The history of Fire Opal is one long connected to Obsidian and the other Wayward Gems. She was originally a form of company officer in charge of other Gems in battle. To her it was an art form to paint the battlefield with death. The compliments she received were confirmations of her artist’s eye and support for her view of being better than most Gems. There was little beyond her accomplishments…until she met Obsidian.
Obsidian was put under her command but was hard to control. She worked better being given a goal than specific orders. She was willful, strong for her Gem type, and possessed a uniquely painful ability. The artist in Fire Opal found herself drawn to the dark Gem. That pull only increased when she learned just how to control and persuade Obsidian. While the ebon Gem was willful she was still vulnerable. Fire Opal figured out that a mix of compliments, allusion, physical allure and demands could offset her. The look of pain on her face when she first ‘flaked’ under Fire Opal’s command is something that lingers in the Gem’s memory to this day. She enjoyed years of playing with Obsidian and toying with her emotions.
But then came the fateful day Obsidian was removed from her command in order to escort a noble Carnelian. While she could not defy her superiors she made no secret of wanting the Obsidian returned to her authority. For a time, she used her position to arrange coincidental meetings with the two. When Obsidian followed Carnelian in rejecting the Homeworld Fire Opal did not hesitate to leave her now boring position. Games and art were more interesting and she wanted her inspirational plaything near. Using the Rebellion to her advantage, she faked her shattering in order to be unfettered in her enjoyment of Earth, art, and the continuation of her game with Obsidian. Over the millennia Fire Opal has maintained a teasing, toying distance from the monochrome Gem, and one that she never picked up on.
To this day, she still goads Obsidian into leaving with her to enjoy song, dance, art and passion but only in that ways that suit Fire Opal’s desires. She wanted and still wants her delicate plaything to give herself to her entirely but is constantly frustrated by Obsidian’s sense of devotion to Carnelian and Citrine. While she likes Citrine (almost despite herself) she still sees the ultimate goal being finally taming the dark Gem until she is her own personal Pearl: petite, devoted, vulnerable, and beautiful. The fighting is over as far as Fire Opal is concerned so she wishes the spoils. Every time Obsidian looks up at her with those trembling dark eyes and gives in then Fire Opal knows she is closer to what she wants.
Powers:
Limited Light Constructs: Her art isn’t just metaphor, it can see limited reality if she projects her power outward. In battle this serves multiple purposes as she ‘draws’ with her sword. The more time and investment the stronger the construct is, allowing her a form of illusion with substance. However, they are fragile and easily shattered if attacked either directly or finding where she’s painted the illusion.
Frustration Reaction: The more she is denied, the harder the fight, the more power she puts out in response.
Burning Blade: When her blade glows there’s a chance she can slice through the weapons and armor of other Gems.
Heat Restoration: Fire Opal can syphon heat energy from a potent enough source in order to restore herself or redirect it.
Heat Sink: Ripping heat energy from her surroundings, she’s able to sustain a more powerful form.
Branding Iron: By pouring out more energy she can make her construct tougher and stronger.
