A quiet whisper from above and a gentle shake of your shoulder pull you from the dream you were having (battling it out with Eagly in a game of Just Dance—which you were winning, thank you very much) and back to the edges of consciousness.
"Mmm," you mutter, the only noise you can muster as you turn your head deeper into the pillows.
To anybody else, this would be a universal sign of 'leave me alone.'
To Adrian Chase, it's simply an opportunity to get creative.
"Babe." He's louder now, lying right next to you and stroking a finger down your cheek in the hopes that the sensation tickles and makes you open your eyes.
"Is something wrong? Did you get stabbed again?" You don't think that's the case, considering he eschewed patrol in favor of a date night with you, but it never hurts to ask.
"No, nothing like that, you silly goose. Listen!" You crack an eye open to see him gesturing towards the open window.
Although you want to grumble at being woken up in this way, for this reason, you know that the only person you have to blame for this is yourself.
To say Adrian's been feeling lost since Project Butterfly was resolved would be an understatement. The 11th Street Kids had basically been patted on the back in thanks for saving the entire human race and sent on their way, back to whatever normal was for them before they all converged on Evergreen. To go from being contracted by the government and getting to do the superhero stuff he'd been dreaming of, back to scrubbing dishes by day and harassing drunk graffiti artists at night...was hard on him.
Adrian's spent the past six months practically glued to his phone in the hopes that something would happen. That Chris would find a new alien species and need help, that Harcourt would manage to get an intelligence job and recommend Adrian for one too, that Adebayo or Economos would use their current Fed connections to come up with a way for Adrian to live up to his full Vigilante potential. It was driving him slowly crazy, which, in turn, was driving you slowly crazy watching your boyfriend put himself through this.
"What if you were to get a hobby?" you suggested one day, finally fed up at the brusque way Economos shrugged him off over the phone and the subsequent dejection on Adrian's face.
"Why?"
"To keep your skills sharp until you're needed?" It wasn't the actual reason, of course, but you were picking your words carefully in the hopes that it would pique Adrian's enigmatic fascinations.
"Well...what hobby should I do?"
"I don't know, honey, it depends on what interests you. Photography, woodworking, painting—"
Adrian's face, always an open book that you've learned from cover to cover, was wildly unimpressed at these suggestions. Panicking, you pivoted.
"Um, bird-watching?"
"Ooh!" His eyes grew wide, phone forgotten at his side. "Like, just...watching birds?"
"And learning about them."
"Sick."
You bought him his first bird-watching book—whatever had the most reviews and the highest stars—and from the moment that he first thumbed through it, Adrian Chase was hooked. In a matter of weeks, your suggestion of a hobby had blown up into a full-on hyperfixation, with you ending up at the receiving end of these newly learned bird facts more often than not.
Unfortunately, it would appear that nowhere and no time is safe from learning about birds.
"Which owl is it this time, Adrian?" you ask, able to pick up on the noise easily. What your partner learns about in the middle of a hyperfixation, you inevitably learn about too.
"It's a Northern Saw-whet," he says proudly. "You can tell because of how high-pitched their call is! Too-too-too."
"You're getting really good at your owl calls." It's true; he's always been scary good at impressions, and it appears that extends to animals as well.
"Thanks!" You earn yourself a kiss on the cheek with that compliment, and you can't help but smile; you're so in love with this man that only he could wake you up in the middle of the night to tell you about an owl outside, and your reaction wouldn't be violence.
Now that the owl has been properly identified and the identifier has been properly commended, your eyes begin to close once more in the hopes that you can resume your dream with a different bird. Adrian lies down once more, maneuvering your arms so you're holding him, and you assume that's that for the night.
"Do you want to hear some facts about them?" Adrian asks.
You assumed wrong, then.
"Only if you're okay with me falling back to sleep in the middle of your facts." If it weren't an ungodly hour of the morning, you'd feel bad for not paying attention to his facts. At this hour, though, just attempting to listen is you giving 100% of your effort.
"That's fine! I'll just recap what you miss at breakfast."
"Waffles?" you ask sleepily.
"With chocolate chips," Adrian promises, lifting your hand so that he can kiss the back of it before taking a deep breath that signifies he's about to infodump. "Did you know that female saw-whets keep their nests, like, scary clean?
"I did not know that," you mumble through a yawn.
"It's true! They only stay with their babies until they're about eighteen days old, then..."
That's as far as you make it, though Adrian continues to happily yap until he tires himself out as well.
Prompt: Adrian walks into the break room at Checkmate to find you crying and tries to calm you down and distract you the only way he knows how.
Warnings: References to sex and murder. General themes as seen on Peacemaker.
A/N: I have not written in so long! I was just feeling it today. I’m still heavy on the Peacemaker fandom, I just haven’t been online much recently. If you’re new please checkout my Masterlist or my AO3 adriansglasses. Thanks!!
“I- I feel like I should be doing more, but I don’t know what to do. I’m sorry.”
“Just keep talking. Please.”
“About what?”
“About anything. Please I just wanna hear your voice.”
He paused, shifting a bit. He wasn’t used to that. He was so used to everyone telling him to shut up. He was so used to pushing himself into spaces, begging to be heard. He always tried to make himself useful. That’s why other people kept each other around right? Because they’re useful? Usually when he fucked something up or when someone was upset they’d shoo him away. He’d lose his usefulness, and therefore not be wanted around anymore. He couldn’t wrap his head around why you were still clinging to him. He relaxed into your hold a bit and began to rub your back. This is what Ads had done for him when he was crying in her arms. Usually he hated touch he couldn’t anticipate, but this was different. He walked into the break room at Checkmate to find you crying. He didn’t think. He just began to act. At first he thought you were hurt. Why else would you be doubled over in a chair crying late at work when you thought everyone else had left for the night? When he asked if you were okay, you only cried harder. Upon putting his hands on you, you’d collapsed into him. That’s how you’d found yourselves in this position.
“Anything, please. Just talk about something you could go on forever about.” You begged.
He pauses to think.
“Did you know that the Starry Flounder can live in saltwater or freshwater?” He asks.
“No- I- I didn’t know that.” You hiccup, your voice horse from crying. “I thought they were only in the ocean.”
“Nope, they can do both. They’re also carnivores, but they only eat small stuff like worms and other small fish, but I’m sure they’d eat people if they were chopped up small enough.”
“Oh… that’s cool I guess.” You think about his statement, deciding not to question it. You’d both seen some fucked up shit in your line of work. In truth that’s why you had been crying. You were burnt out and it felt like everyone’s lives and the weight of the world was quite literally on your shoulders. You didn’t trust your capability to do good anymore. Your body and your mind had started to crack.
“Well, if you like herbivores instead I can tell you about Green Sea Turtles. They usually live like 70 years or sometimes even longer. They’ve been around since dinosaurs, but they’re endangered now because humans want their soup and jewelry. I mean like that’s so stupid. Imagine if giant aliens came down one day and hunted us until we were endangered just for soup and jewelry, even though we’d been around for eons. Not to mention it’s totally illegal. If I ever get my hands on those motherfuckers they’ll be lucky I don’t turn them into soup and jewelry. That’s just fucked up and kinda disgusting.” Adrian rants.
“You’re right, Adrian. It’s not very kind.” You let out a small laugh. Usually the others dismissed his rants, but you always heard him out. Harcourt always gave you shit for getting him going, but you loved hearing him talk. His mind was always so interesting and you loved to pick it. The others thought Adrian was weird, and yeah he was, but you never saw that as a bad thing. You wouldn’t want him to change because then he wouldn’t be Adrian anymore. You admired his passion, even if at times it was misplaced. He cared more about the smallest fish in the sea than any of your other friends cared about the world as a whole.
As time went on, he continued to share more animal facts and your mind began to calm. His voice cut through all the noise in your head and you were finally able to focus on something else and find some peace. If anyone had walked in to see you practically sitting in Adrian’s lap cuddled closely with a tear stained face as he spewed animal facts the team would never let it go, but you’re not sure you cared. This was the most at peace you’d felt in weeks.
“Why just sea animals?” You asked, as it dawned on you that he had only been naming off water based animals.
“Oh, sorry, did you want forest dwellers? I wasn’t sure what kind of animals were your favorite, I just remembered last summer when we had to go to the beach for that mission and I don’t think I’d ever seen you that happy. I just wanted to make you happy again, so you I thought maybe if I talked about animals that lived off the coast of Washington…” He explains.
“Oh, Adrian.” Your face starts to heat up. “I didn’t think anyone paid that much attention to me.”
“I do.” He says very bluntly.
The way he says it so matter of factly makes you forget all about your troubles before. You’d always liked Adrian, but you’d never heard of him having a partner before. You tried not to think much about it. You didn’t have a chance and to get rejected and have to still work together would be mortifying.
“Did I do something wrong? Did I miss a social que again? Economos says I do that a lot.” He ponders.
“No, you’re okay, I just… I never realized how much you cared.” You smile.
“Of course I care about you. If I didn’t care about you I wouldn’t have you let you play my vintage gameboy that day you were excited I brought it to headquarters.” He says matter of factly.
You think back to the gameboy. He had brought in the exact one you had when you were a kid and he was playing one of your favorite games. You start to think about all of the little things he’d do for you or share with you that he didn’t do for the others. Was this his own way of trying to hint he liked you back?
CRUNCH
Your thoughts are interrupted by the crack of a chip. You turn around to see Judomaster having taken a bag of Hot Cheetos from the break room cabinet.
“What are you freaks doing? Is this some crazy forplay?” He finally speaks up. That quiet sneaky little son of a bitch.
“No, not in the work break room. They were just having a bad day so I was telling them animal facts.” Adrian explains. Your face must have been tomato red at this point.
“Sure, take your weird dirty talk somewhere else. We each lunch on that table.” He says, continuing to snack.
“Do you ever go home?” You ask Judomaster.
“If I have a home, I’m not telling you where it is.” He says.
“Well, duh. I wouldn’t expect you to. I haven’t even seen your real face.” You sigh.
“That’s the way to go man. Everyone only saw my face because my mask got ripped off on a mission.” Adrian pouted.
“Well I’m glad I know what you face looks like now.” You smile.
“You people are disgusting.” Judomaster walks out.
You were mortified, but whatever. Who was he gonna gossip to anyway? He mostly kept to himself.
“I thought we were the only ones here.” You laugh it off.
“Yeah, and what was he going on about anyway? If we were gonna have sex why would it be on the break room table? We eat on this table. Plus public sex is illegal. I have a perfectly good bed at home.” He says very bluntly. Your face goes red again. Was he insinuating you SHOULD have sex or is this just a “what if” scenario gotten way out of hand? Your earlier troubles were long since forgotten. You had new, slightly less depressing and anxiety inducing, problems to think about.
“Uh yeah…” You laugh awkwardly. “But anyway thanks for the facts. It definitely helped take my mind off things.” You awkwardly raise your hand for a high five.
“Aw hell yeah!” He high-fives you back. “You can call me anytime when you need me I have soooo many animal facts.”
You smile, “I might take you up on that. Goodnight, Adrian.”
SUMMARY: Adrian is obsessed with your big boobs, so he wants to try something new…
TAGS/WARNINGS: smut, tit fucking, established relationship, facial, Adrian Chase whimpers, no usage of Y/N, reader’s pronouns and gender aren’t mentioned though there is obvious mention of them having breasts and one singular mention of having a vagina
It was a simple night with you and your boyfriend, Adrian. You both had off the next day, so you were chilling in bed, cozy under a blanket, and watching TV. On was a movie you both had seen a hundred times that you didn’t really need to pay attention too, it was mainly just background noise as you both used your phones.
Adrian groaned and tossed down his phone, rolling over and plopping his head down onto your chest. “Oo raccoon,” He mumbled as he watched you scroll through Instagram. He reached a hand up and double-tapped the video.
“What if I didn’t like that?” You questioned.
“Well, I did, and I want more to show up on your feed so you send them to me.”
“Okay, I’ll send you whatever raccoon stuff I see.” You softly laughed. “Are raccoons your new animal of the week?”
“Yeah, I like their grubby little hands. You know, they build things out of all the trash they collect.”
“Hm, fun. I didn’t know that,” You replied. You knew he was probably wrong, but you also knew better than to try and argue with him about animal facts.
Adrian’s hand skimmed up your torso before settling on one of your breasts, giving it a squeeze. He had a tendency to do this, half the time there wasn’t even any sexual intention behind the touch. It was like the man enjoyed using your large breasts as stress balls. You didn’t mind though, it was usually never anything too distracting while you guys relaxed. Emphasis on usually, because now he was currently tugging down your tank top to expose them and continue to massage the soft fat in his hand.
“Yeah?” You spoke up as you set your phone aside.
“Sorry, babe. You know I like how squishy they are. They’re kinda like slime.”
“Slime? You’re comparing my boobs to slime?”
“Because they’re both fun to play with! I don’t think your tits are slimy or anything. I wouldn’t be touching them all the time if they were.”
“Good to know.” You lightheartedly rolled your eyes.
He rolled over on top of you so he was straddling your hips, pushing your breasts together, and burying his face into them. He littered a couple of gentle bites over them before peeking up at you with big puppy dog eyes. “Babe, can I fuck them? Please?”
“You want to fuck my tits?”
“Yeah, come on! It’d be fun. Something new to try.” He grinned, resting his chin against them.
“I don’t know… I guess, if you really want to.”
“I’m not gonna force you if you don’t want to. That’s a crime and a really bad one.”
“You’re not forcing me. I’m fine with doing it, I just don’t see the appeal when we can fuck or I can suck your dick.” You laughed.
“Well, we do that all the time. I thought I’d be fun to spice things up and also, fuck, I just really love your tits and they’d feel so good wrapped around my dick.”
You rolled your eyes again. “You don’t have to keep giving me reasons, Adrian. I already said yes.”
“Now?”
“Yeah, now.”
“Good because I’m already hard.”
“I know. I can feel it pressing into my stomach.”
Adrian laughed and sat up off your breasts, hands gripping the hem of your tank top and pulling it off of you before he struggled to get off his sweatpants and briefs. He paused for a moment and looked at you. “Lube.”
“My nightstand. Top drawer.”
He quickly reached over and opened the drawer, pulling out the bottle. It had been bought only a couple of months ago, and already so much of it was gone. Whoops. Not your fault that you guys used sex to bond with each other. He moved so he was straddling your ribcage, gently easing his weight down onto you. “You’re fine, right? I’m not crushing you?”
“I’m fine. I’m not made of glass, and you’re not that heavy.”
“Good,” He replied with a big, boyish grin, then popped open the top of the lube bottle and squirted it between the valley of your breasts.
“Ah– Jesus Christ. Cold.” You hissed.
“Oh! Sorry, sorry,” He quickly spoke with a cringe.
“It’s fine. Nothing you can really do about that now that it’s on me.”
Adrian stared down at your chest for a moment, almost mesmerized, before he snapped back to reality. “Okay, now squeeze them together.”
“How hard?” You questioned with furrowed brows.
“I don’t know. As hard as you can, I guess. I’ve never fucked someone’s tits before.” He shrugged. You stared down at your breasts as you put your hands on either side of them and pressed them together as hard as you could (without hurting yourself), then peered back up at Adrian. You could see the excitement growing on his face as he looked between you and your squeezed-together boobs. His one hand moved up to brace against the wall as he grabbed the base of his cock. He pressed his tip against the soft flesh, sliding it up and down the lube that leaked from the slit, a quiet moan leaving him as he tried to find the right spot that his dick would glide into.
He took in a shaky breath as he pushed in, his hand moving to gently rest on top of the swell of your breasts as he bottomed out. You were eye-to-eye with his glistening tip as it pushed out the top, precum already leaking from just one thrust between your slick tits.
“Shit, this feels– I don’t even know how it feels, but it feels good,” He softly said, his voice barely even a whisper. He pulled out almost all the way before plunging back in and starting a steady pace. You could feel his dick sliding up and down your sternum, and he could feel the heavy thrum of your heartbeat. You pressed your breasts together a bit harder in a rhythmic pattern, attempting to mimic the fluttering and clenching of your pussy around him. He couldn’t stop the whimper from escaping his mouth, fingertips pressing into your flesh as he quickly bit his bottom lip to try and silence himself.
“No, come on. You know I like hearing when you get all whimpery. It’s hot.” You pouted.
“Oh, fucking– No, I hate sounding like a little bitch!” He whined, squeezing his eyes shut as he picked up the pace some, each thrust making a lewd squelching noise.
“But I like it. Let’s me know how good you feel, how close you are… Come on. Let me know how good this feels, Adrian.” You lowly spoke, staring up at him with big, pleading eyes. A pitiful whimper left him as his hips repeatedly slapped against the underside of your breasts, his head falling limp. A smile tugged at your lips as he finally gave you what you wanted. Your eyes dropped back down, where you watched his cock pop out at you a couple of times before an idea popped into your head. You craned your neck forward and parted your lips, your tongue lolling out of your mouth before eagerly flicking up the sensitive tip. Adrian gasped almost painfully, eyes snapping open to meet yours again.
“Don’t– God, don’t do that.” He breathed out.
“Why?” You played dumb with another quick lick.
“No, no, no. Babe–” You gave a third lick, and without warning, his hips slammed flush against your tits and hot, white ropes of cum shot out over your face and tongue. He choked out a ragged breath as he stared down at you for a moment, eyes wide behind his wire-framed glasses.
“Oh shit, sorry! Fuck! Damnit! I didn’t mean to do that, sorry.” He stumbled over his words as he quickly pulled out from between your breasts, hopping off the bed and running to the bathroom while Winnie the Pooh-ing it. “Stay right there!”
You did just that, laying your head back down on the pillow with a sigh, swallowing the cum that had made it into your mouth, which wasn’t much. You could hear the closet open and water running, and soon enough, Adrian was hurrying back out, sitting beside you on the bed.
His face came into view as you stared straight-faced at the ceiling, and a grin slowly spread across his. “You look good with my cum all over your face.” You continued to stare at him with a deadpan look. “What? It’s true. You’ve never been hotter than you are right now.”
“If you don’t wipe your cum off of my face, I’m smearing it all over yours,” You responded.
“Okay, alright… Can I take a picture first?” There were those puppy dog eyes of his again.
“No.”
“Next time then.” He mumbled to himself as he gently began wiping your face off with the wet washcloth. “It’s even hotter, you being all annoyed at me with my cum all on your face.”

“You don’t have a girlfriend, Adrian.” Adrian stood, mouth agape. Adrian didn’t understand why he would lie about having a girlfriend as amazing and awesome as you. To Adrian, it seemed like a pretty stupid thing to lie about. All Chris needed to do was locate you and ask.
“Yeah, I do. She’s smokin’ hot, and she’s also super intelligent; she’s got a degree. She also likes listening to my bird facts.” Adrian frowned at Chris's boisterous laughter. Nothing about this conversation was remotely funny.
“Paying someone to hang out with you doesn’t mean you're in a relationship.”
“I don’t pay her anything! She actually likes me,” Chris scoffed. “You’re jealous, I’ve found someone! I don’t have to have casual sex to fulfil a void.”
“I could have anyone I wanted.”
“Except Harcourt is unavailable.”
“Would you shut the fuck? You know nothing!”
“I know my relationship is healthier than yours will ever be.”
“There is no girlfriend!” Adrian flipped through the contacts in his phone until he reached your contact. He pressed the button hastily, waiting for the phone to ring.
Once
Twice
“Adrian.”
“Babe, will you tell him?”Your eyes rolled as you leaned on the kitchen counter.
“Please tell me we’re not having this conversation again.”
“He said I’m paying you.” Rubbing your forehead , you took a breath to compose yourself.
“Chris, we’ve been together for two fucking years, at some point you’re going to have to get used to it. Now, can you stop winding Adrian up, please?”
“There’s something suspicious going on. There is no way you’re willingly with someone like Adrian!”
“I don’t care what you think! Now, can you leave him alone so he can come home, please?”

"are you fucking kidding me?!" [your name] yelled, bursting out of her boyfriend's bedroom.
"i can explain," the man sighed, trailing behind her.
"so let me recap: you cheat on me with your colleague, you beg me to stay—"
"i wouldn't say 'beg'," her ex interrupted arrogantly, raising his hands in defence.
"you were on your knees, crying like a little bitch," she reminded him. "anyways— we go to couples' therapy, because— i don't know? i'm stupid enough to forgive cheating!" she raised her hands to her head like a maniac, almost ripping off two big chunks of her hair. "just for you to go out of your way to have a threesome with the same colleague, and another one!?" she finished, eyes wide.
"yup," the man answered without hesitation.
cheating was a mild inconvenience after all.
[your name] was enraged, her insides trembling like an erupting volcano. her life had turned into a terrible wattpad story. she did not feel like crying; she felt like punching the man standing butt-naked in front of her and maybe screaming her frustration out into the wild. the situation was beyond comprehension.
fuck mondays.
this morning, as she walked into work, she tried to be optimistic. she had not missed her alarms, and her uniform had completely dried overnight. sounded like the beginning of a great day. she was ready to take on the world. perhaps today she would make great tips. she would not spill anything on the floor (or on a customer). the customers would respect the restroom, leaving it as clean as possible, instead of using it to make contemporary art by smearing their poop on the toilet seat. her creepy manager would not flirt with her or her high school student colleagues.
all of that did happen.
she also got fired.
[your name] had been fantasising about quitting this job for months; the opportunity was snatched from her. her dream of throwing her mustard-coloured uniform in her manager's face, and flipping off the whole diner, was gone because she had to stick to this minimum-wage job to pay her bills.
why was she fired, you may ask?
she had, quote unquote, an attitude.
yes, you heard correctly.
an attitude.
apparently, turning down your manager's advances was disrespectful and created a hostile work environment.
the worse is that she still had to finish her shift. technically, she was free to go, but with her dignity long gone, she sucked it up for the paycheck.
once her shift was done, she walked out of the diner without a word. she barely knew the people she had worked with; as mentioned previously, most were teenagers. what would she have in common with kids?
her lack of a driving license for sure.
[your name] walked under the dim lights of the parking lot. once she reached her bike, which she had secured with a chain, she mindlessly searched through her purse for the key, but stopped in her tracks as she noticed both wheels were missing. some asshole probably tried to steal the whole bike, abandoning halfway through and settling for the deflated wheels.
the young woman rubbed her face in frustration. she tightly clenched her fists and took three deep, long breaths. that bike was basically junk; as practical as it was, she would have eventually gotten rid of it.
fortunately, her boyfriend had mondays off. she could call, and he would pick her up.
after five attempts to reach him, two voicemails and ten text messages, she gave up and turned to uber. as she waited for her driver to arrive, she contemplated on the reason for his uncharacteristic silence. he was constantly on his phone, even during date nights and dinner. after she had found out about the adulterous nature of her boyfriend and his colleague's relationship, they decided to move in together. he owned his own apartment, well, actually, his father owned the building; he lived there for free, yet, for some reason, [your name] still had to pay rent. her thought process was that living as a couple would only strengthen their relationship, or so she thought.
she could not have been more wrong.
living with him was essentially taking care of a grown baby: he never cleaned the dishes, scattered clothes everywhere around the apartment like it was a scavenger hunt, put whatever he wanted on the television, and overall, disregarded [your name]'s wants.
the young woman was in denial. she truly believed he wanted to change for the better; he had agreed to go to therapy together, which had to mean something. right?
he was more reluctant, actually...
but he still agreed!
the car eventually arrived. she greeted the driver, identifying herself and making sure the driver's plate matched the description on the app (getting kidnapped would have been the cherry on top). she made herself comfortable in the back seat, grabbed her phone and texted her boyfriend she had found another way to come home.
no answer.
the ride home was quiet. the optimism from the morning had completely faded, leaving room for quietness to fill her mind. if the driver fancied a conversation, he would have been met with a cold brick wall of negativity.
fifteen minutes later, she was finally home. the cold wind hit her cheeks as she bid goodbye to her driver. [your name] jogged to the building's entrance and rushed to the elevator.
it was the end of the day, she could rest. tomorrow was a new day.
she fumbled with the apartment's key and clumsily opened the door.
as she entered their shared apartment, she threw her purse, tossed the keys and her shoes, then headed for the bathroom to take a well-deserved, long, hot shower. all she wanted was to snuggle under a blanket in front of her comfort movie with some snacks; unwind from another shitty day. what she did not expect was to hear loud moans, and even less to witness her boyfriend getting fucked in the ass by some random girl with a pink strap-on, as another girl wearing one of her lingerie sets, who she recognised from the nudes she had found on his phone three months ago, recorded.
ensued her rage.
"you're unbelievable," she spat out in disgust. she went to grab her purse and her shoes, preparing to leave. before she could reach for the doorknob, the man grabbed her by the wrist, forcing her to stay.
"c'mon babe," he whined, frowning. "we can work this out," he pleaded, never loosening his grip.
"i've tried working things out, but you never make any efforts!" [your name] shouted back, breaking free from his grip.
"just hear me out!" he argued, pushing the door closed when she tried to open it, trapping her without a chance at escaping.
"just let me go, asshole!" she pushed him away.
"how about an open relationship, huh?" he suggested as a last resort, with a proud expression. can you believe this man has not been awarded a noble prize yet?
"wow... fuck you, i'm done," she said, appalled as she finally ran out of the apartment.
"you know what? go fuck yourself bitch!" he cursed her, standing naked in the hallway for the neighbours to gawk at him as she ran down the stairs. "you're gonna come back crawling for me!" he finished, as the door slammed shut behind him, heading back to his bedroom to his mistresses.
[your name] was on autopilot. walking through the streets of the agitated city, she did not check left and right before crossing the streets, did not bother avoiding colliding with strangers, and eventually found herself in an empty park. she sat on a bench, staring at the trees and their unbothered dancing leaves.
"what am i gonna do?" she sobbed as the adrenaline died down.
she needed a place to stay. she could use some of her money for a night at the nearest hotel. it would only help her for one night, then she would be back to step one. she did not have any friends in the city, and the only family she had was back in gotham. there was no way she would set foot back in that damned city.
wait.
did leota and her wife not move to evergreen city?
[your name] grabbed her phone out of her purse and rushed to leota's contact name. she pressed the call button and prayed for her cousin to answer. unfortunately, today was going to be horrible until midnight as she was left on voicemail.
"hey ads! i don't have time to explain, but i'mma pass by your apartment tonight. so leave the door open, please," she stated enigmatically. "oh, it's me, by the way, [your name], your sister from another womb," she chuckled as she hung up and went back to the uber app. evergreen city was three cities away from her location; the ride should not be more than twenty dollars.
[your name] exhaled, her shoulder finally relaxing from all the pressure of the day. she knew adebayo would be able to make her forget about everything and help her see the bright side of it all.
after paying for another uber, biting her tongue and reminding herself not to look at her bank account's balance, she got out of the car, avoiding eye contact as she did not leave a tip (as if she could afford it) and stood in front of the hotel. the kind where families with low income lived, where the rooms were big enough for the kids, and the kitchen was functional.
she entered the building; it was clean, nothing eye-catching. she fixed her purse higher on her shoulder and headed to the receptionist counter, where an exhausted forty-something woman failed to keep her eyes open.
"hi, excuse me?" [your name] softly greeted. the employee sighed, looking at her eyelashes to the young woman.
"good evening, ma'am. how can i help you?" the woman answered flatly.
"could i get leota adebayo's room number, please?" she requested. [your name] was possibly over-confident. no responsible employee would give out such personal information without asking for some sort of identification.
"room 251, second floor."
that was easy.
"thanks!" her voice got higher from nervousness. it felt wrong to give somebody's information this fast and without any difficulties. how much had this lady disclosed about the customers of this hotel?
[your name] walked around the corridor of the second floor, looking for her cousin's room. her first impression of the building quickly crumbled as the carpets had not seen a vacuum for ten years, the lights flickered, and the cleaning supplies cart was left unattended with full trash bags.
room 251.
the young woman knocked on the door, announcing herself; nobody answered. she tried a second time, knocking harder. on her third try, she grabbed the doorknob to force the door open, unsuccessfully.
nobody was home.
a few options were possible.
she could wait until tomorrow morning for someone to come home.
she could pay for a room for the night.
she could call leota again or try her luck with keeya.
or she could not even consider any of these reasonable options and break in.
sounded better.
she rummaged through her purse, looking for a bobby pin. as she got impatient, she threw her bag on the floor, kneeling as she put both hands inside.
no bobby pin.
she had a credit card, though.
after months, the little rectangular piece of plastic would be used for more than buying groceries and declined payments.
she inserted her card between the door and the doorframe, careful not to fold it. she moved the card up and down, her ear close to the doorknob to hear the lock.
after a couple of tries, she turned the doorknob, pushing the door with her full body weight. [your name] almost tripped when the door flung open, leota's dogs barking out of fear until they recognised who she was.
"she's still making you wear those ugly ass outfits." [your name] cooed, crouching as the small dogs greeted her by jumping on her.
the dogs' excitement somehow comforted her. unlike what she walked in on at her now ex-boyfriend's apartment, this was a much better trio to hang out with.
the young woman took in her surroundings as she plopped onto the couch, making herself at home. she regretted leaving the apartment in such a rush; she did not have any hygiene products or a clean change of clothes, but she did not see herself walking into her old bedroom to grab some of her belongings with two naked girls in her bedsheets. they would have probably asked her to join instead of being a mood-killer; [your name] would have turned into an actual killer, using that strap-on to put out their eyes. nevertheless, she could not blame them. her boyfriend cheated on her, his colleagues did not owe anything to [your name], although they knew he was in a relationship.
deep down, the young woman blamed herself. she is the one who stayed with him despite everything he had put her through.
[your name] looked down at her clothes. she considered sleeping in her underwear and borrowing the blanket in the bedroom.
sleep consumed her; one night in her greasy uniform would not give her a rash.
she hoped.
the risk of red blotches on her skin gave her enough motivation to get undressed. she wiggled on the couch like a worm, slipping out of the cheap mustard dress, too lazy to get up.
she kicked her shoes off her feet, put her purse on the coffee table, and laid down on the hard couch, moving around to find a position that would let her fall asleep.
six in the morning. the birds were chirping, and garbage collectors in evergreen city had just started their shift. retired people were already awake, getting ready to stand in front of closed grocery stores to be the first to ruin the underpaid cashiers' day.
"why did she ask you, out of everyone, to get her badge for her?" adrian whined as chris groaned when they entered the hotel.
adebayo had forgotten her badge in her hotel room. murn had sent her and economos to locate more butterflies in powerful positions. they had been hiding in the van for more than a day; leaving their hiding spot would supposedly alert the hypothetical threat. john was with her, harcourt made it clear she hated adebayo, hence she did not dare ask her for the favour, murn was her boss, and adrian was absolutely out of the question. chris was the only one left to retrieve the missing badge.
"because i could, and she asked nicely," chris quickly said as they got out of the vigilante-mobile, slamming the door shut behind him. it was too early to hold a conversation, especially with adrian.
"are you sure you're not doing it so people don't label you as a raging racist piece of shit?" adrian questioned, a sympathetic look in his eyes.
"no... otherwise she wouldn't have asked me." chris surprisingly controlled his temper.
"why couldn't she ask john? or even harcourt? she isn't your best friend forever and ever in the whole wide world and beyond, who loves you more than anything. i am!" he complained, referring to himself with his hands. ignorant of chris's apparent irritation, adrian went on with his rant, which he had started the moment he offered chris a ride to adebayo's place.
"are we playing twenty questions?" chris ultimately lost his cool. "also, didn't you want me to be her best friend so people didn't think i was racist?" he asked.
"i simply suggested that if you were to get close to one of the people you're working with, that it should be her. but you could have also killed your racist dad!" he pointed out.
an obvious and reasonable option.
chris deadpanned, his mouth slightly open, staring at his partner. he tried to find the words without insulting him, but he knew adrian more than anyone. he quickly gave up and reached for the key, shaking his head in disappointment.
chris opened the door as adrian continued to talk.
"will you please shut the fuck up!" chris roared, unable to control his temper any longer. the door was slammed closed, causing the walls to vibrate.
before adrian could argue back, a presence in the room pulled the men out of their endless back-and-forth.
"ads, is that— what the fuck!" the noise had woken up [your name]. she stretched her arms, slowly opening her eyes. once she managed to take a peek at the room, she shrieked in terror, bringing the blanket closer to her chest, using it as a shield.
"decline your identity before we blow up your head," chris threatened, loading his gun as adrian's barrel was mere millimetres away from [your name]'s forehead.
"who the fuck are you?!" she yelled.
"we asked first." the masked man doubled down.
"my cousin lives here!" she blurted out. she was not going to play hero and pretend to be brave when she had two guns pointed at her by two strange men.
"wait— leota?" vigilante asked, prompting [your name] to quickly nod.
"dude, don't give out personal information to a suspect," peacemaker interjected in desperation.
"well, she can only be talking about leota— or maybe keeya." the masked man continued, as the one with the helmet groaned, lowering his weapon and rubbing his face with his free hand.
"she could be lying, or worse, she could be a you-know-what," the muscular man said.
"a what?" the masked man was genuinely confused.
"you know..." peacemaker mumbled. he leaned closer, whispering in vigilante's ear.
"oh! a butterfly!" he exclaimed, happy he understood what his friend insinuated.
"don't say it out loud! it's like if i revealed your secret identity," peacemaker yelled, dumbfounded by his friend's incapacity to shut his mouth.
"if you had, she would already be dead," he retorted, chuckling at the absurdity.
she used their distraction to her advantage, kicking the man in the mask on the inner side of the knee. unprepared to counterattack, adrian stumbled and fell to his side, grabbing his bruised knee and letting go of his weapon. [your name] threw herself on the ground, seized the huge rifle and aimed it at vigilante's head.
"you get out of here or i blow up his head," she stated, staring down peacemaker.
"please listen to her," adrian begged, getting flashbacks from the torture he suffered.
his pinky toe, and now his knee from the same leg.
they were probably going to need to amputate his leg now.
"you do it, you get your head blown up too." peacemaker composed himself, aiming his firearm right at her face. "we'll see if you have one of those in your head too." his voice deepened, as if what he said was badass.
"huh? a butterfly in my head? the fuck you smoked?!" she shouted in panic. was she the only sane person in the room?
peacemaker fidgeted in place. if he killed the woman who broke into adebayo's apartment, it could make things worse for the mission. the police were already after him now that the fingerprints did not match his father's; another murder would be suspicious. adebayo would probably not be mad at him; his actions were rooted in his core peaceful beliefs to protect innocents. that woman had illegally broken into someone's home. maybe she was a thief, or a murderer, as hypocritical as it was coming from a convicted serial killer. he was justified.
"you can kill him for all i care," peacemaker said. his manipulation tactics did not work the first time; why did he think it would work on the second try? [your name] frowned at the man's lack of empathy.
"not again..." the injured man on the floor moaned.
"hey man, i remembered i left my badge at the hq— what the fuck is going on?!" adebayo screamed as she was met with an unimaginable sight.
"we're protecting you," adrian explained, now lying on his back.
"what are you waiting for?!" [your name] shouted, staring at adebayo as if she had grown a second head. adebayo was way too calm. "these motherfuckers tried to kill me!" she accused, pointing her gun at both men.
"they're huh..." adebayo sighed, pinching her nose bridge. "these 'motherfuckers' are my colleagues... slash friends..." she looked at [your name] with an apologetic expression.
"what do you mean by your 'friends'?" the young woman questioned, in disbelief. everyone had lowered their weapons. peacemaker, seeing that adebayo was comfortable with the stranger, finally believed both were related, like the woman had claimed. [your name] was simply astounded by the stupidity of the situation.
"I met them at work," adebayo clarified, closing the door behind her. thankfully no one had fired a shot, or the neighbours would have been alarmed.
project butterfly was a secret mission, but everything that had occurred so far was pretty public.
"but that's not important. why are you here?" adebayo turned to her cousins, squinting.
"broke up with my ex," she said curtly, with a pointed look at adebayo, who nodded in understanding.
adebayo was aware of the dynamic between [your name] and her now ex-boyfriend. adebayo was [your name]'s confident and best friend; when the young woman found out about her boyfriend's infidelity, she ran to adebayo for consolation. late-night talks on the phone discussing her feelings and what course of action to take next. adebayo was in favour of the separation. [your name] was the most caring person she had the chance to know, and that man (or any man for that matter) did not deserve her kindness. therefore, you could guess what her reaction was when [your name] got back together with that dog of a man: utter disappointment.
adebayo could not blame her; she had never been in an abusive relationship. she was her mother's daughter and knew what it was to be manipulated, just not by her partner.
"alright, just get dressed, please," leota said, refering to the woman's current attire.
[your name] looked down at her body, the underwear did not leave much to the imagination. she rushed to the blanket on the couch and wrapped it around her exposed body.
"do you have anything i could wear?" she asked, avoiding eye contact with the two men.
"go to my room and take what you need." adebayo smiled. "stay as long as you need. you're home," she finished tenderly, [your name] returning the smile and mouthing a 'thank you' in return before leaving the room.
"i thought you didn't have family," peacemaker murmured.
"you assumed i didn't have family, i just don't tell you shit," adebayo replied, emphasising the first 'you'. the new addition to the small team was underestimated in her abilities; therefore, nobody really wanted to get to know her in comparison to how eager she was to work with them. all they knew was that she was a lesbian, in a way separated from her wife, thanks to a nude she accidentally exhibited for everyone to see, and that one of her dogs loved to wear costumes he most likely hated.
"c'mon, adrian, get up." peacemaker offered his hand to the young man.
"i can't, her hot cousin hit me in the knee. i'm gonna limp forever now," adrian moaned from the pain.
meanwhile in the bedroom, [your name] had changed into a shirt and sweatpants. she rolled her eyes at the masked man's, now identified as adrian, remark. the walls were thin, and the men loud. the end of her relationship marked a new beginning. this new life she was building for herself did not include another mediocre guy who would consider her like fresh meat, only to discard her like garbage the moment he became bored.
the door slammed when she walked back into the living room. adebayo sat down on the couch, her head buried in her hands. she lifted her head, eyes falling on her cousin.
"girl, you have the worst timing ever."
adebayo had to go back to work. [your name] stayed at this apartment with a promise of a long-needed conversation when she would be back.
after some alcohol, a movie and a pizza order, the conversation naturally flowed. keeya was not in the apartment because a woman, whom she now knew as harcourt, convinced leota that her wife was within hand's reach of danger. adebayo assured her cousin they were not on a break; protecting her loved ones was just a priority. fortunately, [your name] was not concerned by that, and adebayo could use the company. the latter had been trained in hand-to-hand combat at a young age and, just like adebayo, obtained her binks-fendelmire strategic combat certification at the age of eleven, as per her aunt's demands. amanda waller was an insensitive woman, but when it came to ambition and ensuring the future of women in her family in secret intelligence services, she was as ruthless and unapologetic as she was with her operational methods at work.
jobless and heartbroken, [your name] craved for a distraction. as the conversation about her shitty ex continued with roaring laughter, adebayo drunken state enlightened her decision-making skills. she called her mom to see if she had a job opportunity for her beloved niece.
nepotism.
this is how [your name] ended up sharing a desk with adebayo at their decaying headquarters and witnessing a gorilla get split in two.
murn only cared if she was competent enough. harcourt's anger could explode through the mouldy roof. john was overall a neat guy. she did not know what to think about chris after the way their first meeting went and his arrogance. adrian... well, adrian was adrian.
during their first actual meeting, adrian had tried to hide behind a tree to conceal his secret identity, in vain. she already knew his name, and she was part of the team. moreover, adebayo had already shown [your name] pictures she had taken (in secret) with the team, and a few of them included adrian outside of his vigilante persona.
"he's cute," she had thought, quickly pushing this terrorising idea to the back of her mind.
he texted her every day, morning and evening, as well as during their break days.
mind you, she had not given him her phone number.
despite his stalkerish proclivities, she texted him back.
he would send her videos of animals or cartoons he liked as a kid and still enjoyed as an adult, followed by a mermaid emoji.
their conversations on the phone were not as different as their texts, ranging from animal facts to his hobbies (killing).
"did you know ostrich bury their head in the sand?" adrian greeted her with another fact. no 'hello', straight to the point.
[your name] was lying on the couch, dozing off as the television played some uninteresting game show where people won cars and weekend trips to hawaii.
"adrian, it's eleven thirty..." she replied with a groggy voice.
"yeah, i know. thanks for telling me," he said, clueless as to why she was giving him this obvious information; his facts were much more fascinating. however, his mother raised him to be a polite young man, and he was grateful she cared to tell him.
"why are you calling me this late?" she pressed further. subtlety was not his strong suit.
"we just became friends, we gotta nurture this new bond," he explained as she hummed absentmindedly.
"you didn't answer my question," he insisted eagerly.
"adrian, that's only a thing in the looney tunes," [your name] chuckled.
"i'm pretty sure animals in cartoons act the same as the ones in real life," adrian affirmed confidently. "as a matter of fact, cartoons are drawn documentaries for kids. for example: i stay in touch with what happens in america through law and order. not the news. it's too depressing," he continued in one breath.
"did you know seals were vegetarians?" he continued before she could answer.
"i know that manatees are," she stated as adrian erupted in a fit of laughter at her knee-slapping joke.
"dont be silly," he said softly once he managed to catch his breath. "manatees don't exist. they're a metaphor for mermaids," he informed.
[your name], still lying on her back, tangled in her blanket, raised her head towards adebayo, who simply shook her as an indication not to contradict adrian. the phone was loud enough for her cousin to hear the man's crazy claims. she would be on the phone until dawn by entertaining his wisdom.
"but enough about me, i wanna know everything about you?" he expressed impatiently. "obviously as platonic friends, i'm not a creep, who would think that? not you, right?"
...
not at all suspicious.
"what do you wanna know, adrian?" she asked.
she did not expect the equivalent of an entire list of questions a kid on their first day in kindergarten would ask the first student they could potentially befriend to be thrown at her.
"what's your favourite food?"
"what's your favourite colour?"
"what's your favourite movie?"
basic questions. his voice was robotic. definitely writing down her answers on his phone.
she did not have the heart to stop him. nobody had ever been this curious about the frivolous things she liked. quite frankly, she enjoyed the attention more than she cared to admit. she felt like a hypocrite. on the one hand, she brushed off adrian's usual comments or attempts at getting close; on the other hand, she wanted him to persist. perhaps a man as cute as adrian, despite his unpredictable nature, could help her get over her previous relationship. regardless, the breakup was less than a week ago; she was not looking for anything serious or with no strings attached.
adrian was not going to be a rebound.
"are you still in love with your ex-boyfriend?"
...
that took a turn.
"why the fuck would you ask me this?" her heart dropped to the abyss of her abdomen. she instinctively sat up on the couch, flabbergasted by adrian's oblivious audacity. adebayo's eyes narrowed as she mouthed 'what the fuck'.
"don't worry! it's a way to get closer, you know, talking about unprocessed trauma and stuff," he assured, a huge smile plastered on his face.
"it's none of your business, adrian," she said sternly.
"okay, but you have my phone number if you need to talk about it. i never need to talk about how i feel since things just roll off my back," he offered. adrian may have appeared as a killing machine who relished in witnessing the light vanishing from the eyes of his victims. nevertheless, he consistently showed up for his friends.
in strange ways.
but he cared nonetheless.
"i'll put your favourite song as my ringtone for you so i answer right away." how did he know her favourite song? this was not one of the thousand questions he previously asked.
a few seconds of silence passed, which felt like eternity for [your name]. she wanted to hang up so bad. this conversation was incredibly awkward.
adrian was having the time of his life.
"is adebayo with you?" he wondered, almost as if to keep the conversation alive.
[your name] nodded, putting the phone on speaker and handing it to leota.
"hey, vij," leota greeted tiredly.
"you know what? you're like peacemaker and i! just not as amazing, no offence," he clarified, giggling.
"we should totally go on double dates!" he exclaimed enthusiastically.
"stop saying that, dude." she heard chris at the end of the line. adrian was practically attached to chris's hip, although the feeling was not mutual by the former task force x member.
"what? going on a date with my first best friend, my fifth best friend, and my fifth best friend's first best friend sounds incredible," adrian explained, his voice muffled as he placed his hand over the mic when addressing chris.
"people are gonna get the wrong idea," chris complained.
"that i love my best friend? duh! we do everything together: have threesomes together—" the curly-haired assassin said, unbothered.
"then it's just hanging out?" [your name] abruptly interjected. she could not care less about these two's sexual life. she would rather pluck out her eyes and clean her brain with bleach than imagine chris butt-naked having sex.
"that's just not true," adrian disagreed. "i hang out with my colleagues during work," he claimed. his coworkers undoubtedly begged to differ.
"anyway, i'm only here for a couple of weeks until i get back on my feet, so i can't. no, thanks," she gave him her final answer. honestly, even if she prolonged her stay at evergreen city, she would have turned his proposition down.
adrian was a psychopath who basically worshipped peacemaker, as for peacemaker, he was everything she avoided in someone. she did go through a shortcut by assuming adrian was just like chris, but associating yourself with someone spoke louder about you as an individual than your actions.
"okay, i'll let you think about it. nighty night!" he hung up. his persistence was getting pathetic.
[your name] threw her phone on the coffee table, letting her weight hit the cushion, eyes on the ceiling.
"adrian seems to like you," adebayo teased, pocking the young woman on the side.
"he likes everyone..." she argued back, unimpressed.
"he doesn't like everyone, he just talks to a lot and to everyone," adebayo corrected, her finger up like the emoji with thick glasses. [your name] chuckled, pushing her cousin's arm away as the latter laughed.
"anyways, after that job, i'm outta here," she confessed as an unusual silence consumed the room.
"what?" she carefully asked, frowning.
"don't you think you should stay?" adebayo suggested.
"why would i do that?" she huffed.
"i mean, it's pretty nice here," adebayo admitted. "it's not like you got a place to go," she informed the younger woman.
"ouch! no need to remind me how shitty my life is," she feigned offence, her hand over her chest.
"no, but, seriously. c'mon," adebayo whined through her laugh.
"'c'mon' what?" [your name] sighed, rolling her eyes. she knew where adebayo was getting at.
"it's pretty nice here, that's all i'm saying," she raised her hands, feigning innocence.
"aren't you supposed to go back to gotham after all that?" she retorted with a pointed look.
"i'm starting to enjoy it," adebayo shrugged.
"well, i don't," she was clearly lying. [your name] pretended not to like chris's stupid remarks, yet gentle praises, when holding an actual conversation with. john was such a relaxed and actually nice guy, unlike how she stereotyped him due to all the content reddit fed her. harcourt was starting to grow on her; she could always count on that mountain of a woman. murn was her boss, nothing to say really, but he seemed reliable despite chris's accusation. adrian... well, adrian was fucking weird.
he texted her every day, he was interested in what she had to say, he had conversations (as strange as they were), he was protective of her (and the whole team, however, he appeared more ruthless the moment she found herself in danger), he seemed close to his mother without being a creepy mama's boy, and he was chalant unlike her ex-boyfriend.
she found herself continuously comparing both men, an unhealthy behaviour which made her spiral every time she was around adrian.
his smile.
his hair.
his fighting style.
his laugh.
his genuine interest in her. surely platonic since everyone close to him was his 'best friend' with different ranks.
"i don't like adrian, and once i find another place to stay, i'm gone," she concluded before getting up and heading to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
meanwhile in the middle of nowhere, in the vigilante mobile.
"that went well," adrian congratulated himself, putting his phone in one of his pockets. chris stared at adrian floored, as the latter looked through the windshield towards the dense forest.
"you're a lost cause," chris sighed. the older man had been coaching adrian how to talk to women since [your name] had arrived in evergreen city.
"what? i did everything you told me," adrian objected, frowning.
"i told you to compliment her and ask her out on a date," chris shut his eyes, enunciating the clear instructions he had given his sidekick.
"duh, and that's exactly what i did," adrian replied, highlighting the obviousness of his actions.
"you told her she wasn't as cool as us," chris began to enumerate.
"it's about duos, not her as an individual," vigilante clarified himself.
"you talked about your sex life," chris retorted.
"so what? that's the truth," adrian countered.
"you don't say that to someone you're trying to go out with," chris explained.
"why are there so many rules to dating?" adrian sighed in frustration.
"and the worst of the worst: you asked her about her ex, dude!" chris yelled, eyes wide open in utter shock.
"i need to know her current feelings. how am i supposed to assess the situation if that guy is still in the picture?" adrian looked down at his knees, playing with his fingers nervously.
[your name] had not opened up about her past relationship, just explained she had moved to evergreen city because she had nowhere to go after her most recent breakup. adrian had tried to ask questions, but she would barely answer, tell him she did not want to talk about it or blankly stare at him in astonishment at his lack of understanding of social cues.
"do, hum... do you think she hates me?" adrian hesitantly asked. chris shoulders relaxed as his eyes softened, guilty for lashing out at his already kicked down friend.
"man, she doesn't," chris comforted him.
"how do you know?" adrian scoffed, remaining in the same hunched position.
"i just know she doesn't hate you. you guys just met, and honestly, with how she met us, she seems to like you just fine," chris assured with a hint of humour.
when peacemaker made sure vigilante felt better, promising him a night of slaughter against criminals, the younger man's smile came right back and drove into the night to protect the citizens of evergreen city.
project butterfly was a success.
the 11th street kid had just saved the world from tyrannical bugs controlled human bodies by choking them and drilling holes in the skull, eventually taking over the brain. keeya had finally moved back into the hotel room, pleased to go back to some normalcy surrounded by her family.
the team had decided to celebrate at a bar, drinking a few beers and cocktails, just relishing in the ounce of peace before the consequences of adebayo's press conference bit them back in the ass.
"to the 11th street kid!" chris shouted, raising his beer as the group mimicked his gesture, repeating after him and cheering.
jokes, personal conversations and future plans flowed within the group. six people who would have never met if it had not been for the literal apocalypse. none of them would have a career by the end of the week at a.r.g.u.s. or in any secret intelligence organisation, but they had each other at least.
john and adebayo were the most intoxicated, slurring their words and dancing out of tempo to music they would have never listened to in another context. harcourt was surprisingly enjoying her chat with chris. she was not glaring at him, rolling her eyes or sighing; she even smiled. her tough exterior was softening. adrian was participating in all activities: showing his best dancing moves, interrupting conversations to give some insights. although he was not drinking because he was driving as the responsible young man he was, he was having the time of his life.
unlike [your name].
phone buzzing in her pocket, a reminder of the reality she was facing.
her ex.
ten missed calls.
three voice messages.
too many texts that the phone had to display a plus sign next to the notifications.
"you're not listening to me, manatee," a masculine voice called out from her right. only one person called her by this stupid nickname.
adrian, sitting on the stool beside her, stared at her expectantly. he had been going on a rant about another animal he knew nothing about. predictable.
"i'm sorry, vij. i need some air," [your name] excused herself, abruptly standing up from the chair as she put her phone back in her pocket.
"i'm coming with you, then," adrian offered, already on his feet, towering over her.
"i need time alone, please," she clarified.
"it can be dangerous out there, i'm coming," he insisted.
"you can't come with me," she flat-out stated as adrian groaned at her answer in the same second. "you have to stay here to make sure john doesn't slip and break his neck against a table. chris is too deep in his conversation with em, and adebayo is drunk as fuck. you're the only one there for him," she declared as the young man's eyes widened in realisation.
"oh my god, you're so right. i'm an awful person, i almost left my friend to die!" he exaggerated, horrified, before sitting down, eyes stuck on economos dancing to 'california girls' by katy perry.
the cold air hit her face as she opened the messages her ex-boyfriend had sent her.
predictable too.
the messages ranged from begging her to come back and threatening to burn all her clothes if she did not. he promised that he would behave himself from now on and that he regretted ever dating her. he claimed she was the only one to ever truly understand him on a deeper level and that she had been holding him back from his full potential over the course of the entire relationship. he had even sent her some pictures of the girls he was talking to on dating apps, undoubtedly without their consent. [your name] knew to put things into perspective; her ex wanted to make her jealous, and miserably failed. she felt sorry for the women who crossed his path, even if it was small talk on apps where he hardly contributed to the exchange.
the voice messages were not better. from yelling to sobbing in a matter of a couple of minutes on repeat. he sounded like a broken record.
the alcohol gave her the boldness to go through all the messages, but not the clarity to not call him.
the phone barely rang before his voice resonated on the other end of the line.
"baby—"
"shut the fuck up," she greeted him.
"why are you doing this to me?" he sniffled.
"you can't be fucking serious, are you?" she scoffed.
"we make mistakes, we're humans. you're torturing me!" he screeched as he forced sobs out.
"if you don't stop contacting me, i'll block you," she declared as the manchild screamed in disapproval.
"you can't do that to me! i love you!" he confessed as a last resort.
"you cheated on me, asshole," she chuckled in disbelief.
"oh my god, bro," he whined the same way men on social media who get caught cheating did. "i didn't do it to hurt you, i have needs!" he justified his actions on pseudo-science.
"i don't care—" she began to say before her phone was snatched from her hands.
adrian had deliberately disregarded her request and followed her outside the bar. how much had he heard from the phone call?
"hey, man! how's it going?" he genuinely greeted cheerfully. [your name] could hear her ex get increasingly angry. "'who is this?'. oh, no one. just the guy who is now fucking your ex so good she can't remember the soggy and reeking noodle between your legs, you can barely get up without imagining the whole neighbourhood fucking your mom waiting for their turn in the hallway." he turned serious all of a sudden, pushing away [your name] as she extended her arms to grab her phone. adrian just faced away from her, his height allowing him to converse casually.
he had heard it all.
"yeah, she begs for more while you keep jerking off to pictures of her you found on facebook because you never bothered taking some of her," her friend continued, shading the lack of effort he made in the relationship. startled by adrian's words, the young woman stopped fighting for her phone.
"maybe if you had treated her the way she deserved, she would have stayed with you. but no, you had to cheat on her because you couldn't make her come, so your fragile ego was hit. you're lucky you're not married, and cheating isn't a crime in washington because i would have cut your head off," he stated, concluding with the usual threat of death.
"if you contact her again, i'll kill you since it could count as harassment. goodnight!" he hung up. "here you go, no need to thank me." he handed her phone back.
did this actually happen?
she was stunned.
at a loss for words.
"what the fuck was that?!" she shouted in shock.
"damn, you could show some gratitude," he grimaced, scoffing at how ungrateful she behaved.
"i had it handled," she asserted, clenching her fist.
"you weren't handling anything. you were arguing with him for no reason," he argued, clueless.
"you ruined everything, adrian..." she grumbled.
"what the hell? i did you a favour," he gestured to himself, offended she was not thanking him.
"you didn't do shit," she yelled, exasperated, "my things are still at his apartment. i'm never getting anything back because of you..." she pointed out.
"i'll go there with you," he offered. although he would still find a way to follow her without her permission, "he can't keep your socks hostage. that'd be stealing," he informed, as if she cared.
"you've done enough, get back inside," she ordered, absolutely done with adrian.
[your name] turned away from adrian, unlocking her phone and checking the new colourful text her ex had sent her. she hesitated for a second and ultimately ruled against it.
the night was ruined either way.
she sat down on the pavement, elbows resting on her knees as she grabbed her head in her hands. Her phone kept buzzing; she was certain this time the messages were only insults after what adrian pulled. she tried to ignore it until she could no longer do so; she threw her phone to the ground, growling in frustration. the phone landed right behind adrian, who had ignored her wishes once again.
"i really don't understand you," he admitted, awkwardly standing where she had left him under the street lamp light.
"i want to be alone. what word don't you understand in that sentence?" [your name] glared at him.
"you're so great at everything. you're kind, cool and smart, yet you date that?" he raised his eyebrows, gesturing to the phone on the ground. "you have horrible taste, woman," he affirmed, disgusted.
"oh because you know better than me, surely." she stood up, taking a few steps forward in his direction, almost intimidatingly.
"i certainly do," he nodded, confident, joining his hands together.
"oh, do enlighten me then, sherlock!" she mocked, her hands on her hips.
"you could have me!" adrian blurted out.
mocking her was unacceptable at the moment; even adrian had to be aware of it. the contrast between the festivities and laughter in the bar with his revelation drowned her in silence. she tried to swim to the surface in vain; her words were caught in her throat, unable to express her thoughts.
she stared at him, squinting her eyes as her lips trembled from incomprehension. her brain had short-circuited.
"i'm so much better than him," he claimed, walking around in circles. "i check out all the green flags i read on google." he raised his index finger, before he halted in his tracks and began to count on his fingers, listing all his qualities. "i love animals, obviously. i can protect you from anything and anyone, but i don't get jealous since i don't get people like you guys do." with each sentence, he became more agitated, which prompted [your name] to call out his name in an attempt to calm him down.
"so i'm protective but not too much, like it's cute, right. i'm reliable; my favourite colour has been teal my whole life without a change. but you already know that." she did not know that.
"not that it's important, but i had enough sexual encounters to know what i'm doing." unfortunately, she knew that, "and please you the way you'll like if you're into that outside of bonding. although no matter what, sex bonds souls," he added, as tried to stop him by slowly placing her hand on his arm not to startle him. adrian moved out of the way, resuming his monologue.
"i love hearing you talk. you smell good. you laugh at my jokes and even at not my jokes," adrian enumerated. despite her initial impression of him, his demeanour was endearing. "also you're so hot with a gun," he complimented, smirking, although you could argue it was not a compliment.
unable to cease his frenetic rant, [your name] shouted his name, finally standing under the light with him.
"it kills me seeing you upset over that— that—ugh, that loser." his shoulders slumped.
"did you do that because you like me?" she asked, as stupid as it sounded. how could she trust him with her distorted judgment? however, it did bring her to evergreen city, where she met incredible people and reunited with her cousin.
"'love' you, actually," he corrected. "but overall, yes," he pursed his lips, nodding.
"and you couldn't act like a normal person and ask me out?" she frowned.
"deep down, i thought you hated me..." he admitted, as her shoulder faltered. had she been this dismissive of adrian? "and standing up for the person you love is proof of devotion. that's how it works in those netflix shows," he pointed out where he learnt his courting techniques.
"don't take advice from them," she shook her head, also shaking her hands to go back to the conversation that actually mattered.
"i thought you only wanted to fuck me?" she admitted.
"no way! how did i make you think that?" he laughed, blown away by her claim.
"all the threesomes and more with chris?" she stated the obvious.
"only because it makes our friendship stronger," he explained, shrugging. [your name] disapproved as he insisted this type of behaviour was normal for most people.
"i agree with 'sex is a way to bond', but not with my friends, adrian."
"you're missing out, then." her opinion was visibly not shared by the man. "but again, if i'm with you, that wouldn't be a problem because all i want is you." he assured, his voice slightly higher.
"i don't know adrian..." she mumbled, rubbing her forehead.
"all i'm asking for is one date," that was the problem. what was adrian's vision of a date? it could range from getting dinner somewhere cheap but tasty to walking around the woods at night to go owl-sighting.
ultimately, his concept of a date was not a major issue, her personal life was. between her uncertain feelings for adrian and her conflicted relationship with her ex prevented her from showing vulnerability. she needed to get her life back together: find a job, and a therapist to set boundaries in a relationship, as well as process everything she had gone through in the past year (cheating and butterflies).
"only one single date. you have nothing to lose because you're gonna move away anyway," he pleaded.
well...
"i decided to stay," she revealed nonchalantly, as adrian's face slowly lit up.
"are you fucking serious? we're gonna have so much fun!" his smile illuminated his face.
when [your name] stayed with her ex, she had no friends and had barely any contact with her family. her ex was the centre of her life: she had no ambition, no goals and no excitement for life. she could complain all she wanted about the way she was welcomed in evergreen city, but she had never felt more alive than in this exact moment. she had family and friends; something to look forward to. as cliché as it was, leaving her city overnight on a whim without any money to break into her cousin's hotel room was the best decision she had taken in a while.
"okay," she flatly said.
"'okay' what?" adrian was confused, a sharp tilt of the head.
"i'm okay to go on a date with you," she clarified as pure euphoria erupted from adrian.
"you're not lying?" he asked, barely holding his excitement in.
"no, i want to," she assured, smiling at how cute his reaction was. "i just need time, no rushing into a relationship."
already setting some boundaries.
she learned her lesson.
adrian wrapped her arms around her, her own arms stuck along her body as he lifted her up in a hug. affection or any form of touch from adrian was out of character; as expected, he still could not do it properly, even when it was a sincere gesture.
"you're not gonna regret it," he promised as [your name]'s nerves relaxed. having a person as loyal and devoted had its pros and cons. little did she know, she could use his support more than she cared to admit.

“Where the fuck is Vex?!” Kendra screams, before slamming the creature’s eye with her mace.
“Didn’t she get the signal?” Guy says, floating around and trying to restrain it with his giant oven mitts.
When Michael finally finds your tracker location on his computer, he lets out an exhale. “She’s still in her damn apartment.”
Meanwhile, Adrian Chase could not have imagined in a million years that he would be in the current position he is in right now.
He got flew in via private jet all the way from Evergreen, and not even a full twenty-four hours has passed since he landed in Metropolis.
Now, he is laying in the biggest bed he has ever seen, in a clean and snazzy apartment owned by one of the nation’s beloved superheroes, who happens to be his darling girlfriend.
You will never forget the first time you laid eyes on him, fully clad in his damaged teal-accented suit and face hidden behind his mask. The Justice Gang had been called to help out in a black-ops operation taking place in Evergreen, and you were the only one available to actually arrive in time.
The moment he saw you use your powers, forcefully pulling out multiple butterflies from inside enemies’ heads at the same time, it was as if their exploding brains were fireworks surrounding you. Adrian never got so hard so quickly in his life before.
He swore the chorus of Foreigner’s I Want To Know What Love Is started playing as you turned around to face him in slow motion.
People online who saw you in real life were not kidding when they said you were the hottest superhero alive. That you immediately stun every person that lays their eyes on you.
"Wow. I'm going to have to amend my personal Code of Conduct, because I think it should be illegal for anyone to look that smoking hot while causing that much cerebral trauma.” Was the first thing he said to you.
Your eyes narrowed at him in confusion, but you were somewhat amused.
He continued on, “Well technically, their brains were already messed up by those alien-bug things… But still, that was definitely at least a top-five favorite noise for me. You made it sound like… a murder-symphony. And I like murder-symphonies.”
You knew you were doomed after that.
After the events of Project Butterfly, you somehow kept in touch with Peacemaker, mostly so you could put in a good word for him if he ever wanted to join the Justice Gang. Then later on with Vigilante, after his endless pestering with Chris, trying to get your number from him.
You initially warned him to call only for emergencies. But of course, he didn’t listen. Eventually, you calling him Vigilante turned into calling him Adrian. His ten-minute calls during his breaks turned into late-night calls that he fell asleep to.
It had been months since you last visited him in Evergreen, one of the very few times you were allowed time off. Way too long for you. So, you said ‘fuck it’ and made use of LordTech’s resources to fly him to you in Metropolis.
So, here you are now. Eyes watering and lips wet with your own drool mixed with his pre-cum as your mouth takes in the full length of him.
Beads of sweat fell down Adrian’s forehead, his hand coming up to fix his crooked eyeglasses, while his free hand tangled itself in your hair.
His head throbbed and his body felt hot at the sight of you. Fully nude, on all fours, your hands gripping at his thighs as your tongue swirled around his cock.
Adrian let out a whimper as he threw his head back on the headboard, “Fuck… fuck, babe. You’re like…a sex goddess. Are you sure you’re not actually a goddess and you never knew from birth? Or are gods even born? Y’think you can ask Wonder Woman when you see her?”
You hummed, sending light vibrations throughout his cock. “W-W-Wait! I swear I’m gonna cum if you keep doing that, babe…” His hand reached out to cup your chin, “I don’t wanna cum just yet,” He pouted at you, slowly sitting up.
You looked up at him through your eyelashes, your cheeks hollowing as you sucked along his full length until his tip escaped your mouth with a wet pop.
Your hands then slowly stroke him as you press your cheek against his thigh, admiring his stupid grinning face, as if you didn’t just gag on his dick literally seconds ago. “Have I ever told you that your mouth is currently my top two favorite things I like to put my dick in? Number one of course, is your pussy. Nothing will ever top that.”
Pressing a soft kiss on his glistening tip, you let out a soft sigh, “Yes, Adrian. You told me that last time.”
You crawled up his legs slowly, letting out a soft moan when his tip brushed against your clit momentarily. Adrian watches you, “Just wanted to let you know again,” smiling softly as you fully straddle him.
“I just really really really missed you a lot,” He says, as his hands traveled up against your sides to your breasts, his thumbs brushing softly against your nipples.
Letting out a small giggle, you cupped his cheek, “I really missed you too, Adrian.”
Before you could lean in to kiss your psychopathic dork of a boyfriend, your LordTech issued signal device beeped at your bedside table.
Adrian looked over at it, “So… does that mean you gotta go or… wait! I could help you guys!” He grinned, “I totes brought my suit just in case.”
“Wait, you brought your suit–” You mentally facepalmed, stopping yourself before you reached a hand out towards the device, using your energy to mute it.
“Are you gonna go do your superhero stuff now, babe?” Adrian asked, a slight hint of sadness seeping through his tone.
Your head turned towards him, “Fuck no.” Your lips crashed against his, your tongue entering his mouth and tangling with his.
Once you pull away, a string of saliva connects both your mouths, “They can handle it without me.” You panted, “Right now, I wanna give my boyfriend top one treatment.”
Adrian shuddered at your raspy tone, “I know I’m already hard, but I just got even harder at that. If that’s even possible. You’re so fucking hot.”
Grabbing the back of your head, he pulls you into a sloppy kiss. As much as he liked to hide it, Adrian had never been so sexually frustrated in his life. He absolutely hated being in a semi long-distance relationship with you.
Fighting crime side by side as Vigilante and Vex would be so fucking fun. Most especially, he just wanted to take you out on arcade or mini-golf dates and fuck you in his car after. Maybe also eat lots of Chinese takeout while playing Super Smash Bros. and then fuck in his bed after. Lots of cuddling too until the next late afternoon, then cooking blueberry pancakes for dinner.
But, he knew the life you had and he respected it. He just felt so lucky to even be a part of it.
Pulling away, both your hands cupped his cheeks, pulling his face to look up at you.
“What’s going on in that pretty little head of yours?” You kiss his nose, hands brushing softly against his curls.
Adrian breathed in slowly, blinking up at you. “You. Just you. I just need you so fucking bad.”
You smiled softly, your hand reaching down to his length, “You already have me, baby.” You dragged his tip along your cunt, making it slick with your wetness that’s already been dripping down your thighs.
Sinking your hips down to slowly take him in, you gasped out, “I’m all yours, Adrian. No one else could have me like you do.”
Adrian watched as his cock disappeared into your folds, his fingers digging into the skin of your hips. He grits his teeth, the lenses of his eyeglasses fogging up with his hot breaths. “Fuck… you’re so perfect… absolutely perfect.”
Your hands grip both his shoulders, walls clenching around him as he finally bottoms out, feeling his balls against your ass. Not even moving an inch yet, your pussy clenched harder around him, already feeling yourself gush out and drip onto his thighs.
“God damn…” Realization hits him and you both, “Did you just cum already? I haven’t even moved yet, babe…”
Your face flushes with embarrassment, hiding your face in his shoulder. Adrian pulls you away from him, now face-to-face again with him. His voice was lower and serious, “I want you to fucking do that again. I’ll do anything to make you gush on my dick like that again.”
From under you, he swiftly pulls out of your dripping folds, before thrusting back up into you again. You let out a cry, staggering forward to wrap your arms around his neck. “Fuck, Adrian!”
He keeps jerking his hips up, the sounds of wet smacking filling the room. He places wet kisses on your shoulder, your neck, any inch of skin he can reach as he bounces you on his cock.
“You’re so tight around me, babe…” He rasps into your ear, his hot breath tickling your skin. “I could die right now. I’ll die happily with your pussy choking my dick. Fuck, ruin me all you want. Use my dick. It’s yoursit’syoursit’syoursit’syours.”
You move your hips in rhythm with his, feeling every vein and inch of his cock kissing your insides, “Fuck, I love you so much,” He gasps out.
“I love you too, Ad–” Beep. beep. beep. Goddamn the fucking signal phone thing. You thought you had muted it. You let out a frustrated growl. Pushing your hand out in its direction, it shot up into the air before your force threw it out the bedroom window, breaking the glass.
You pulled away from his shoulder, facing him again, roughly pulling him into a kiss while still bouncing on his cock. You pulled away, but your noses still touch, “I love you so fucking much, Adrian. You’re all I need. I’m all yours.”
"Fuck, I love you a gazillion times more. You're even hotter when you're angry and you use your powers. You're gonna make me cum."
He looked up at you through his dewy curls, feeling his core tighten up. “You’re so beautiful. My baby. My love. My future wi–” He gasps, quickly feeling himself becoming undone, but his thrusts do not stop.
The head of his cock repeatedly kissed your cervix, your hips jerking up and down along with his. “Please cum for me, Adrian. Fill me up. I want it all inside me.”
His arms wrapped around you tightly, pulling your sweaty bodies together “IloveyouIloveyouIloveyouIloveyou.” He babbled into your neck, hips jerking up into you faster, feeling both your ends fast approaching.
With one last deep thrust, the coil in your core finally snapped, feeling yourself pulsate and gush around his cock that finally fills you up. Both your releases mixed inside of you, leaking onto his thighs and the sheets.
Strong arms still wrapped around you, his hips twitch up against you, your pussy milking out every last drop of him.
You both stay like that for what seems like eternity, before you slowly pull his face away to get a better look at him. His eyes softly fluttered open, watery and glazed behind crooked eyeglasses as you fixed them, then brushed his sweaty curls away from his forehead.
A small grin inched its way to his face, before you pressed a soft kiss to his lips, “There’s my pretty baby,” You smiled softly at him.
He continued to grin up at you, eyes slowly closing, then fluttering open again. “I…” He panted.
“Shhh… I’ll get you some water, sweetie,” You tried to get up, but his arms kept you in place, wrapping themselves around you again as he rested his chin on your shoulder.
“No. Stay.” He whispered out, his cock still softening inside you.
You let out a soft sigh, before hugging him back.
“Okay. I’m not going anywhere,” You pressed a kiss to his shoulder.
