The doe is exhausted. She has spent much of the night making her way through unfamiliar places that are like woods but squashier, and she has been snapped at by enormous toothy things that come out of the water.

She finally stops moving, legs trembling, sides heaving, and abruptly lays down where she is. She's at the edge of a pond that she does not think has any large lizard predator things in it, and this place feels at least safer than anywhere else has felt tonight. She dozes.
