Performance shares are company shares you earn only if certain performance goals are met over a defined period, typically 3 years. Those goals might be financial, such as revenue or earnings per share, or market-based, such as total shareholder return relative to peers. Here’s how a basic grant might look in a performance share plan: You receive 1,000 performance shares as a target award. The company sets a three-year performance period.
