“Silence”

In the remediated text above I have referenced Adelaide based artist, Nasim Nasr. http://www.nasimnasr.com/

 I have written the words of the song, "Sounds of Silence" firstly in shorthand (congruent with the ambiguous words of the song) then erased and rewrote them in long hand.  This song, written in 1964 was the first ever song to talk about contemporary issues, rather than love and romance as previously.

The 60s were a particularly turbulent time in the US with three assassinations, the civil rights movement and demonstrations against the Vietnam war. In this song, Paul Simon talks about the silence of the people who are afraid to speak up against the government.  He talks of the messages written on the walls anonymously so no one is to blame for speaking out.

Paul Simon poetically calls us from our isolation, to awaken to the brokenness of a society silenced by the noisy, self-made “neon gods” of consumerism and materialism.

In this text. I tried to show my own isolation, kept company only by sound, light, word, shadow and thought, the thought of speaking out about social injustice and how to go about it.
