Sissy Hankshaw’s Thumbs, and this weekend was great.

I’m reading Tom Robbins’ Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. 

I am inspired by Sissy Hankshaw, she’s got the best damn attitude of any character I’ve ever read about. 

Hitch hiking her burning passion, her destiny. Her only desire is to be on the road...flagging down any car with her abnormally large thumbs and her winning smile, and going wherever she wants. 

She’s got these thumbs that are the size of...well they seem to fluctuate, depending on how they’re described in any given passage...but I imagine they’re the size of...wine bottles, shaped like banana balloons, perfectly shiny with no finger prints or anything. 

She touts her thumbs like trophies, cares for them like newborn babies...she’s proud of them, she loves them, while everyone who encounters them thinks they’re absurd and profane and tries to convince her that she is disabled.

She laughs it off, reasons with them gently, cooing that they simply don’t understand. She doesn’t blame anyone. She smiles to herself, and her thumbs smile back at her...they are her allies, and they are her freedom. 

If I can feel as free as Sissy on the road, every day...that’d be great.

I had a great weekend out on the town here in Austin. 

I went to Swandive, down on Red River. I met the awesome girlies, who run a progressive nudie mag called Peachfuzz.

They organized the line-up of all lady-fronted bands, for the launch of their newest issue. Everyone was amazing.
