Summary: When Garnet ends up unfusing during battle, old feelings resurface within Pearl.
It was a bright afternoon. As humans might say, Pearl's head was in the clouds. Amethyst was off doing something childish with Steven, leaving Pearl and Garnet with some appreciated privacy. They hadn't made any plans for the day, instead taking things easy and lounging on the beach shore. The ocean waves, an everyday sight, looked especially lovely today.

Garnet's hand found hers, and Pearl shifted her gaze from the water to look at her, feeling the familiar swell of love in her chest. It had taken them years to get here, but their relationship was built on an unshakeable foundation of trust. Pearl felt that their relationship was as strong as a lifetime. As Garnet's three eyes met hers, Pearl felt truly seen.
Suddenly, the sky darkened. A colossal shadow loomed overhead as a gigantic corrupted gem crashed down in front of them. Pearl leapt in front of Garnet, spear drawn. The monstrous gem was too quick. In an instant, it slammed Pearl aside, then seized Garnet in its gnarled claws.
Garnet struggled against its grip. Her form flickered, wavered, then burst apart in a flash of light. Ruby and Sapphire tumbled to the ground where Garnet had stood.
"Garnet!" Pearl cried, scrambling over to help Ruby up.
Ruby's eyes blazed with fury. "That thing's gonna pay for this!" She charged at the corrupted gem with reckless abandon.
Sapphire glided after her, ice crystals materializing in her hands. "Ruby, wait!"
Pearl watched them, her heart sinking. Seeing Ruby and Sapphire apart was jarring now that she was with Garnet. She could feel a tightness in her gem that she hadn't felt since--
She loved Garnet--them, but could she ever truly be part of this? Did she even belong with them? Doubt gnawed at Pearl's mind as she moved to rejoin the fray. She had to stay focused. Her feelings would have to wait.
Pearl pushed her doubts aside and leapt into battle. She slashed at the corrupted gem with her spear while Ruby rained down a barrage of fiery punches. Ice crystals shot through the air as Sapphire assisted with her icy projectiles.
The corrupted gem thrashed and swiped at them, but it was outmatched by the synchronicity of their movements. With one final blow, the monstrous gem dissipated in a puff of smoke, leaving only a small gemstone behind.
"We did it!" Ruby cheered, pumping her fist in the air. Overcome with excitement, she pulled Sapphire into a tight hug. Then she grabbed Pearl's hand and yanked her into the embrace before Pearl could react.
Pearl stood rigid, arms pinned at her sides. Ruby and Sapphire gazed adoringly at each other, their special connection apparent. Pearl felt like an outsider intruding on their intimate moment.
Old memories flooded Pearl's mind. She saw flashes of Rose and Greg together, their unique closeness that had left her feeling excluded and inadequate. Pearl tensed, willing the painful images away.
This was different, she told herself. She cared for Ruby and Sapphire. But the familiar ache still lingered, bringing with it those old fears of not measuring up. Pearl gently extricated herself from the hug, feigning nonchalance.
"We should get back to the temple," she said evenly. "More corrupted gems could show up at any time."
Ruby and Sapphire shared a look. "Yeah, you're probably right," said Ruby. She squeezed Sapphire's hand, smiling. "But it's nice getting to spend some time together like this!"
Sapphire nodded, leaning into Ruby affectionately. Pearl averted her gaze, pushing down the unease rising within her. Without another word, the three Crystal Gems set off for home.
Pearl walked a few paces behind the pair, observing their intimate interactions. They laughed and whispered to each other, lost in their own little world.
Pearl wrapped her arms around herself. She knew their love was deep and unwavering. But now, seeing their connection so openly, she couldn't ignore the gnawing feelings of doubt and insecurity.
"You two should fuse back into Garnet," Pearl said, trying to sound nonchalant. "It's safer in case another corrupted gem shows up."
Ruby and Sapphire stopped and turned. "What's the rush?" asked Ruby. "We just took down that monster together. I think we'll be fine for a little while longer."
Sapphire gave Pearl a searching look. "Is something wrong, Pearl?"
"No, of course not!" Pearl gave a nervous laugh, waving her hands in front of her. "I just think we shouldn't stay separated too long, that's all."
"If you say so," Ruby said, clearly unconvinced. She slid her arm around Sapphire's waist. "But I'm kinda liking this. It's nice being able to look at you, Sapphire."
Sapphire smiled, a light blue blush coloring her cheeks. Pearl looked away, discomfort written across her face. She quickened her pace, eager to get back to the temple and the comfort of solitude.
Pearl walked briskly, keeping her gaze fixed ahead as the pair trailed leisurely behind her. She could hear their playful banter and occasional laughter, each sound like a needle pricking her gem.
Why did their closeness bother her so much? She had spent countless years with Ruby and Sapphire, both fused as Garnet and occasionally unfused. But now, things felt different.
Ever since she and Garnet had become romantically involved, the dynamics between the three of them had shifted. Pearl always respected Ruby and Sapphire's relationship within Garnet. But now seeing that connection openly, without the fusion...it triggered memories and old wounds.
As the temple came into view, Pearl quickened her pace even more. She needed time alone to process her conflicted feelings. If she was going to move forward with this new arrangement, she would have to let go of her past.
Ruby and Sapphire entered behind her, their fingers intertwined. Pearl busied herself tidying the already spotless kitchen area, avoiding eye contact.
"Is everything okay, Pearl?" Sapphire's voice was gentle but knowing.
"Of course!" Pearl replied with forced cheeriness. "Just thought I'd get a head start on some chores."
Ruby frowned, unconvinced. But she simply squeezed Sapphire's hand and said, "If you say so. We'll be in the living room if you need us."
Pearl nodded mutely. As they turned their backs on her, she slumped against the counter, heaving a deep sigh. She cared for them both, deeply. But navigating the complexities of their relationship would not be easy.
Pearl longed to retreat to her room where she could take time to process her feelings in solitude, but she could not think of a convincing excuse to do so. She had been so excited to spend the day with Garnet that morning. Taking a moment to compose herself, she followed Ruby and Sapphire to the living area. She found them curled up together on the couch, Sapphire's head resting on Ruby's shoulder. Pearl hovered awkwardly near the coffee table.
"Oh, Pearl! Come sit with us," Ruby said brightly, patting the cushion next to her.
Pearl perched on the edge of the couch. An uncomfortable silence descended.
"So..." Ruby began, "I know this is kinda new for all of us."
Pearl nodded, staring fixedly at the floor.
"But we're all in this together!" Ruby continued earnestly. "If you're with Garnet, you're with both of us. We're a package deal."
Pearl flinched almost imperceptibly. Ruby's words, though well-intentioned, only accentuated her nagging feelings of inadequacy.
"Of course," she replied thinly. "Garnet has always been both of you."
Sapphire gave Ruby's hand a gentle squeeze, wordlessly cautioning restraint. Sensing the growing tension, she changed the subject, her tranquil voice smoothing the prickliness between them.
The conversation moved to lighter topics, but Pearl's discomfort lingered. This new dynamic would require some adjustment from all of them. For now, she took comfort in the fact that their bond remained strong, however complicated their relationship had become.
The conversation lulled. Pearl's gaze drifted once more to Ruby and Sapphire's intertwined hands. A familiar ache bloomed in her chest.
Sapphire's eye settled on Pearl, her expression unreadable. "Pearl," she began gently. "Is everything all right?"
Pearl jerked her head up. "Of course! Why wouldn't it be?" Her bright tone rang false.
Sapphire waited patiently.
Pearl dropped her gaze again. "I've always accepted your relationship as Garnet," Pearl continued. "It's just...strange seeing you two like this," she admitted.
"How so?" Sapphire prodded.
Pearl wrapped her arms around herself. "It makes me think of...the past. Of Rose, and..." She trailed off, throat tightening.
Understanding dawned on Sapphire. "You're afraid we'll make you feel like an outsider. Like you did with Greg."
Pearl flinched at the truth being laid bare. "I-I know it isn't rational," she stammered. "But I can't seem to stop those old feelings from resurfacing. The fear that I'll be left behind."
"Hey." Ruby's voice was gentle. She took Pearl's hand. "What you went through back then was real hard. But we aren't Rose and Greg."
"I know," Pearl whispered.
Sapphire's eye gave her an inquisitive look. "Do you feel for us what you did for Rose?"
Pearl sputtered nervously. "W-what? Of course not!"
Sapphire took her hands, smiling. "Our relationship is not the same as what you had before. We are all equals."
"We'll never leave you behind. We're family," Ruby said firmly. "All of us. And we've got your back, no matter what."
The ache in Pearl's gem loosened.
Sapphire rested a delicate hand on her shoulder.
"What Ruby and I have is special," she said softly. "But so is what the three of us share as Garnet. There's room for both."
Warmth blossomed in Pearl's chest. She clasped their hands, tears pricking her eyes. "I don't want my past hurts to taint what we have," she whispered. "You two mean everything to me."
Ruby grinned. "We'll deal with them together, Pearl. All of us."
"Thank you." Pearl pulled them both into a fierce hug. There was still much to unpack between the three of them. But for now, Ruby's steadfast loyalty and Sapphire's compassion soothed her battered spirit.
Pearl pulled back from the hug, a serene smile on her face. The anxiety that had twisted her insides earlier was gone, replaced by a sense of belonging.
"I'm sorry for how I acted," she said. "My insecurities got the better of me. But I know now that what we have is different from before. This is special."
Ruby pumped her fist. "You got that right! We're an awesome team."
Sapphire adjusted her bangs. "Our love makes us stronger. In any form."
Pearl nodded, determination in her eyes. "Together, we can handle anything the future brings. I won't let my past hold me back anymore."
She turned to look out over the horizon, picturing the challenges yet to come. With Ruby and Sapphire by her side, she no longer feared them.
There was a flash of light as Ruby and Sapphire fused back into Garnet. Pearl gazed up at the taller gem, love and trust shining in her expression. Garnet adjusted her visor and smiled.
"We are the Crystal Gems," she said, placing a hand on Pearl's shoulder. "No matter what form we take, our bond will endure."
Pearl covered Garnet's hand with her own. The gems stood side by side, facing the future with courage. Their relationship ran deeper than fusion or romance. Forged in trust and communication, it was unbreakable. United, they were so much more than the sum of their parts.
