Period. End of Sentence.

I remember when I first got my period. I was sleeping over at a friends house, who happened to be of the opposite sex, and when I went to the bathroom I noticed intense scarlet bleeding through my underwear. I was mortified and shook. It took me quite some time to recover from the internal panicking and ask his mother for help. Her response did not deescalate the situation, rather she panicked more than me and made it a huge statement to his entire family I needed to go home this instant, but never clarified why to my friend, he was dumbfounded, but I read why. Menstruation, not something to write home about, even though it's an intimate manner. I felt dirty, embarrassed and I had a secret from my close friend. My introduction to womanhood was laced with shame.

Throughout middle school, I continued to whisper and hide the word period with other shame-ridden girls, who were also taught that it was too private to share in public spaces (aka to share where men could hear). This shame is completely gone, I have unlearned it, and I have the privilege of knowing many mature and educated men who also have unlearned that this is shameful or dirty and know it is natural.

We were extremely lucky though, as millions of girls with stain from returning to their schools and pursuing education because of the social stigmas and shame around menstruation. The Pad Project is an amazing initiative that is documented on Netflix in “Period. End of Sentence.” The film highlights a sexual revolution occurring in India as women in Hapur learn how to make biodegradable menstruation pads, creating business and profits that secure economic growth for the community and empowering the local women, as they also explore sex and reproductive education and dismantle the stigma around of menstruation. This documentary showcases the importance of dismantling stigma around menstruation and how it actually bars women from education in several countries.
