Tom is a spider, like most spiders, he lived in solitude away from the other bugs. Naturally, a majority of bugs were afraid of him. Being venomous didn't help matters all that much either...Regardless, Tom was happy in the safety and solitude of his web.
That was until the mean caretaker of the orphanage he made his web in found it, and destroyed it. Thankfully, he was spared from this fate by one of the girls living there; Dusk. Tom escaped into the outdoors, and ended up coming into contact with the magic powder spilled by the same girl.
Even in his new state, Tom never forgot the act of kindness Dusk gave him, such acts were rare for him to receive. As such, he is the most protective of the girl once they re-meet in the giant peach.
