If there was anything Malcolm despised, it was being the center of attention. For the better half of the day, the chief ordered him to stand atop the rig and flag people over to get showered by the hose in the humid, Georgia heat. After a few hours, he was able to get down and start showing gathering townsfolk around the firetruck, filled with all its gadgets and gizmos. He wasn’t the best at explaining this but one thing he was certainly good at was showing kids how to work the siren. Malcolm sat in the cab with a child in his lap, laughing as the two went back and forth childishly laying on the squealing siren. As the child scurried back to her parents, the firefighter turned when he saw someone out of the corner of his eye. “Do you wanna, uh, play with the siren too?” He asked bashfully upon realizing how much fun he was just having. “I mean, kids usually have a lot of fun with it but you can take a wack at it if you want.”
