Here's a lil clip from our film! First time I've been editor on a 48 hour film challenge and bloody hell it is NOT for the faint-hearted. Being a director is so much easier. But I'm v proud of this!! Think I've genuinely made something really creepy and 'orrible 😁
tw for medical horror (no blood or gore) and some glitching images
I did all the sound design as well. Soundtracking visuals is a new thing for me but I'm really enjoying it! (And dare I say I'm pretty good at it, too...🎺)
Winners are announced this evening and having seen all the competition I know we aren’t going to win and I’m absolutely fine with that. We definitely looked amateurish next to the other shorts that were screened last night but considering we were zero budget, had one (1) microphone and were using DSLRs I think we held our own!
Had to do a short Q&A after the screening so I hobbled down there with my cane and talked about how our ‘special effects’ were created with lots of edible glitter, and me lying on the floor to stay out of frame while wrapping/unwrapping tendrils of ivy around one of the actors.
And ofc I am always worried about how the audio will sound, and ofc there were loads of moments that made me cringe (but I’m probably the only one who noticed). But again considering we didn’t have a sound op on the shoot, and i had to mix together a separate dialogue track per actor per scene and make it sound coherent, plus it was WINDY AS FUCK when we shot our last external scene… AND it was the FIRST film soundtrack I’ve ever done… yeah again it holds up 😊
Have been feeling really, really fucking low this week BUT here are some good things
A film I worked on is getting screened at the SciFi London film festival tonight
Completed a (one off) paid editing job - and got it in before the deadline
Am collecting the footage tonight for another short film I'm editing
Got the directing gig I interviewed for the other day - which will be the biggest crew I've ever worked with and there's actually a budget for the art department?? We're going to have built sets?? Already had 2 production meetings, casting calls went out today and it's going to be a lot of work and a big learning curve and there are already plans to enter it into film festivals and I'm feeling really hopeful that this could lead to bigger and better things, so... 🤞🤞🤞Good vibes, please!
¡Escandalo! Our horror short got screened at the festival that ran the 48hour challenge… and they disqualified us from the running because they reckon we didn’t use the prop that was in the challenge brief… which is absolutely ridiculous tbh, we definitely did, and it’s their fault for not better communicating the very specific definition they were accepting. (Let’s say for example they said ‘you have to include someone’s nails’ and we put in a shot of a bare foot and they were like ‘no no we said someone’s nails which obviously means fingernails, toe nails don’t count’)
Anyway. We’re submitting it to some other local spooky film festivals who will appreciate us I’m sure 💁🏻♀️
Also, got distracted by Taskmaster but today was a good day because the short film I directed (and edited and sound designed) is finished and submitted! Too tired to gif it but here are some pretty screencaps 🌿✨
One year ago today… My first experience directing a film crew! I was honestly so nervous - working with these people with loads of film set experience and there was me, this interloper who had nae fucking clue how to set up lighting or talk about different types of shots. (Still don’t, really 🤣)
I like being The Person Who Knows Things so it was an uncomfortable position for me to be in. Imposter Syndrome was strong. And then there was a little click in my brain going: There is a room full of men here who are all waiting for YOU to tell them what to do.
