favorite thing about them

oh gosh i’m gonna gush here… i think maybe my favorite favorite thing about him is his big love for his friends and family and his willingness to sacrifice so much of himself for them. even though he’s barely in the story, when he is there we see him helping others just because he wants to. he even breaks the law for kisuke and the visoreds, knowing full well the potential consequences of imprisonment or perhaps even death. tessai’s self-sacrifice, loyalty, humbleness, etc. is amazing and i love that about him.

least favorite thing about them

kubo has this Really Weird Thing that he thinks is funny (but it’s not at all) about tessai doling out physical punishment to jinta and jinta being afraid of what tessai will do to him when he misbehaves. in this day and age, looking back on it, it’s pretty uncomfortable?? doing away with that crap but keeping tessai as a strict but well-meaning parent in other ways is much better.

i honest-to-god have not seen tessai shipped with any other person besides kisuke, but that’s good because then i don’t have to list nOTPs.

random headcanon

tessai is actually considered attractive by a lot of adults who wander into the shop, humans and shinigami alike. middle aged men and women in particular think he’s dreamy, what with his muscles and hardworking nature and gentlemanliness and all. however, tessai is hilariously oblivious to any sort of attraction people have for him. customers will attempt to flirt and tessai won’t get it or will mostly keep to himself, and kisuke and yoruichi will tease him about it afterwards.

unpopular opinion

he’s NOT a butler/nanny and should never ever be treated as such. he’s a co-owner of the urahara shop. he and kisuke are fathers and take care of the kids together, tessai isn’t the only one able to do that. tessai is completely equal to kisuke. if you don’t want to admit they’re married gay men, at the very least they’re childhood friends who run a business and raise kids together. there’s no reason at all for kisuke to be treating tessai as a stooge and they should never be characterized that way by anybody no matter what canon says, especially because tessai is a darker-skinned man so it’d be kinda yikes to have him in that sort of role.
