I want us all to start celebrating ourselves and the things that are great about us. We're different and that's gorgeous.
The world is trying to make anyone differing from narrow expectations of gender identity/sexual orientation/intelligence/values/size/appearance/career/ability/ethnicity/ etc., feel afraid and get small and I refuse to let that happen.
So let's make this happen instead. I'm gonna hype myself up. We're gonna hype ourselves and other up--totally, unapologetically.
Whenever things feel really dark, I like to imagine that somewhere in the world, someone's corny dad is attempting Take On Me at karaoke. He goes for the high note (yes, that high note). He fails exquisitely and has never been happier or more amused.
Imaginary, dorky karaoke dad gives me hope.
The world's on fire. Do whatever the fuck gives you a smidgen of joy.
Eddie lovers,
I had to show this to you. So I was recently in Sweden visiting an American import shop and they have a SHRINE TO EDDIE MUNSON SURROUNDED BY A VARIETY OF HOT SAUCE. 🔥 I feel like someone who works at or owns the place must secretly be one of us. The humor and the subject matter is so on brand for us. I was so delighted.

Thank you for all the lovely birthday wishes everyone! I'm so blessed to have shared the planet with you for 40 trips around the sun.
I'm so pumped to be in this decade, finally. The fucks are falling away at an incredible pace. I'm embracing the freedom, the cringe, and the appropriate level of fiber intake.
Although I can no longer serve 🍑 without ibuprofen the next day, please be warned that it won't stop me. The nihilistic whimsy, optimistic pessimism, and questionable mental health shall continue. Also, I will continue to talk a, frankly, reckless amount of shit for someone who can't even reach the top shelf.
Much love,

Whenever I make mental health professionals laugh I feel like I deserve a little prize. This is probably why I need mental health professionals.
I saw this little plaque on my walk the other day and I had to make it a meme.
I have a little pill organizer for my meds. I decorated it with Halloween stickers and I think of it as my sanity advent calendar. I even get my vitamin D in gummy form so it feels like I'm getting a little treat with each window I open.
I'm telling you this to be funny, yeah, but I want to make a bigger point. Imagination, whimsy, making and appreciating these little acts of art, plug us into our shared human experience. This is what's going to save us. Art (real art, made by people) can save us. I really believe that. I have to believe that.
I used to (even until recently) think very little of my talents because they mostly veer to the arts and humanities side. From the time I was old enough to know this about myself, I hated it. I would have given anything to be smart in the "right" ways...to have it in me to be an engineer or a doctor...something powerful and influential.
Instead I was just a mentally ill kid who read, and danced, and wrote, and drew, and had an extrodinary vocabulary. I thought I was weak. I thought I must be broken, because all the A+ 's in the world couldn't convince me that I was good enough.
But I think I finally get it, now that I see what the world becomes in the hands of the most powerful and influential people on the planet who never learned to imagine anything or anyone beyond themselves and their greed, who never made anything empathetic and beautiful and gave it to the world, who never sent art into the world like a paper plane to say "yes, I see you. You see me. Let's be human together like our lives depend on it". And they do.
So let's be human together. Let's decorate our pill organizers, let's dance together in the kitchen, let's do our own stupid little stand-up comedy routine for the cat. Let's write stories. Let's make art, because without an imagination, without empathy, we become exactly what we're seeing all over the news and watching with horror.
It's not fluff. It's not bullshit. It's all we have.
