PENDULUM MUSIC / STEVE REICH / 1968
Sound Art is a new workface for me, which is elicit as I enjoy trying new things, and the process of screwing things up and having to fix it.
The way the noises come closer together is intriguing, generating tension and excitement. The change in sound from start to finish interests me, as across my video I would like to create a sense of change through tempo, style and rhythm. Also the use of 4 different amplifiers makes the film more pleasing to look at, causing the viewer to understand exactly what is happening, and how simple the noises have been created. The lack of synchronicity in the beginning of the pendulum is also interesting, as the sounds being made have almost occurred in a random pattern. This may be because Reich wants the piece to be different every time it is shown. Also at about 2 minutes through a different, single camera angle is used to depict the sheer size of the space in which the pendulums swing, creating an echo and fantastic acoustics.
