P fans blindly falling behind the movie Baby Girl just because he recommended it, but fail to see the problematic messages the movie sends. I saw the movie. Not impressed. For a movie written and directed by a woman, I’m surprised at the sex scenes that were so denigrating, demeaning and humiliating to the female lead. Also disappointed to see the message of “no really means yes,” despite the fact that women have been fighting against at that narrative for decades. Lastly, also disappointed that at the message of no matter how hard women work, no matter how successful and powerful they become, they really can’t be happy unless they are being subjugated by a man. A domineering, arrogant and manipulative man at that.
There’s a way to show older women are sexual beings, and that older women/younger man dynamic is ok, but this movie was not it. This was just a rich, bored woman cheating, and cheating and cheating, while allowing herself to be humiliated and giving her power away to a boy.
I read too, that the director said she found it sexy when a man sent her a glass of milk at a bar. If that was me, I’d tell the bartender I was lactose intolerant just to send a message. I’d find it far sexier if a guy just asked me if he could buy me a drink, whatever I prefer. Domineering men aren’t sexy, but dominant men are. There is a big difference.
