Application: Dirk Strider
[x]
How old are you IRL? 21
What character are you applying for? Dirk Strider
Why are you interested in this character? Dirk is a character I'm very passionate about! He's very close to my heart and he's a character I've analyzed a lot, so I like to think I have a well rounded opinion of him. I unfortunately haven't had much opportunity to write him, but when I do he comes naturally and I'd love to RP him in a group setting like this.
What is your personal interpretation of this character? How would you describe their personality? Dirk has always been a skilled and hard worker, effortlessly handling school work while balancing extracurricular activities (such as studying martial arts and swordplay.)
Because of his focus on school work, as well as being quite socially inept, Dirk isn't really one for having lots of friends. It isn't that he isolates himself purposefully or doesn't want friends, he just has a hard time forming strong bonds. While he's typically just amused by the reactions to his "seriousness", it can be disheartening to be played off as stuck up and boring by people.
But the people he is close to, he is VERY close to, and often suffers from separation anxiety if he isn't around them often. This is definitely true with his two brothers. He's stupidly clingy and protective of them.
He also has a bad habit of trying to be helpful by being domineering. It isn't unusual for him to try to take charge of a situation, feeling that he knows what's best. If he can't take the lead, then he may also try manipulating from behind the scenes. When it comes to control, he's very obsessive about it, though mostly without realizing he's acting that way.
Another large issue for him, is that he suffers from identity crises a lot. If he ever happened to see someone who, say, looks EXACTLY LIKE HIM he'd probably flip out (internally, of course.)
But despite all this, he does his best to play it off cool. He isn't the most expressive person so it's easy for him to seem cold and calculating and charismatic, like how he wants everyone to see him, but the truth of the matter is that he's a huge nerd with anxiety problems and doesn't know how to deal with any of it.
Dirk likes to joke around. Being a Strider, he is a man devoted to the art of irony and takes pride in the juxtaposition of silliness and over the top behavior with his stoic outward personality. It's even better when his jokes go over people's heads because they can't overlook his serious tone.
What would be your character’s major or occupation? It’s fine to be undecided, and you can change it later if you like! Dirk is an alumni of Hussie University, where he studied Robotics. He attended a vocational school during his later high school years, giving him a head start in college that granted him the option to graduate early. As far as careers go, he remains undecided and mostly works idly on projects or fixes computers for spare cash. He toys with the idea of returning to school just for something to do.
Give a physical description of your character: Dirk is a decently sized guy, standing at 5'11" with slightly broad shoulders and a body built with lean muscle. His hair is naturally flaxen, his skin somewhat tanned with freckles occasionally brought to surface by exposure to enough sun, and his eyes are a rather intense amber color, often mistaken for being straight up orange.
Give an example post of your character in this AU: Today was another boring day of isolation and tireless work for Dirk Strider, who had just about hit his limit for tedium. Still, his stubborn nature made it difficult for him to pry himself away from the open computer case, even while he stared out the window, deftly spinning a tiny screwdriver between his fingers. The sun was actually out, an occurrence that rarely came in Portland this time of year.
The internal battle continued as he sat back in his chair, a long sigh passing through his nostrils. The screwdriver was now being tossed between both hands, where tricks of the hand were growing more impressive. It was a shame no one was around to see such a pointlessly complex display. Some applause sure would be nice right about now.
His pupils darted to the corners of his eyes, catching a glimpse of his phone sitting at the edge of his work desk. Perhaps he should invite someone over... Or out. But despite the yearning for human interaction and the kiss of sun against his skin, he opted to immerse himself further in his work. These computers weren't going to build themselves, after all.
