She asked if I’m in love and there was a pause a breath and a moment of clarity. Yes. I am in love. I laugh and I smile and I can barely contain the fact. She watches me she waits she asks who. I laugh and I smile and I think about the sunrise when the world is painted pink and orange, I think about the ocean and the salt that coats my skin, I think about singing in the car on my way to work and I shake my head. It is not who I am in love with but what, I tell her. I look at her and tell her how once I loved the way she looked in the morning light, and the way she splashed me in the ocean, and how she always belted the songs with me. I tell her that when she stopped loving me, I stopped loving altogether. I tell her that now I know that just because I don’t have her anymore doesn’t mean I can’t love the morning, or the ocean, or my favourite songs. She smiles sadly, she knew that I crashed hard when she left. She came back hoping I’d still be here. I am not still here. And while I love her, I don’t love her. Not the way I love my mornings, or the ocean, or my favourite songs.
