Perfect plex chant!!!
YEAH HOMETOWN IS AWESOME
Mr. Perfect
I am a perfectionist. That word as it applies to me, however, is not without it’s imperfections.
For creative pursuits, the art of perfection can be a constant measure in patience.
One day the material just isn’t ready. The next day it needs to be refined. A week and a half later it blows entirely. Then—magically—a month later you come to discover there was nothing wrong with the material in the first place. And before you know it, the next day you’re restarting the process all together.
Hooray writing!
As much as I’d like to Ratner* my way through the writing process, I hate turning in half-hearted work.
It’s why some of your mixed CDs get delayed, it’s why this site sometimes get put on the backburner, and, more importantly, why the work itself takes longer to manifest.
I’m the first to own up to a draft being less than stellar, but over the years I’ve come to appreciate the importance of sometimes just making sure the work gets out there: perfect or not.
I suppose this is why I appreciate the art of writing jokes—and, on a larger scale, putting together a monthly Late Night show. There’s a deadline. And the longer you wait in the fast-paced world of the Twitter-verse, the more likely your joke is to get passed over by the masses.
But for a host of other projects, it becomes harder to let the perfection get the best of you.
And yet, ever the optimist, I refuse to believe there aren’t ways to curb this strange mental block. In fact, I have this silly belief that my best work can be done in a way that combines two of my favorite past times: accountability and creative writing.
I know a lot of people wait until the end of the year to set goals, but I have a very strong belief that I can end this year with the strongest material I’ve written all year.
So consider this your challenge, self. With thirty-six days left in the calendar year, why not make a run for it and end the year with a bang.
Challenge accepted, self. Come back tomorrow to find out some of the crazy stuff I’m working on to finish out the year!
*For those wondering, the choice to use the word Ratner as an adjective is in reference to cramming a piece of pop culture bull shit down your throats with little disregard how it may taste or go down. (See X-Men: The Last Stand, Tower Heist, The Family Man, Red Dragon… er, rather, please don’t).
