Tha Scribble: 2013 Archive: Ian Egar's "Toys in the Bassment"
Note: Tha Scribble: 2013 Archives is a collection of unpublished music reviews from albums released in 2013.
Title: Toys in the Bassment Artist: Ian Egar Producer(s): Un-credited Label: Uncredited Release: 2013 music site: https://soundcloud.com/egartherapper/sets/toys-in-the-bassment Artist Page: https://www.facebook.com/egartheretard
"Toys in the Bassment" is the solo ep debut of indie Hip-Hop artist Ian Egar (of the Gainesville Hip-Hop duo The Kreux). Egar makes a dramatic shift in gears from his traditional Hip-Hop roots to the accelerated, heart-thumping, white knuckled drag race that is dub step.
Egar shreds through a collage of throbbing bass and electrifying synths with a razor sharp flow and catchy head bopping lyrics. Though the electronic beats could have been more daring and risqué, Egar does a great job of keeping the listener entertained and engaged.
"I Made it," the opening track, stands out as the ep's edgiest track filled with dark and gritty imagery. Egar lays waste to anyone's preconceived notion of this clean cut, all-American rapper with this insightful trap tale.
One of the best kept secrets of 2013, "Toys in the Bassment" is, quite possibly, the first independent EP out of the 352 to fully integrate rap and electronic dance music in one project. Though very short in length (only five tracks equating to about seventeen minutes of music), "Toys in the Bassment" still earns its place as one of the greatest independent 2013 music releases to emerge out of the Gainesville, Fl music scene.

I PROMISE
Last year, I made a promise to myself that I would not let anything stop me from reaching my goals. Check! Last year, I promised a very talented young rapper that his name and music would resonate beyond the streets of his hometown of Gainesville, Fl. Check! Now, I promise all of you that the #ITSJSTDFFRNT MIXTAPE will be the most highly anticipated and monumental independent release to emerge from the Gator Nation in recent memory. The amount of work, collaboration, and determination being poured into pre-production, production, post production, and marketing has not been attempted by a Gainesville Hip-Hop entity ever. This isn't hype; just fact. With collaborative features from artists representing five different major cities; a multi-city mixtape tour along the Eastern Seaboard is inevitable. With a multitude of talented hands behind the project ranging in the dozens; historic success is a certainty. We're not here to "change the game," "start a movement," or "make a movie." We never were. My mission was always way more simpler; Elevate a talented artist by redefining a genre and breaking every rule possible. #ITSJSTDFFRNT.
GAINESVILLE: SUPPORT LOCAL HIP-HOP; BOYCOTT MAGIC 101.3FM
Anyone who is involved with the local Gainesville Hip-Hop/Rap scene has an understanding of how difficult it is to get a spin at Magic 101.3FM; the local hip-hop FM station which broadcasts in Gainesville, Ocala, and Williston. Although the radio station's website offers rules in how to properly submit a song for airplay consideration, the ultimate and final decision is made by current programming director Russel Allen. Although there are countless of local artists whom have submitted their music according to Magic 101.3's guidelines, only a minute handful of songs have received Allen's blessings. A common response for his reason to not play a song has been, simply, "I don't like it." Every single song that is played by the Magic 101.3 disc jockeys has to be first approved by Russ Allen and, according to one source, any deviation from the approved playlist is met with quick reprimand.
This type of totalitarian rule by Allen has brought a divide between our local artists and our only local radio station. It has also diminished the overall programming quality with a severe over saturation of rotation plays. It also hinders the station's djs from fully exercising their creative skills and talents. While this practice and culture may be acceptable in larger urban markets, it should not be tolerated in a community that strongly embraces and promotes local and independent business, art, and culture. Our local hip-hop artists deserve a better and more just opportunity to be heard on our local radio station. I propose a boycott of Magic 101.3 to take place every Sunday from 7PM-9PM in order to motivate Magic to provide a better and more just platform to our local hip-hop artists. Simply switch stations, or turn off the radio, every Sunday between 7PM and 9PM. Also, inform every local business that you patron that you will TUNE OUT MAGIC 101.3 EACH AND EVERY SUNDAY BETWEEN 7PM AND 9PM. Ask them to support our boycott by pulling their advertisement during that time period. It's time that we demonstrate to our local hip-hop radio station what the power of local really feels like!
