Leonin (fl. c. 1163-1190), Perotin (fl. c. 1180-1225):
Sacred Music from Notre Dame Cathedral
Tonus Peregrinus
dir. Antony Pitts
Perotin - Dum sigillum summi patris ·
Anne-Marie Lablaude · Susanne Norin
The history of music in the West is intricately bound to the history and space of Notre Dame. And yet we have no idea what it sounded like, so no idea how to really re-create it.
A beautiful meditation on acoustics, sound, and the history of music at Notre Dame de Paris. And as a friend pointed out, the author does this without making the claim that either the music or the structure is somehow “universal” or some kind of cornerstone of Western civilization; he places those things very squarely in their own particular historical and cultural context.
