31 for the book thing! (hope youre doing well:))

The 31st book I read this year was

Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

Look at that cover. LOOK AT IT. It’s beautiful. 😭 But unfortunately the book was a disappointment. It felt like it was two different stories smashed together and held in place with duct tape. The book starts off super strong with Maia the main character in a deadly game of Project Runway which is so much fun!! The food descriptions are to drool over.

And then the second act starts halfway through (already you see some pacing issues) and Maia is now on a quest to find three magical items. I wanted to shake the book like “Noo! Go back to that other stuff! There’s so much left to do!” I really wish we could have had a trilogy instead and give the second half of this book its own time to breathe because after that it’s just a whirlwind of episodic beats that bring in characters and antagonists way too late and it fizzled out for me in the end.
