To be fair in Beauty and the Beast they went the opposite way and "kept everything people loved about it" and it turned out being the weakest. The closest the live-action version is to the animated one, the worse it turns out because the more it reminds people of how good the animation is and how much they have failed to replicate that quality. (Then on the other end there's completely missing the point, like making Maleficent "good all along" and spoiling the potential fun because of it)
There was also the Gay Lefou controversy and Emma Watson throwing a fit and ended up wearing a dress that’s way shittier than the original Belle’s verison.
