The End of an Affair
Mr. Blumenthal claims that the physical aspect of his affair with Ms. Rand ended with the publication of Atlas Shrugged in 1957.
This may or may not be true. Mr. Blumenthal and Ms. Rand were still very close, as Mr. Blumenthal remained a member of Ms. Rand's Objectivist inner circle and continued to attend meetings in her apartment until she excommunicated him in 1968.
Ms. Rand, for her part, was often close to him; she had a tendency to rub his inner thigh awkwardly at meetings while Mr. Blumenthal kept his eyes stoically fixed on some spot on the opposite side of the room.
The Importance of Permission Slips
In 1968 Ms. Rand publicly denounced her young paramour, Nathan Blumenthal, when she discovered that he was having an affair with another woman. She was especially pissed upon learning that the other woman was not Mr. Blumenthal's wife.
If only Patricia Scott, the young student of Blumenthal's in question, had asked Ms. Rand to sign a permission slip to allow the affair (as Ms. Rand had politely requested of Mr. Blumenthal's wife ten years earlier) the outcome would likely have been much different. Ms. Rand was a notorious stickler for permission slips.
