Perry/Della was my very first ship - even before I knew what that was - and the obsession has reared its head again. I've even been dreaming about them, lol. As someone who also thinks about them a fair bit, I'm curious if you have thoughts about the years they were apart before the tv movies. What happened? Why were they willing to let each other go for so long? It's always tugged at the angst-lover in me, but I've never been able to come up with a satisfying reason.

I'll tell you, I never have either. I just cannot fathom why they would be apart for that long. I think it's out of character for then to separate like that, for them to be apart so long, and frankly, out of character for her not to call him immediately and for him not to drop everything and run to the phone immediately when she did even if he couldn't defend her in his seat.

I can understand why perhaps she was not able to continue as his assistant when he was appointed a judge, though I think there would have been ways for that to have happened, too. On the same hand, being appointed to an appellate seat doesn't happen overnight, so I don't see why this wouldn't have been a part of some long-range plan that included them both. He would run for judge, which would involve a move if successful, so she would take a few months of settling them in and then find local work.

The only thing I could really think of that would be the ultimate angst fest would be that he steps into this seat and she takes the role of proper housewife which drives her bonkers after three months and she has to bail. But that just feels even more inaccurate than what they gave us, both in that she would leave that situation by leaving their relationship, and especially that they would have put her in that situation to begin with believing it could work long term.

None of this makes sense in the way I generally play in this sandbox, in that they are married by the time of or during the first season, and any variance of the storyline that involves them totally separated means, likely, divorce. Which seems completely out of character.

So, in long answer to your question, the way I re-engineer this for fandom sandboxing, is that they are together the entire time, she working for Arthur what's-his-name and he in the judgeship, and much of the movie plays out as we see except that they're married and the interpersonal stuff is even more crunchy because that's his wife dammit.

It All Faded To Black Part 2

Della stared at the doctor in open mouthed shock. Paul looked as though he were about to flatten the man for being so heartless. The next thing Della knew, she was standing in the doorway of Perry's hospital room.

"I'll be out here if you need anything," Paul touched her arm gently.

She nodded, went in, and sat in the chair by Perry's bedside. The great white bandage that was wrapped around his head and covering his dark, wavy hair startled her. His eyes were closed and the color was gone from his face. Except that his chest rose and fell from breathing, he did not even look alive.

"Perry?" Della said softly, but of course there was no answer.

Della sat up as straight as she could in the chair. She was Della Street, after all, and Della Street could calmly get through all kinds of situations - she stopped and her shoulders drooped.

She wasn't Della Street, she was Mrs. Mason and the man lying in the bed was her husband. No tears would fall, and Della almost wished they would.

She slid her hand into his.

"Please be all right, Perry!" she whispered, "Ritchie, Tommy, and I need you!"

Della silently sat there, holding his hand, until the nurse told her it was time for her to leave.

"We'll take good care of him, don't you worry!" the nurse promised.

Della walked to the door and her heart filled with sudden terror. She hadn't prayed about it! She turned and hurried back to Perry's side.

"I said that it was time for you to leave!" the nurse said firmly.

"Dear God in heaven," she prayed earnestly, ignoring the surprised nurse, "I give to You my husband and his injury. You know what's best for him and for us. Tomorrow is his birthday. Please heal him, dear God, and let him come home! You are the God of miracles and I ask that You would give us one" she took a deep, shaky breath, "But not my will, but Yours be done."

She looked down at Perry's face. Nothing had changed. She bent down, kissed his hand, and walked past the nurse who had her hands on her hips. Perry was in God's hands and that was the best place for him to be.

Paul took her arm.

"Do you want me to take you home?" he asked.

"Yes, thank -"

"Mrs. Mason!!" the nurse came running after them, "Your god heard your prayer! As soon as you left the room, he opened his eyes and started talking! He's asking for you now!"

Happy tears sprang up in her eyes and she turned her head to heaven.

"Thank you, dear God!" she cried out.

The doctors were amazed at Perry's recovery. He went home two days later.

Mr. Reed, the nervous man who punched Perry in the face and caused all of the trouble, turned out to be the murderer. He had killed the wrestler because he suspected him of having an affair with Mrs. Reed.

When Perry asked him he had gotten along well with the wrestler, Mr. Reed had hit him.

"Let's just hope it doesn't take another punch in the face to find the killer next time," Perry gingerly touched the bruise on the back of his head.

"What Did You Say?"

Perry rapped his fist on the end table, waiting impatiently for the person on the other end to pick up.

"Hello, Paul?"

"Perry," Paul sighed, "I should have known. Who do I need to look into this time?"

"Nothing like that. Look, it's time-"

"It's time?!?" there was a thump on Paul's end.

"It's time and I am taking Della to the hospital. I can't get a hold of Gertie, and I need you to tell her we won't be in."

"All right. And Perry? Congratulations!"

"Thanks, Paul."

It was six in the evening when they got to the hospital. Della was taken back and Perry was directed to the waiting room. Four other men were there waiting: one was sitting calmly in the corner reading, two others were pacing nervously, and the fourth was biting his finger nails. Perry sat down to wait, watching the others, amused.

Three hours ticked by. The calm man was now the father of a chubby cheeked little boy. He looked at his new son with pride. The two men who were pacing were actually brothers, and both of their wives were there at the some time. They passed out cigars when the nurses brought out their babies.

The last man sat waiting, now busy shredding the cigar he had been given instead of chewing his fingers to the bone.

"First time?" Perry asked.

"No, my third. How about you?"

"My first."

"Really? How do you stay so calm?"

"I'm too busy watching everyone else be nervous to be nervous myself," Perry smiled.

"Mr. Mason?" a nurse walked in to the waiting room.

"Yes?" Perry was on his feet instantly, his heart pounding, "Did she have the baby?"

"Look to the window," the nurse smiled.

Not one, but two nurses stood at the window, each one holding a tiny baby!

"Congratulations, Mr. Mason, you are the father of twins!"

"What did you say?"

"Two fine, healthy boys, sir!"

Perry stood before the hospital window, absolutely speechless. Twins! He never thought that he would be the father of twins! He thought his heart would burst!

Perry was finally taken back to see Della.

"Della?" he called her name softly.

She turned her head to face him. She had the biggest smile on her weary face.He bent down and kissed her. She grabbed hold of his hand and held it tightly.

"Aren't they just perfect, Perry? And two of them! Wasn't that a wonderful surprise?" Della gushed.

Perry nodded and gently brushed some stray curls off of her forehead. Her blinks were very long, her exhaustion evident. She kept talking:

"The youngest one, he's going to be full of mischief. The older one hasn't fussed at all," she stopped for breath and Perry took advantage of this.

"You should rest now."

"But we need to name them!" Della said.

"Tomorrow, Della. You've had a long day."

"Oh, Perry, isn't it all so wonderful?" Della asked.

"Perfect! You must rest now, Angel. Perry loves Della very, very much."

"Della loves Perry very, very much."

And he kissed the new mother.

Chocolates For Della - Chapter 7

Perry took Della to her apartment. After helping her unload, he called Paul Drake.

"Paul? Perry. I have a request to make," Perry quickly told him the full story, particularly the knife in the flower, "I have a job: put a man keeping a watch on Della. I'm trying to talk her into staying home until we find this guy."

"Alright. Are you at her apartment?"

"Yes."

"I'll be right over."

Paul knocked on the door.

"Come on in."

Paul came in and looked over to where Della was resting on the sofa. She smiled at him, but he could see she was worn out.

"Well, Della, someone has been picking on you, I hear," Paul sat on the arm of the sofa.

"I guess so," she sighed.

"You are going to be a good girl and stay home, nice and safe until we find the guy bothering you, aren't you?" he spoke like protective big brother.

"If you and Perry think it's best, I'l do it, even though I don't like it."

"That's our Della!" Paul cheered and Della couldn't help but laugh.

"I have a detective sitting at the end of the hallway. He's going to keep an eye on you, making sure no one is being a bother. If you have to go anywhere, he'll be your escort."

"Alright, thank you!"

Paul and Perry went out into the hallway, getting ready to leave.

"I found out that the flower was left sitting on the front desk. The nurse on duty stepped for a second, then found it sitting there when she returned. A typed note said 'Della Street'. No leads on the typewriter yet," Paul lit a cigaret.

"I'm going down to talk to some of the florists in town and see if I can find anything. You'll let me know if anything comes up?"

"Absolutely."

"Talk to you later," Perry left.

Neither of them realized that a telegram was just arriving for a "Miss Della Street".

Bringing Home The Babies

Perry returned to the hospital the next morning, bringing with him and enormous bouquet of roses. Della was happily talking away with the nurse when he got there.

"Good morning!" she smiled and her smile got bigger when she saw the flowers.

Their discussion quickly got around to the babies and the babies' names.

"What should we name them?" Perry asked.

"What about Richard for the oldest? I've always liked that name. We can call him Ritchie? Richard Perry Mason - after you, of course! Doesn't that sound nice?"

"After me?" Perry was surprised, not expecting her to want to use his name.

"You are his father," Della smiled.

"I like Richard Perry just fine. What about the youngest?"

"You like the name Thomas. We can call him Tommy when he's young, and Tom when he gets older. Thomas Mason sounds good together."

"He needs a middle name. What about Paul? Thomas Paul? After Paul Drake?" Perry suggested.

Della smiled again, "Paul will be thrilled. Are we settled their names?"

"I think so!"

Della's hospital stay seemed to last forever. The day finally came for them to bring Ritchie and Tommy home.

"I suppose we need another crib," Perry scratched his head, realizing for the first time that they needed two of everything.

"Then we'll have to get one," said Della, matter of factly, as she closed her suitcase.

"And that room really is too small for two boys."

"That's true."

"I guess we'll have to buy a house," Perry shrugged as though it were everyday that people bought houses because they had one more baby than they had originally thought.

"We can worry about that later. Right now, let's just go home!"

Perry and Della quickly settled into their roles as parents. Paul had been more than thrilled when he found out that Tommy his name. There was hardly a day that didn't go by without Paul dropping by.

Perry went back to work at the office, but Della stayed at home. Gertie took over for her, temporarily, acting as both the secretary and receptionist. Perry was in his office about a month later when he got a call:

"Yes, Gertie?"

"Someone's here to see you."

"Oh?"

"And they have something for you."

"Send them in!" Perry said.

The door opened and Della poked her head into the room.

"Hello, Perry!" she smiled and brought in babies in their basket (Do you readers remember what they're called? A bassinet?)

"Della! You came to visit!" Perry stood up and gently took the basket and set it on his desk.

"They had a check up. We have two healthy little boys!", Della set down her purse and looked about the office.

Her mouth dropped open and she put her hands on her hips.

"Perry Mason, what happened in here?" she demanded, "This place is a mess!" she picked up several papers off of the desk, "These should have been mailed yesterday!"

"I know. It has been very busy, and Gertie has been doing her best - what are you doing?"

"Looking for an envelope and a stamp," Della answered, "We have to get this place in order!"

The babies slept quietly all afternoon. Della busied herself, getting the office back into shape. Gertie seemed relieved.

"I'm sorry, Della, but I'm not used to be a secretary!" Gertie apologized for the fifth time.

"It's all right! We should have thought this over before the babies got here," Della said, reassuringly.

Perry watched her work for awhile, then called her over.

"Della, we need to talk. Do you want to come back to work?"

Della looked down at Ritchie, whom she was holding, and shook her head.

"I have my hands full. I loved working as a secretary, but now I want to stay home and raise our children. Maybe once they are in school I will consider coming back, but they need me now."

Perry smiled as he watched her hug Ritchie closer.

"I can work here just until you get a new secretary."

"You're going to be hard to replace," Paul said, walking into the office without knocking.

"You're telling me," Perry scowled playfully, "I hate interviewing for secretaries."

"You can have mine," Paul sat on the edge of the desk, "She's too flirty," he grimaced.

"You can dish it out but can't take it," Perry chuckled, "I don't want a flirty secretary."

"I will pick your next secretary," promised Della, getting ready to leave.

"Why?"

"Because the last secretary you picked fell in love with you," Della smiled.

"And we don't want that happening again," Perry shook his head.

"Not at all."

"I still say you are going to be hard to replace. You are the best secretary ever, the best wife known to man, the best mother any two boys could ever ask for, and the prettiest woman in the world!"

Paul smiled, got off of the desk, and left the room.

Case Of The Husband One Step Ahead Part 6

Della sat on the exam table in the hospital room, still a bit woozy from the medication she had been given. Her right arm was all bandaged up.

"Della?!" Perry burst through the hospital doors, starting the nurse on duty.

"Perry!"

"What happened?!?" he demanded, looking horrified at her arm.

"I found a way to catch up with you," Della gave a small smile.

"Your wife saved Yvonne Direz's life," Lt. Tragg, who had been waiting with Della until Perry had gotten there, now stood and spoke, "You should be very proud of her!"

"What happened?" Perry asked, still bewildered.

"Yvonne Direz saw the man who murdered her step father, but she ran away before he could get to her. The man was following her around and finally caught up with her. He tried to kill her, but Della got between them and the knife. The knife went through her arm. She'll most likely be scarred for life," Lt. Tragg explained.

"How did...?"

"I was looking for you and ended up finding out about that there was another guy trying to find her. I found several threatening notes to her, and had to find her before anything happened to her," Della said.

Perry choked and pulled Della into a hug, mindful of her arm.

"We caught the guy who killed Mr. Direz and stabbed Della," Lt. Tragg put on his hat, "I'm going to leave now. Let me know if you need anything. I'm proud of you, Della," he gave Della's good shoulder a squeeze, "Goodnight!"

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Della called after him.

"You could have been killed!" Perry said, everything just now sinking in.

"But I wasn't."

"I went back to the office and Gertie left a note saying that you were looking for me. I couldn't find you anywhere!"

"I followed you around for awhile, then got a lead on Yvonne that I had to check out."

"Why were you looking for me?"

Della leaned closer to Perry and said softly,

"I am going to have a baby."

Perry's jaw dropped and every emotion known to mankind crossed his face all at once.

"Really?!" he laughed.

She nodded.

Perry grabbed her by the waist and spun her around the room. He then kissed her hard. Suddenly, all of the gaiety was gone.

"No more detective work for you. You almost got killed! From now on, you have to take it easy, Mommy!" he said seriously, but his eyes twinkled with joy.

"I am going to be a mother!" Della said, realizing for the first time she would have a new name.

"And the very best you shall be!"
