@the_cayetano_gallery ・・・ “Hurricane Hattie Belize” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pen Cayetano ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 75 x 104 cm (29.5 x 40.9 in). Oil on Canvas. 1996. We are grateful that a majority of Belize was not destroyed from Hurricane Nana. There is no reported loss of life, due to a government that chose to work together to provide ample warning during a potentially hard hitting natural disaster, and citizens that wisely chose to heed the warnings over politics. As a peaceful nation and example to the world, Belize’s people chose to come together as one, assisting those in need to help prepare for the worst. We continue to take pride as a loving nation to safely assist our neighbors in rebuilding our homes, businesses, and farms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A Historic Hurricane…”Hurricane Hattie” ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1961, Hurricane Hattie tore through Belize (then known as British Honduras) as a Category 4 hurricane! The country sustained the worst damage from the hurricane in all the Caribbean. 75% of Dangriga was evacuated. 10,000 people went homeless from the destruction. Because Belize City was destroyed and flooded, the government changed Belize City as the capital to a safer inland city of Belmopan. Hattie caused about $60 million in losses and 307 deaths. The total destruction and loss of life was so heavy that the name Hattie was retired by the World Meteorological Organization and will never again be used for an Atlantic hurricane. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Cayetano Family Collection ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #HurricaneHattie #PenCayetano #BelizeanArt #GarifunaArt #FineArtPaintings #Belize #CaribbeanArt #AfroCaribbeanDiaspora #OilPainting #BelizeHurricane #HurricaneNana #BelizeWeather ExpressionismPainting (at Belize, Central America) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEvZlogBNij/?igshid=1amhc18vcndv8
