Pe’Ahi is a popular surifing spot located in Maui, which is part of the Hawaiian Islands.

We played The Raveonettes on our Year One winter broadcasting season, close to our genesis as a radio show. Nic Endo’s “Aly, Walk With Me” RMX (2008) was what had us pay attention. Then Pe’Ahi came along and sealed the deal. It was one of the first things that remind me of my new residency in Ronkonkoma, the noise show in Output, having my first deluxe tablet, and one trip to the ticket arcade. “Sisters” and “A Hell Below” enjoyed airplay on our show, two parts of an album that was blaring with stammering guitar riffs, black-eye drums, and washes of high-pressurized noise that we will never forget for as long as we live.

The First Ever Women’s Big Wave Tour Has Come To A Close

The World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour (BWT) 2016/2017 season has officially ended, having started with the Northern Hemisphere window October 15th, 2016. During this period of time competitors had to overcome the waves of Nazaré in Portugal, Pe’ahi in Hawaii and Todos Santos in Mexico and for the first time ever, a women’s BWT event was ran as well!

This tour invited 12 of the world’s top female chargers battling to be the best. The women were able to take on either Pe’ahi or Todos Santos, depending on the conditions. Two Semifinals of six women in each heat would narrow the field, with three moving on from each Semifinal to the Final. Here’s more information on how the Women’s event worked.

With the season’s close today, February 28, 2017 Paige Alms of Hawaii claimed the top spot, becoming the first ever women’s Big Wave Tour champion. Paige was among Pe’ahi’s core group of female chargers, putting her name on the big-wave map when she scored an incredible barrel at Jaws two years ago.

“Being the first Big Wave Women’s Champion at Pe’ahi is an amazing feeling,” said Alms. “That was a win for women’s surfing and a win for the Maui community. It wasn’t just a win for me.”

Congratulations are in order for Grant “Twiggy” Baker for being the Men’s 2016/2017 Big Wave Tour World Champion! “To be the Big Wave Tour Champion means the world to me,” Baker said. “I put a lot of time and effort this year and it is amazing that it has paid off.” This is Twiggy’s second time winning the Big Wave title, his first being in 2013.
