Barista!luke for anarchyaustralia and wherekatewritesthings ! you’ve been working at the local coffee shop for about a year now and if you’re being quite honest, you know the entire place with your eyes shut. the day your manager told you they had hired someone new you were a bit weary. the newbies were almost always people who didn’t particularly care about what they were doing and messed up orders right and left. so when some tall (maybe a little beautiful but he didn’t have to know you thought that), blonde boy showed up you didn’t bother taking it easy on him. “look, all you have to do is spend the me u hour memorizing this book and learning the drinks. then you’ll start your first real shift. Jeremy (your boss) showed you how to use all the machines right?” the boy just nodded his head and accepted the book. you placed an apron on top of it and looked him over once more. “are you going to tell me your name?” “oh right, I’m luke” “alright Luke,” you took out a black name pin and wrote his name on it on silver sharpie “there’s your name tag, now you’re tall and we can’t have you tripping all over the place so keep your shoelaces tied okay?” he just nodded his head again and walked over to an empty table in the back and got to reading. when it was time for his shift to start, you kept an eye on him, taking orders, writing them on the cup, and handing them to him. of course there were other baristas on duty, but you wanted to see how he would fare. you were surprised to admit that he was actually doing quite well. “shit.” you turned away from the register to find Luke looking very frustrated. “excuse me a moment” you say to the customer before walking towards him “what’s up?” “i messed up the order.” “then just start it again.” “I can’t remember how to do it.” your first instinct was to be annoyed but when you saw how upset he seemed you called another barista over and put him on register duty and turned back to Luke. “look, just this once I’ll help you, but next time just look in the book again.” “thank you so much I swear I thought I had it all down.” “it’s fine, let’s just get this finished so we can get it to the customer.” at the end of the day you grabbed your bag from the back and threw your apron in it. you saw Luke sweeping the floor and went over to him. “you did pretty well for a first timer, I’m impressed.” “thanks,” he blushed “I messed up an order though.” “I messed up 3 my first day, you’ll get used to it. and here,” you hand him a stack of battered flash cards secured with a rubber band “these are how I learned all the drinks. just get them back to me okay?” “oh wow, thanks can I get them back to you next week?” “sure.” you headed for the door, when and hand reached out and grabbed your arm “would you maybe want to grab a drink sometime?” you smiled up at the tall blonde boy, noticing for the first time how nice a shade of blue his eyes were and nodded “just no coffee okay?”
