Perry wasn’t sure what it was, what caused it, but something in that church broke the dam in her mind. She had been locked away in the lab with Hailee’s body, it was all she could see, all she could smell, all she could feel. But the sounds of sobs, and of low whispers and the ruffling of silk dresses caused her to open her eyes to where she was. She wasn’t in the lab anymore, but the truth of what had happened there was like a punch to her frail chest. Her daughter was dead, she was gone. It hadn’t been a terrible nightmare she was unable to wake from, no, it was real, and she was staring that reality right in the face for the first time in nearly two weeks.
“Her face....” Was the only thing Susan could think to say, mostly because she didn’t want to look anywhere else on her co-worker’s body.
“All alien subjects go through an interrogation before gland removal.” Fredic said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“The blood, it’s...”
“The subject has to be living for the gland to be extracted, otherwise it loses it’s cloaking ability. Did they not teach you anything girl?” He asked her, completely ignoring Perry who started to make a terrible sound, much like a wounded animal. The woman slipping out of Susan’s now numb arms, finally hitting the ground.
“She was alive?” Susan couldn’t believe what she was hearing, she also couldn’t believe she was still talking and hadn’t fainted yet.
“She was, she’s not anymore.” Fredic said cooly.
