The smell of fresh baked bread and cookies filled the air as Allison stepped into The Mix-Up. She had been craving a fresh brownie all week, one that was still warm, its insides all goeey and chocolatey. It had been haunting her and this was the first time she’d had time to come down and get one. Joining the line, she eyed the case of baked goods hungrily, watching as the brownies began to disappear before her eyes. Apparently she wasn’t the only one who was craving them this week. Just as she was about to reach the front of the line, a haggard looking boy dashed in front of her, his suit buttoned up the wrong way and hair flying around his head. Her impatience growing, she resisted the urge to drum her fingers against her thigh. She just wanted a brownie. And then suddenly there were none and the boy was flying out the door and it was her turn to order and there were no brownies.
Swallowing down the sudden murderous anger that was rising in her chest, she hurried forward, brow deeply furrowed. Checking with the young girl behind the register, Allison confirmed with her that there were more brownies on the way but they would be another twenty minutes at least. This time Allison made sure to prepay, securing her oven fresh brownie. With a grateful smile to the cashier, Allison looked around and only saw one open spot across. “Hey there – would you mind if I just sat here for a couple minutes? I’m just waiting on the next batch of brownies.”
