PSA TO MY MENSTRUAL CYCLE HAVERS:

When putting in tampons, insert halfway, then angle up AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Insert the rest of the way. You should be able to stand without feeling it. For heavier cycles where you're not sure if it's gonna hold, add a liner.

PSA to all my menstruating people,

If you have sensitive skin (I'm sensitive to heat or really cold temperatures) please be careful when using the thermacare heat wraps that go on your lower stomach!

The wraps say they can be worn for up to 8 hours, but I can only comfortably wear them for 4 and by then I start getting deep pink marks on my tummy.

So as a added safety measure the students of Marjory Douglas Stoneman (aka the Parkland high school) will now have to use clear book bags. While this makes sense due to the recent events, it presents a challenge for those who have periods (aka menstrual cycles). If you didn’t immediately realize what problem I’m referring to right away, then you most likely don’t have a uterus (or close relationship with people who do).

The problem: How to prevent everyone from knowing you have tampons and/or pads in your backpack.

Solution 1: Pencil case or pencil bag. In my opinion the bag would be the best option because they tend to be a bit bigger. Both cases and bags come in many colors and patterns, so you don’t have to worry about gender. There are some bags that have a mesh window. Don’t get those, because it would defeat the purpose. If you want to further disguise the contents of the bag, then you could in there. Such as travel tissue packs and/or travel size hand sanitizer. If a teacher asks to look inside the bag, then ask them if it’s okay if you show them away from other students or if you can whisper it to them. You and them may get embarrassed, but it’s better just one other person knowing rather than the whole school.

Solution 2: Makeup case. For those who already carry their makeup to school, you can simply add in your pads and/or tampons (if you haven’t already). If your makeup case is full and you don’t have room, then I would suggest solution 1.

Solution 3: Menstrual cup. This option pretty much negates the need for pads, and completely negates the need for tampons. It’s not a recommended option for those who are not comfortable being up close and personal with their own blood. Depending on when you put it in and how heavy your flow, you could wear them all day at school and not have to worry about dumping and rinsing them. If you do decide to get a menstrual cup, then you don’t have to worry about hiding it in your backpack. Why? Because it will be up in your uterus and they’re only meant to be used when bleeding.
