Help! I'm Hangry
Since I've started my journey, one question that I get often, "If you don't eat meat... aren't you gonna be hungry?" I know I know.. it's different not eating meat and I get it's also different to have a person in your life that doesn't eat meat. Every time I mention my journey or the fact that I don't eat meat, they all give me this sad face... like I'm starving myself or something. But sometimes I understand what they mean. If I'm not eating meat.. then what am I eating? Since this is the first week and I didn't prepare for it. I can admit that I'm hungry lol. This week so far has been a lot of made up meals from items that I already had in my home. Luckily I had salad and seafood to hold me over until my adventure to the farmers market. I also find myself having to mention that I don't eat meat, ALOT but I rather people know then to offend them if I don't eat their food or want to go out. It also makes it a little different at home. Instead of one meal being prepared, now it's two and sometimes that hard if you don't know what you want to eat. One fear that I had while making this lifestyle change, not having anything to eat. With research and a little imagination, the fear shouldn't last long. Just have to get use to the fact that all the things I use to cook will be revamped. Another fear, gaining weight from eating pasta and bread to keep me full. With exercise, meal planning and healthy snacks options, losing weight should be easy even though it isn't my goal. So yeah, I can admit that this isn't easy and slightly frustrating but it's all worth it. I may be a little hungry today but that won't last long.
My Pescetarian Blues
About seven months ago, I decided to make a lifestyle change. Start with a seven day challenge:
No sweets
no bread/pasta
no soda
drink water
citrus fruit daily
greens daily
no alcohol
only chicken and fish
exercise for 30 minutes
seven days? Of course I can do! After two weeks of doing this tho, It wasn't hard and I kept going. Three months later, and no exercise, not only was I able to lose ten pounds, but I also lost my desire to eat meat. At first I thought it was just me. But every morning for a week I got a bacon and egg sandwich and couldn't finish it. But why not?!? I love bacon and eggs. Until just the smell of these items just didn't sit right with me. So as of June 2016, I gave up pork, beef and eggs. But at least I had my beloved chicken, fish and turkey. Oh but how the tables would soon change me as well.
Not after I gave up beef and pork.. that chicken would soon find its way to the list of foods that my body no longer could tolerate to eat or stand the smell of, turkey following right after, So what is a girl to do? The only thing left on the list of “meat” left to eat is seafood. So here I am a week into my life changing decision trying to figure out how to be a black pescertarian.
See I was a vegetarian once in my life. For about three months when I was 13. And in those three months, I gained so much weight. whew! Not trying to go through that again. Now that I’m much older, i know that being a pescetarian is going to be more than just giving up meat, but how to have a well balanced food plan that will help with my new lifestyle change.
So will y'all join my journey? Here I will talk about my personal journey of trying to find good healthy food to eat. Slight workouts. And the slight fumbles along the way as I relearn what I like to eat. Hope that any of this is helpful and would love interacts, recipes and great alternatives that will help make this lifestyle change easier.
