This is part five of my 15+ part series on photoshop essentials. This one will deal with the pen tool. It's probably one of the most useful things to know how to do with photoshop, unless you want to risk error with the lasso tool. FINISHED PRODUCT. To see other parts of these tutorials, go here.

We're going to use this picture of Selena Gomez.

As you can tell, it's very light and can be hard to see some parts (like where her leg ends) so I added coloring and a few PSDs

Now go select your pen tool

Trace as closely to her skin and hair as you can. One of the good things about the pen tool is that you can zoom in and you can pick up the mouse. What you do is click where you want to start, and draw a short line to your next point. You're basically connecting the dots.

Once you finish that, go to your paths panel

Look down at the bottom where those circles are. Click the one that looks like a dotted line and it will make a selection path.

Once you're at this point, you can do whatever. If you're putting it into a collage or something, then copy and paste it from here. If you're just playing around like I was, you can select the inverse and delete it.

At this point, you're free to do whatever. You might notice some parts that are jagged, if that happens, zoom in close to them and smooth them over with the lasso tool.

I added a random texture of a field to the background, put a light PSD on top of everything, and did a slight 3D effect on both images.
