the girls refer to the coaches.
尽力 jìnlì - to do all one can, to try one’s best
The mentors asked the coaches if the girls who didn’t pass had done their best.
考核 kǎohé - to examine, to assess, to review, evaluation, review
The 主题曲考核 refers to the theme song evaluation.
蛮腰 mányāo - thin waist
I guess the yogurt is supposed to help you improve your figure.
拍摄 pāishè - to take a picture, to shoot
Used when talking about the filming of the theme song MV.
拼团 pīn tuán - thrown/slapped/pieced-together group
The initial evaluation groups consist of girls who are not all from the same company and thus haven’t been training together previously. So they are called thrown-together groups.
清唱 qīngchàng - to sing without musical accompaniment
How Nene sang in the individual battles when they had to sing someone else’s song.
曲目 qǔmù - item of repertoire, number
I heard this used when each of the coaches got to select a girl to compete to fill the empty top 7 spot.
实力 shílì - strength
失误 shīwù - to make an error, error
小透明 xiǎo tòumíng - someone who has little presence and is often lost in the background (often someone who is talented and has high aspirations), invisible person
网红 wǎnghóng - internet celebrity
This was used to refer to Nene and Anran’s group aka the Cyber Freelancers.
万丈光芒 wànzhàng guāngmáng - shine in all its splendor, shine with boundless radiance
This is part of their little catchphrase 敢 我有万丈光芒, on the back of the trainee profile images and other promotional materials.
位置 wèizhi - position, place, seat (for a physical spot but also more abstractly when talking about rankings)
舞蹈 wǔdǎo - dance, dancing
舞台 wǔtái - stage, performance (used to refer to the physical stage but also in a more abstract way to talk about a performance)
学员 xuéyuán - student
Interestingly, they seemed to be using this term instead of 训练生 or 练习生.
遗憾 yíhàn - regret, sorrow, remorse
一致 yízhì - identical, unanimous, without difference, consistent
Used when the coaches unanimously agree that one group was better than the other.
状态 zhuàngtài - state, situation
I’ve noticed this word pop up when contestants talk about things like (1) difficulties they faced before the show and (2) the mental/emotional state they were in when they wrote a self-composed piece.
抓住 zhuāzhù - to catch, to grip, to capture, to grab sbdy’s attention
The coaches use this to talk about whether a performance grabbed their attention or not.
主题曲 zhǔtíqū - theme song
首发 shǒufā - to appear in the starting line-up
首发成团位 aka the top 7 spots.
主力 zhǔlì - main force
主力队 is the level right below the top 7.
预备 yùbèi - to prepare, to get ready main
预备队 is the next level.
板凳 bǎndèng - bench
板凳队 is the benched team, aka the lowest one.

I feel like it went very well.
Unfortunately, my camera stopped recording after about 11 minutes, which is really too bad. I had wanted to record it and post it on youtube, but I guess that can't happen. Next time I do a talk, I'll try to record it.
there's something morally suspect about telling chinese trainees to do kpop instead of cpop but all of these girls like wang ju, gao yingxi, luo yitian, liu meng, zhong feifei, chen zhuoxuan, lu xiaocao, wang mohan, etc. would do so well...the kpoppies would eat them right up
