Ballet Dress worn by Anna Pavolva
Madame Manya (des. Anna Pavlova)
America (New York)
1916
From the Museum of London page for this object:
“Dress worn by Anna Pavlova in Christmas, New York, 1916. This dress of white spotted net with a tiered skirt, festooned with artificial flowers was designed by Pavlova herself for the divertissement Christmas. This divertissement was devised in New York in 1916 and premièred at the annual Christmas Week Bazaar at the Seventy-first Regiment Armory. Christmas was choreographed to the December waltz from Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons. The ballet showed Pavlova arriving at a Christmas party with an escort and then flirting with four men who present her with gifts. The dress would have been worn with a large crinoline underneath, this is not in the museum’s collection. Christmas appears to have remained a popular piece in Pavlova’s repertoire throughout the 1920s.”
