I have always been a huge fan of all types of pizza. Having grown up in the Chicago area, I will always say that Chicago has the best pizza in the US!! Going with that, I have been going to Chicago pizza and oven grinders for more than 40 years and loving their pizza. I have enjoyed all of the classic pizzerias in the area d always end up at CPOG. So when I was meeting up with old friends, they suggested that we go to Chicago pizza and oven grinders. I was happy to oblige. They wanted to go on a sat afternoon and, having tried this before, I warned them we needed to get there when they opened. We checked there website and they listed an 1130am opening time. We planned to meet the next sat at 1130am. When I arrived a bit early, I saw that there were people waiting outside, which made sense. But then I also saw that there were people inside st tables. I went in to speak to someone and discovered that their website was incorrect and that there was already nearly an hour wait!! I was not happy at all so when the others arrived, I filled them in. I didn't have time to wait so we threw around some other ideas for good Chicago pizza. When I mentioned Pequods, the others said that they had wanted to try them out. I had been hearing about them for a few years but never been so I was happy to give them a try as well!! We called and they said we should be able to walk right in. It was a short drive from where we were but we still only waited about 10 minutes to get our table. It was a small, dark place with a friendly, neighborhood vibe. We were all hungry and knew we wanted pizza so we ordered a large sausage pizza, which would take about 30 minutes. We figured we had better get starters as well, so we got a few soups and salads for the table. I had a cream of chicken with dumplings, which was pretty tasty. It could have been hotter, temperature wise, but still good. The pizza arrived a few minutes after we had all finished our starters. It was a pan style pizza with a burnt, carmelized crust that looked amazing!! They served each of us a slice and we went to town. It was very hot so we all had to start slowly. There were large pieces of moderately spicy Italian sausage with plenty of flavorful sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. The crust was thick but lighter than other pan pizzas that I had enjoyed before. And the sauce had great herbed flavors, a very unique taste! But my favorite aspect of this new pizza was the carmelized crust!! Just a hint of a burn on the edge gave it a crispness as well as a other great flavor to add into the mix!! This may be one of my new favorites!! I will absolutely return to Pequods pizza to enjoy their unique Chicago style pizza and would highly recommend it to anyone who is a pizza lover!! Add in the pleasant surroundings and the friendly staff and it's a must stop for pizza when in Chicago!! I will always love Chicago pizza and oven grinders but Pequods has now got a place in my heart as well!! Have a great day!!
