Sifting through some old photos, this gem from my younger DC’s christening party lit my core memory of recreating that above scene from Disney’s Sing-Along-Songs: Beach Party at Walt Disney World!
Of course, I also was called up to dance a separate hula routine to THAT EXACT SAME SONG with some 20 or so other kids when I watched my second dinner show at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort: Mickey’s Tropical Luau.
Photos taken by my DPs in various dates in 1996.
“The beach sure looks a lot like ours, Papa! But there are way more others here.” - “Yes you’re right Cassy. Let’s keep an eye on each other so that you kids don’t get lost, hm?”
Pearly Shells and his ‘kids’ arrived at the beach! Feel free to send asks to Hannah, Cassy or Pearly and the kitten!

Pearly Shells
A poem and a beautiful song Pearly shells, shining in the sun, the melodies of the sea – linger in every one. Footprints in the sand, washed away by the waves, as the sea sparkles, dancing along the shore, waving to the seagulls – as they fly high above. Pearly shells, and the time it may take to find them.
This is a banjolele, I have one just like it that I got from a charity shop cheaply because it didn't have a bridge, now a bridge for one of these costs less than a fiver so I thought I had got a bargain until I took the back off. The reason it had no bridge was that at sometime it has been dropped and the neck broken off and the bridge will have flown across the room and under a counter somewhere. The repair that had been made to re-fix the neck was a large random four inch screw through the body and into the heel of the neck. Seems to have worked, it plays OK .
I also have a £150 mandolin that cost me £50 in a music shop because they said it was damaged and for display only. That plays fine too!
Anyhow to the point, a couple of weeks ago I was watching a re-run of a Hawaii 5-O episode on the TV while eating dinner, (I live on my own so I don't need to observe the niceties such as a dining room table supposing I had a dining room). They were in a night club and the band was playing a ukulele song that I recognised the melody to, so I pick the uke up and I can play the tune then think, "I wonder what it's called?"
Watch the credits at the end, no mention of incidental music, try Google for famous Hawaiian songs, lot of them on YouTube, none of them what I am looking for. So I spend some time everyday for a fortnight looking and eventually find a list of 50 famous Hawaiian songs with links to videos, only had to listen to the first nine and then I found it:-
Pearly Shells is a re-write of a famous tune "Pupu A `O `Ewa" and has been recorded many times most famously by a guy called Don Ho and was performed (as “Pupu a ‘o ‘Ewa”) in Donovan’s Reef (1963). I think that's probably where I heard it, that film made me laugh as a kid and I have seen it many times since.
There is a dance that goes with it which is lovely but I have two left feet and a brain that thinks I have two right ones so I'll stick to playing it.
Merry Christmas all! Or should that be Mele Kalikimaka!
I remembered the shells you gave me. The day you went to the beach. Remember? I couldn’t make it. But we got to meet by the end of the day for dinner. Before having dinner with everyone, you gave me those shells. Maybe earlier I wasn’t as up in my mood and said some weird things. I was sad that I couldn’t make it, but when I thought about how you brought a part of the beach to me that evening, my mood suddenly changed, I was surprised how sweet you are.
Earlier today, I remembered that moment. Then I remembered one song. Pearly shells. The way the lyrics go made me a bit nostalgic. My parents use to play and sing to this song when I was a kid, smiling, happy... When I see them, my heart tells me I love you, more than all the little pearly shells. *🎶*
The love in those moments, I guess, kind of sticks to a special part in your memory.
