[Story] HOF of March 2017 @eun
This is an artist who PEN.UP has been keeping an eye on for her use of diverse colors and fun characters. In particular, she really expresses “female” characters in a very interesting and unique manner.
It is not only the female characters that are interesting; the pieces of animals are also extraordinary. That is probably why she was designated as the HOF.
Recently, she became more active as she uploaded wallpapers on Samsung themes.
Through careful approach in interview, we want to peek into her art world.
Let us begin the interview with @eun, our HOF for March.
Q1. @PEN.UP : Hello^^ We are PEN.UP team. Congratulations again for your winning HOF of March.
Our first question for the interview is always the same, as it is a must question to ask. Please introduce yourself and tell us your comments about winning the victory. A. @eun : Hello. Thank you for your interest. I haven’t expected this and now I feel very honored.
Q2. @PEN.UP : Let’s get into your world of art. As said previously, you mostly draw “female” characters. Is there any special reason for it? A. @eun : There is no particular reason for my character being a woman. It’s just that because I am a woman myself, making an approach to female characters is a bit easy and natural. Especially, using different length of woman’s hair and vivid color to talk different stories was another merit; so I unintentionally drew a lot of women characters.
Q3. @PEN.UP : Personally, I felt that you may use “PC tablet”.
It was quite surprising to know that you draw with your tablet. I got the feeling that your pieces have details as well as a harmony among colors. Have you ever studied drawing before? A. @eun : At first, of course, it was quite unfamiliar for me to draw in a small screen. So I used computers more than Note (mobile phone). But, as I got accustomed to it, I use Note (mobile phone) most of the time since it has better portability. Before coming to PEN.UP, I used handmade water color illustrations, which have been eventually reflected in my later drawings on PEN.UP.
Q4. @PEN.UP : We keep saying this; but, you have a very strong character. Your style somehow reminds me of @NanNi, who was a HOF last year. But, when we take a closer look, you two have very different styles.
While @NanNi’s drawing has some attraction coming from emptiness, @eun is just the opposite; your full-drawn space comes as an attractive point. Where do you get all these inspirations from? A. @eun : Whenever I have a theme that I want to draw, I go searching for it. But, most of the time, I get the inspiration from magazines. When I see a photograph that I like, I combine the entire look by thinking about some parts that need to be added and parts that need to be removed.
Q5. @PEN.UP : I especially like this drawing of yours. The character in the drawing is sitting down in the train with her shoes off while listening to music. She somehow seems to feel happy but also not happy. Her sort of anticipation or fret on the face comes as a bang. Could you please explain about this? Is this you? A. @eun : No, it’s not me. When I watch a movie or stay in a cozy place, I often sit like that. The weather during that time was similar to these days’ weather, where there is a breeze that makes you want to go on traveling. I couldn’t go on a trip that time; but I imagined a place I want to go for traveling. Then I came across this photograph where it resembled my feelings. So, I somehow ended up with that drawing that reflected my inspirations. Q6. @PEN.UP : We briefly said it before; but expressions are very attractive. There are many drawings where the facial expressions are very unique: lonely, happy and fun. There is some fun to seeing your characters’ expressions. Do you also pay much attention to these expressions of mood?
A. @eun : The facial expression is the very initial feeling of humans, animals and everything. For this reason, they are very simple way of delivering the feeling. So, although I don’t pay much attention, somehow I quite cared about it much. Q7. @PEN.UP : By any means, do you have any drawing tip you may want to share with us? We really thought you drew with your PC! A. @eun : After using sketchbook app, which wasn’t available before, I was able to make compositions similar to the ones drawn with Photoshop on PC. I don’t have particular tips. I believe anyone could draw cool drawings with good leverage of layers and S Pen’s pen pressure. Q8. @PEN.UP : The recent drawings are also uploaded on Themes store. How is the response from the users? Are there many downloads? A. @eun : Grateful enough, many people get many downloads and leave messages. Especially, it’s so good to see how people from the opposite part of the world download the drawings.
Q9. @PEN.UP : We are almost at the finish line. This seems to be our official question. When do you feel the happiest when drawing? A. @eun : Completing the drawing in a way that the whole composition makes me feel satisfied as they turn out to be the one that I wanted to draw when I first came across the element. Also, I feel really happy when I get to interact with the people who enjoy these drawings of mine. Q10. @PEN.UP : Thank you for your time for this interview. Please share with us any comments you have about PEN.UP. Also, say hi to our users. Thank you again for your time. A. @eun : I have long been drawing with a lot of artists in PEN.UP and coming to interaction with them, which is indeed very meaningful and thankful time for me. Let us continue to keep this.
This was our interview with @eun in March, when there is a bit chills left.
The winter is almost gone, and the spring is about to come in this blissful 2017. I believe that many people are starting to become more geared up. (PEN.UP is also one of the many.)
Spring is indeed a season of stretching after saying goodbye to winter to meet summer. For this upcoming spring, why don’t we do some stretching to freshen up?
Don’t forget to leave a congratulatory message to @eun, our HOF of this month.
Thank you.

[HOF] March 2017 @eun
We ‘re already coming up on month number three in 2017. I can smell the spring in the air, which is just around the corner.
Our Hall of Fame (HOF) inductee this month has plenty of artworks that feel like they‘ve captured and condensed the feel of spring.
Using a wide spectrum of colors, our newest HOF boasts striking imagery and the subjects themselves are not just your run-of-the-mill type items.
She continues to draw various pictures with ‘women’ as the main subject for most of her work. And! It seems like she meets women with all sorts of personalities. :)
Among all the wonderful aspects of her work, I think what stands out is her attention to detail. At first, we wondered if these were really drawn using a tablet. That ‘s how detailed and lively they were.
She worked a long time ago, and now she ‘s back! That’s why her work caught our attention. :)
Please congratulate @eun, our HOF inductee for the month of March. Everybody! Send a message to @eun and congratulate her for getting into the HOF. Also, for @eun, we ‘d appreciate it if you could send an e-mail to our PEN.UP team ([email protected]). Congratulations to you once again.

[Story] HOF of January 2017 @greeda
To our PEN.ples, do you like cats? It seems there are a lot of cats on PEN.UP who can talk and do a lot of things with people.
As we mentioned the last time, our latest HOF interview is with @greeda. Personally, We are very curious about @greeda's cat. :)
What stories, apart from her cat, will she share with us? Well then, we'll begin our interview with @greeda.
Q1. @PEN.UP : Hello! You've been inducted into the HOF in January to kick start 2017. Congratulations once again. Can you say hello and introduce yourself to our PEN.Ples? A. @greeda : Hello, I'm @greeda, author of 'The Yellow cat and the Little girl'. First of all, thank you for selecting me as the first person in 2017 inducted into the HOF.
I think it's going to be a good gift for me to start the new year. But the artist label is still a little embarrassing. I'm not a full-time artist at the moment but I am aspiring to become one. Q2. @PEN.UP : There are two words that represent @greeda as an artist. They're 'girl' and 'cat'. Your cute cat, along with the girl, is beloved by many fans. Can you tell us a litt#e26407le bit about the cat as well?
A. @greeda : The cat is the centerpiece of that pops up in my drawings the most. The illustrations above are cats called 'Dreaming cats' and they are cats that can do whatever they want to.
I haven't been able to draw a lot of them since I'm focusing on 'The Yellow cat and the Little girl'. but I want to draw cats doing a variety of different activities and cats in ways that reflect the season.
I've been living with my cat for eight years now and I've gotten so much emotional support from my cat. The Yellow cat is inspired by the cat that lives with me now.
The Yellow cat is a friend for the Little girl who shares a lot of memories with the girl and, at times, comforts the girl as well. Looking at my cat who lives indoors, I wanted to express my hope of sorts to have a lot of different experiences with my cat. Q3. @PEN.UP : Now that we've talked about your cat, I think it will be great to get to know you a little more ^^ While our PEN.UP team was working to induct you into the HOF, we were creating a banner and we got the feeling that 'they really go well together'. It felt as if the illustration was made just for the banner. It seems it wasn't difficult to create the illustration because you have a strong character and concept but can you tell us how your cute Little girl was born?
A. @greeda : I'm glad to know you liked it. ^^ As I mentioned in the previous question, the Little girl represents me.
At times, it could be everyone who loves cats. And personally, I really want to have children when I get married. I drew some of my drawings imagining that it might look like this in the future when my cat lives together with my daughter (or son).
Q4. @PEN.UP : If we look at you’re activity history, you joined in 2014 but didn't post any activities. You became much more active in 2016. Was there a particular reason? A. @greeda : I always dreamed of doing something involved with drawing and I began drawing after I got my hands on a Galaxy Note. I joined PEN.UP in 2014 but my drawings didn't have a clear concept at the time and the artwork that showed up in the 'Popular' page on PEN.UP mostly seemed to be pieces that were more realistic in style. so, I was a little shy about uploading my work. I took some courage in when my Yellow cat and the Little girl was selected for the first time In the Goods Challenge in June 2016.
That's when I think it became clear to me what I wanted to draw. I understood what it meant to draw something I felt happy with rather than following someone else's style.
As I began drawing my stories with my cat that I love I was able to share the warmth that I felt with other PEN.UP users and people identified with me which helped me get to today.
Q5. @PEN.UP : I think you're very active in communicating with others not just on PEN.UP but also SNS platforms and blogs on web portals. Off-line as well. :) Have you gotten any special feelings out of communicating with other people using a variety of outlets? A. @greeda : Since I didn’t major in art and I'm not working in the art business, I use my SNS accounts and my blog to see the works of unique and characterful artists. Although, I think I haven't been able to put in a lot of attention to them lately.
When I get emails or comments on my drawings saying that my work reminds them of memories with cats in their childhood, or when I get feedback saying that people feel happy when the see my drawings, that makes me really happy. Also, I'm thankful for people who saw the Little girl as the main character and for those who assumed she was a young girl. ^^
Q6. @PEN.UP : Our PEN.UP team has been tracking your work for a while. That's why we produced goods and showcased them at the 2016 PEN.UP exhibition, the d’light event etc. Personally, do you have any plans to use your Little girl and Yellow cat characters to produce goods and commercialize them? A. @greeda : Thanks to PEN.UP, who took care of everything so that I didn't have to worry about a thing, I got those goods as a gift and I've kept them as a memento. Unfortunately I haven't received any offers to commercialize them yet.
Does PEN.UP have any plans to jump into the character business? (laughs) As I continue drawing The Yellow cat and Little girl, I've become attached to the characters. Some people around me have piracy concerns, so I'm thinking about registering my characters.
Q7. @PEN.UP : A few months ago, you wrote us a drawing tip. Comparing what you said then and now, we've noticed a few changes.
Have you changed the way you work? Since you use a Galaxy Note 4, I presume you have some tips For PEN.UP users with Galaxy Note 4s and we're also curious about how you normally work on your drawings. A. @greeda : You've noticed. I use a tool called Sketchbook and before, I stuck to coloring in each and every part using primarily pencil no. 2 to make my work seem like they had been colored in with color pencils.
But since Galaxy Note 4 has a smaller screen, my wrist got tired so now, I'm using the 'fill in' tool a lot.
Although my work doesn't involve a lot of detailed depictions, the number of layers are limited in Sketchbook depending on the resolution. So when I work, I work on the background and characters separately, and I import the images into a new sketch, resize them and put them together for the final piece.
Q8. @PEN.UP : Sometimes your work involves charming and humorous poses as well as playful activities. But from time to time, there are pieces with a different feel to them.
Does it depend on you in terms of the source of these different atmospheres? :) A. @greeda : When I create the overall feel for my work, I take hints from my everyday life like most artists.
When I'm enjoying a cup of coffee at a nice café I think of my cat alone at home so I draw a picture of myself having some tea with my cat. It's the same with the one where we're making a wish looking at the super moon.
Although I may be away from my cat, I always think I'm with my cat and reflect that in my work. Also, I don't get complacent and stop imagining things in everyday life. I think those whimsical thoughts relieve stress that comes from life. Q9. @PEN.UP : Your work exudes a fairy-tale like atmosphere as well. Each of your drawings seem to have their own story and I think so many people love your work because you're using familiar characters in the Little girl and Yellow cat. I personally thought it would be great if your work was turned into a fairy-tale. Have you ever thought about fairy-tale books?
A. @greeda : Since I'm not a full-time artist, I don't have any specific plans yet. When I do work on something like that, I want to create stories that help children imagine joyous things. and those that give adults a small patch of comfort.
At the moment, I think hard about one drawing and adding a title… But if I get the opportunity, it might be fun to work so that three to five drawings can come together to create a short story. Q10. @PEN.UP : Well, I'd like to wrap up our interview with a question I've been asking all of our artists selected for the HOF. Our artists have all given us plenty of good answers. :) But don't worry too much! No pressure.
When were you happy and delighted the most while drawing? A. @greeda : I feel like drawing itself heals me and its great fun. It's great that I can share my drawings and communicate with others using PEN.UP as well. Last year, in particular, I had a great opportunity to offer a wallpaper on the Samsung Theme Service and I was able to introduce my work to even more people and that made me really happy.
Q11. @PEN.UP : Thank you so much for answering all of our questions. Please give us a word for our PEN.Ples~ A. @greeda : I'm so happy to say hello to the PEN.PLE family through this interview. I thank you for your love and interest in my work. Although communicating through words has Its limits, so I'll look forward to meeting you with warm and happy drawings in 2017. ^^
This brings our interview with @greeda, the first HOF member for 2017, to an end.
When we welcome in a new year, we set one or two small hopes for the year in our hearts. Unfortunately, so many of us forget about them too soon.
But some of us to make those hopes and dreams come true. It's obvious that hard work is a requisite factor but I think the difference is the desperation some people have for what they want.
In 2017, how about we add that desperation to what we really want? At PEN.UP, we will all sincerely hope that our PEN.Ple achieves everything they set out for in 2017 and keep that bottled up in our hearts. Please send your congratulations to @greeda, our HOF inductee for the month of January 2017! Share your congratulations and take one step closer to each other.
Thank you.

[HOF] December 2016 @TITIART
[HOF] December 2016 @TITIART, Congratulations!
o you like games? Or, do you have any special animation you enjoy to watch? Then, do you have your favorite character?
Depending on your taste and the genre, there will be plenty of favorite characters.
The characters of the artist to be introduced as our HOF in December may seem scary in general, but they also express the manly toughness or pushy and rushing-into appearance.
His work is a little bit dark but it creates an overwhelming atmosphere, and you can see the works of the concept art genre expressed with bold brush strokes. When you look at the backgrounds of the concept art atmosphere, it feels like a new world view with the works that have been uploaded in the meantime.
However, among his works, there are a lot of works which have a different concept from his other works. We will talk about the works through our interview with the artist.
Congratulations! Our HOF in December is the artist @TITIART!
And the artist @TITIART, please send an e-mail for the interview with the Hall of Fame artists ^^ [email protected]
Congratulations again! ^^

[Story] HOF of November 2016 @Nitin.Kurvey
[Interview] HOF of November 2016 @Nitin.Kurvey Hello, We are the PEN.UP team. Today we are going to present to you an interview with @Nitin.Kurvey. He is from India and he is advocating the values of PEN.UP. We mentioned in the previous notice that we had lots of questions for him. How about you, PEN.ple? Do you have something that you want to ask? While continuously presenting his delicate watercolor works, he got lots of 'Hearts' from many people. This is especially valid for his amazing works for the "Let's Draw SCI-FI” challenge. For that challenge the PEN.UP team offered notebooks as gifts to the winners with their own art. Now, let's find out what kind of stories are behind the works the artist creates. November's HOF, @Nitin.Kurvey.
Q1. @PEN.UP : Hi, we are PEN.UP team. Nice to meet you through this interview. Would you say hello to the users who are watching this interview? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : Hello to all the PEN,ple. It’s great to be here and thanks for putting me up in the Hall of Fame. It is an honour to be recognized by peers. Q2. @PEN.UP : Although we have many questions, we are going to start with those which we are most curious about. You upload many works, but artwork with water seems to be predominant. Paper boats floating on water, ponds, reflections of the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal. Is there a particular reason for creating this kind of images?
A. @Nitin.Kurvey : Water as an element has always inspired me to a great extent. The reflections that water shows has myriad variations that keep changing throughout the day and night. Also, we live in an imperfect world. Water and its ripples portray these undulations in the fabric of reality. Q3. @PEN.UP : Some works give a sensation of mystery as well as tranquility. Did those works originate purely from your head? Or do you have references? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : Along with mystery and tranquility some works have also portrayed chaos and disarray. I always aim to portray some kind of emotion through my art. Most of the works are my own thoughts illustrated on different mediums, but there is so much talent all around us that it becomes impossible to not be inspired by other artistes. Each artwork that I view inspires me and gives me a different point of view of the subject.
Q4. @PEN.UP : You gave us an explanation for the works illustrating water, but it seems like you draw in watercolor on canvas as well. From all the works you upload to PEN.UP many are on notebooks. It looks like you like watercolor so much. A. @Nitin.Kurvey : Rightly said. It is my favourite medium to work with. The versatility that one can achieve with watercolours is amazing. I carry my notebook and my kit everywhere because you never know when inspiration will strike. The portability of the notebook is what appeals to me the most. The digital medium, which is easy to carry around, is taking us closer to creating life-like content. I am really excited for this medium.
Q5. @PEN.UP : Those early works were uploaded by using Galaxy Note 2. They were just like sketches, but now you seem to use lots of colors. What made you change your style? And do you still use Note 2? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : I upgraded to Galaxy Note 4 last year. Compared to Note 2 the technological advantages offered by Note 4 are amazing. The possibilities are ever expanding with advancements in the digital realm.
Q6. @PEN.UP : Your Facebook account has many works that are urban sketches. The pictures you took for the works look wonderful. You have a great talent for photography as well. Do you have any other hobbies? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : Our group heads out to various POI’s as we try and capture our city in our artworks, hence the urban touch to some of my work. I am an okay photographer, still trying to achieve something with the lenses. I love to travel as it gives me scope to widen my horizons in all spheres of life including sketching and photography.
Q7. @PEN.UP : The works done on a notebook, did you create them while you were watching the real scenes? Your works give us a feeling that you simply took some watercolor paints and a notebook, and then went outside to draw. When do you usually paint? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : Our group meets up every Sunday morning and we get together for some sketching and photography. The creations done on Sundays are done in real time and on site. I usually work on the weekends, but there is no telling when I will drop everything and set my easel up. Q8. @PEN.UP : Many of your works are vibrant. For example, there is this work with small waves made by a drop, and birds flying away.
Do you have any special tips for creating your distinctive liveliness? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : I do not deviate from the basic conventional techniques used for drawing. The rough work is done with the pencil tool. The change in technique occurs when I infuse colours. To achieve the effect, I use multiple layers with different effects and then overlap them to get the blurred/distorted effect.
Q9. @PEN.UP : This is an interesting question that we also presented to @hosio, who is one of the previous HOF. When you are happiest while you are creating works? A. @Nitin.Kurvey : I go through various stages and emotions while creating my work. During conceptualization, there is a lot of fun and banter going around but I get serious when development stage of my work starts.
Behind every artwork that I post there are numerous ones that are discarded. I believe that true happiness comes from the satisfaction of a well-executed project. I’m happiest when I feel that I have created something worth sharing.
Q10. @PEN.UP : Thanks for your answers. As you are a long-term member, you must have some expectations of PEN.UP. Would you tell us about them? Also, would you give some messages to the users? Thanks for taking time for this interview. A. @Nitin.Kurvey : I would like to congratulate PEN.UP on creating a platform to showcase one’s talent and hope that it grows by leaps and bounds.
A few lines by Robert Frost come to mind when I think about my fellow PEN.ple:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I…. I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost
To all the PEN.ple, go out there and have fun, get inspired and keep inspiring.
This is an interview from India. We are meeting a variety of artists from many counties while selecting for HOF. From Korea, the hosting country of PEN.UP to India, Malaysia, Thai, Russia, Italy, Israel, Belgium, Saudi Arabia. Really diverse, isn't It?
The great distances between these countries can be narrowed by PEN.UP application while communicating with each other through pictures, which makes us really rewarded.
Even for the small remaining time of 2016, and for the coming 2017, we hope you love PEN.UP. And for a moment, if you haven't left a message for @Nitin.Kurvey, just do that now so as to narrow the distance between you and the artist. Thanks.

[HOF] August 2016 @NanNi, Congratulations!
[HOF] August 2016 @NanNi, Congratulations!
While looking at her works, we get absorbed by their strong color renderings. One work presents an enamoring overall color effect, and another work has a different attraction which emphasizes a point rather than the entire. And there is an item which makes those colors more prominent. That is “human figures.” The human figures in the pictures have different facial expressions and gestures in many different interesting poses. It seems that they are actors on stages.
What do you think about the works above? There may be some who think the same as I do. Let’s take a look at other works by the artist. The works with strong colors mentioned above! While a variety of colors from the pastel tone to the vivid tone are used, every one of the colors looks strong.
What kind of meanings do those facial expressions and gestures of her works have? PEN.UP team is trying to be closer to the world of art created by the artist NanNi.
Let’s congratulate her. She is the new member of HOF for August! And artist NanNi, would you send an email for the HOF interview? >> [email protected]
Congratulations again!
