I cooked breakfast on the dock this morning with the sight and sound of whale blowholes in the distance. Saturday afternoon we rode out south through the San Juan Channel and spotted a female humpback, slapping its tail repeatedly on the water. They call this a #peduncle throw. She inverted, laid on her back, and slapped the back of her tail on the water, too. It was so loud, I can only imagine how it sounds underwater! I was a sheet or two to the wind, and couldn’t help squealing with joy over it’s majesty, watching from the ship bow with @xoemoon 🌲🐋🌊 I checked the whale reports later and turns out we were looking at #MMX0006 aka “Double Drop”, who they’re able to ID via photo identification catalogue because each fluke is unique. 💜 Saturday morning, I woke up at 3am and couldn’t get back to sleep. I heard everyone else on board restless, too, so I asked Xoē if she would roll us a joint and we went out on the upper deck to smoke. Mark called us over onto the dock, and it started to drizzle. 🌧🌀 Everywhere the rain dropped on the still Salish Sea, bioluminescent green sparked from agitated plankton. The gentle rain sounds and the glitter glow of the water were out of a fairytale. Unforgettable magic.
