2nd annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Dinner at Penrose Playground

On January 20, Penrose Playground hosted its 2nd annual Martin L. King Recognition Dinner. The event acknowledged the hard work and dedication of six community activists. 

These individuals have worked to bring Martin Luther King's dream to reality. Their volunteer efforts have helped ensure that the Penrose community has access to:

shelter

food

someone to listen

a safe place to grow

Easter Basket bonanza at Penrose Playground

On April 20, 2019, Penrose Playground partnered with several community groups and businesses (see list below) to host the Annual Easter Basket Giveaway.

This event provided neighborhood children with a safe environment where they could play and interact with their peers.

The community enjoyed the dance contests, egg hunt, games, prizes, food, beverages, and, of course, distribution of the baskets. Although the forecast called for rain showers, the sun came out for this fun-filled afternoon.

Creative Kids donates cool costumes

Penrose Playground would like to give a big shout-out to Creative Kids Club for their support of children in North Philly communities. The group provided 100 costumes for the children in Parks & Rec’s District 6. The Penrose After School Program hosted a fun-filled party featuring the costumes, which was the talk of the community.

Mighty voices matter at Penrose Playground

Mighty Writers worked with children from the Penrose Playground After School Program to teach the kids the importance of voting. They discussed voting policies and worked on signs to encourage the community to get out and vote on November 6, 2018. The children learned that their voices matter as they urged their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and cousins to get out and vote.

Penrose Playground Iftar Event

Advisory Council members and staff at Penrose Playground hosted an event to observe Iftar with a group of teenagers in June. 

Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is taken just before Maghrib time, which is around sunset.  

Several of the young teens worked with the recreation leader to organize the event, which was attended by 30+ individuals.
