‘Het Grote Gedoe 2 : Angst en Walging’
Last year, on an evening I had originally intended to make it to bed at a reasonable hour, Faberyayo and Vic Crezée dropped a follow up to their critically acclaimed Het Grote Gedoe mixtape, with Het Grote Geode 2: Angst en Walging (roughy meaning, ‘The Big Fuss: Fear and Loathing’).
Unlike their 2011 collaboration ‘Head Banger Boogie’, which channeled and at times directly sampled and translated old school hiphop favorites from the U.S., this seems to be an actual sequel to the genre bending nature of the first ‘Grote Geode’, a mixtape which seamlessly flowed between hip-hop, EDM, 80’s pop, and spoken word readings.
As the Eurythmics inspired synthesizers begin to thump on the opening track “Nacht” (Eng: Night) one almost expects Ryan Gosling to show up, behind the wheel of a mustang in a scorpion jacket.
When we finally reach track 19th, the finale ‘2 Geile Kloodzaken’ (Eng: 2 Awesome/Salacious Bastards) we’re treated to the sort of epic, old-soul sampling production that Kanye use to use to finish albums before he went all Bound+2 on us and did a Death Grips cover album.
In between these two book ends is a bizarre and often rewarding trip.
In the year following the release of Het Grote Gedoe 2 Faberyayo has continued being prolific in multiples formations. This past spring he released ‘Achtergrondmuziek door Gearriveerden’ (Eng: ‘Background Music for those Who have Arrived’) a yacht rock-hiphop EP with Sef from Flinke Namen; last week with De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, he released a follow up to the wildly successful ‘Jaaaa Natúúúrlijk.’ We felt that as Het Grote Gedoe 2 is a common thread between a lot of work going on in Nederhop right now, it would be worth a closer listen.
