Perpetual Present
Marco Cuevas-Hewitt’s solution to the skewed cultural perception of linear time is the notion of the perpetual present, whereby all events co-exist in the present providing a multiplicity of paths and opportunities. He describes the perpetual present as ‘a threshold between that which is ceasing to be and that which is coming into being’ and likens it to the Roman god “Janus”, who has a head with two faces that look simultaneously towards the future and the past, as emblematic of this concept (Cuevas-Hewiit, 2012, 4).
Existing in a permanent state of “now” allows utopia to also co-exist in the “now”, in the perpetual present, instead of being ‘situated in the distant future, completely cut off from the living present’. Events and occurrences have no hierarchy in relation to each other, a problem of linear time. Within the construct of the perpetual present, social problems, which would otherwise be “hidden” in the past or the future, can be resolved or examined in the present.

One of the primary challenges in developing 'Time Revolution' has been explicating the concept of the Perpetual Present in a manner that is understandable, clear and digestible for audiences. My original methods, for describing different ways of perceiving time, originally employed both music (Steve Reich's 'Music for 18 Musicians) and Richard Koch's '80/20 Time Triad' ('The 80/20 Principle, the secret of achieving more with less').
'We do not just exist in the present; we spring from the past and have a treasure trove of past associations; and our future, like our past, is already immanent in the future...Viewed in this way, the future is not a random movie that we are halfway through, aware of (and terrified by) time whizzing past. Rather, the future is a dimension of the present and the past, giving us the opportunity to create something better.' (Koch, 'The 80/20 Principle, the secret of achieving more with less', pp163-164)
I have later gone on to find manifestations of the perpetual present in other things like juggling, seeds, meditation....actuality the perpetual present is a kind of NOW reality...reality is what you make it
I was struggling to understand and explicate what it FEELS like to be perpetually present, until I read this Nobel Lecture; 'In Search of the Present' by Octavio Paz. Paz describes his personal experiences of different time perceptions and, like me and I am sure many others, connects concepts regarding time to the rhythms and cycles of the natural world. He also discusses how the notions of progress inherent in linear time are largely responsible for environmental destruction.
'Reflecting on the now does not imply relinquishing the future or forgetting the past: the present is the meeting place for the three directions of time. Neither can it be confused with facile hedonism. The tree of pleasure does not grow in the past or in the future but at this very moment. Yet death is also a fruit of the present. It cannot be rejected, for it is part of life. Living well implies dying well. We have to learn how to look death in the face. The present is alternatively luminous and sombre, like a sphere that unites the two halves of action and contemplation. Thus, just as we have had philosophies of the past and of the future, of eternity and of the void, tomorrow we shall have a philosophy of the present. The poetic experience could be one of its foundations. What do we know about the present? Nothing or almost nothing. Yet the poets do know one thing: the present is the source of presences.' I will my heart into my fingertips and move them through the soft curling hair on the broad chest rising and falling rising and falling over the heart. My hand moves down the hard belly And I find I cannot remember, in every detail, the line of his face I touched only a moment ago. It has already begun to fade. And I had wanted to hold it forever. He strokes my arm runs his broad fingers down the naked curve of my back over the smoothness of my thigh draped across him. Is he trying to memorize me also? We cannot hang on to this moment Even knowing it is the last moment. Life pulls us like a great tidal wave sweeping us forward dragging us into the perpetual present.
